- Easy Company is in Hagenau in February 1945, where they prepare for a night patrol mission to capture German prisoners. The patrol includes one veteran who is despised for missing Bastogne and a new lieutenant fresh out of West Point.
- It's February 1945 and a depleted Easy Company is now in Haguenau, France, on the Rhine just across from Germany. Pvt. David Webster, who was injured during Operation Market Garden, returns to the Company but finds that his absence from the fighting in Bastogne has alienated the others and he is treated as an outsider. The Company also has a new junior officer, Lt. Henry Jones, a West Point graduate who has yet to get any battlefield experience. The war is clearly coming to an end and the men are starting to think they might just survive. When Colonel Sink orders a raid across the river to take prisoners for interrogation, the men are less than keen to take part but follow orders. No one believes it's worth it when one of the men dies from the wounds he receives. When Colonel Sink orders another raid the next night, Captain Winters has his own unique way of dealing with the situation.—garykmcd
- Feb 9th, 1945. Easy Company was hailed as the heroes of Bastogne, for helping break the back of the enemy resistance. By all accounts, the war is likely to be over soon. The episode opens with Private David Webster (Eion Bailey) returning to Easy in the French town of Hagenau following a lengthy respite after his wounding at the crossroads battle in Belgium. The other members of Easy, having fought in Bastogne and Foy, act coldly toward him, resentful of his non-participation in those two key battles. Their attitudes hint at Web's long stay in the hospital & his making no effort to return quickly & re-join the company. Other members of the platoon had come back for the key battles and even lost their lives. Webster felt that he was starting all over as he had missed Bastogne, even though he had been part of the Company since D-Day.
A patrol is planned for the evening: a platoon will cross a nearby river to capture German soldiers for intelligence retrieval. Joining the company is a young 2nd lieutenant, Jones (Colin Hanks), who is a West Point graduate (who passed out on D-Day from academy); winning acceptance from Easy members is just as hard for the young lieutenant as Webster's attempts to re-join them are. Both are told to join the 2nd platoon.
Webster and Jones report to Malarkey in the 2nd platoon. Jones is the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Platoon. Malarkey tells him that Germans are across the river, holding their position. Nobody wants to move as they have roof over their heads, showers and enough rations after many months. Orders come through that Malarkey will be leading the patrol. Almost everyone from 2nd platoon has been selected for the mission.
Jones begins to show diplomatic skill as he convinces both Captain Winters (Damian Lewis) & Lieutenant Spiers (Matthew Settle) to allow him to join the patrol & the burned-out Sergeant Malarkey (Scott Grimes) to be replaced. Malarkey is on a fast track to Lieutenant. Webster negotiates for Joe Liebgott to remain on the Allied side of the river & provide cover fire. Winters assigns Sergeant Martin to lead the patrol and Jones as an observer.
The patrol crosses the river in inflatable boats; one capsizes. As they approach the building where German soldiers are camped out, a young private, Jackson, rushes into the building too soon after throwing a grenade and is seriously wounded. The rest of the platoon rushes the building & captures three Germans. As they retreat with their prisoners, the remaining German forces open fire. One of the prisoners is hit & is left on the riverbank. Arriving on the opposite side, the platoon takes Jackson & the prisoners to the basement of battalion headquarters. Several of the men, still feeling the adrenaline effects of the mission, are ready to kill the prisoners in retaliation for Jackson, who dies while being treated by Doc Roe (Shane Taylor). Lieutenant Jones restores order in the ranks
The next morning, Winters & Spiers observe the demolition of the building by explosives planted during the patrol. Lieutenant Colonel Sink (Dale Dye) orders that another patrol is scheduled for that night & will involve going deeper into the enemy encampment for more prisoners. By now Winters know that it is not worth losing any more men in a war that is supposed to be almost over. Captain Winters meets with the men later & tells them that they will not go on another patrol, but they will report that they did. The men are relieved & grateful for Webster's actions from the day before and welcome him back into Easy Company as they leave Hagenau. Jones is invited by Nixon and Winters to join them as they deliver the news that Jones has been promoted to First Lieutenant. Easy Company has been through England, France, Holland and Belgium.
