A horror film for horror fans.
CJWar11 March 2023
This isn't a film with wide appeal, but it's worth a watch by those who love the horror genre as a whole. The plot is simplistic, wacky, a bit trashy, often forced, sometimes non-existent but entertaining. It doesn't take itself seriously at all. Even in its darkest moments, it's surreal and nonsensical.

This isn't a film for new horror fans who have come to the genre on the back of social commentary works like Get Out. Nor is it a film for those who prefer the current trend of slow-burn, artistic films like Hereditary and Midsommar.

If you enjoy films like Grabbers and Doghouse, you should be able to appreciate the fast-paced nonsense that is Unwelcome.

Bizarrely watchable.
Sleepin_Dragon18 October 2023
Maya and Jamie face a brutal attack at their home, the couple feel like they've landed on their feet when Jamie's aunt leaves him a house in rural Ireland. The gift comes with a strong condition, the pair have to leave food out for strange creatures.

It's a really bizarre mix of horror and comedy, it really is just plain bizarre, overall it's more good than bad. At times it's pretty messed up, and that opening sequence is really quite horrible.

The goblins look absolutely amazing, and are probably the film's strongest element, don't expect any bad CGI or cheap looking costumes, those guys look pretty cool.

I think it's pretty well made, I liked the visuals, I thought the music was spot on, a mix of eerie and ethereal, all elements made it flow at a good pace.

Snow White meets Hansel and Gretel meets leprechaun.

It's watchable enough.

6/10.

Best dog actor since the artist
Padreviews25 January 2023
Not a bad film , not an amazing film but somewhere in the middle .

Unusual lighting and set , felt like it was filmed on a film set / stage rather than in the beauty of the Emerald Isle apart from a few long shots of the UK registered Fiat 500 and a few port shots.

As a horror there were a few jumps at the end of the film the audience began to laugh but not during it which might mean that any comedy was more accidental rather than incidental although some of it seemed quite farcical but not in a good way it certainly was no Shaun of the dead Zomcom

At times it had a feeling of folk horror like The Wicker Man where strangers are treated as strangers and locals are sinister but where it could have developed that plot it veered off into its own multi genre horror

For horror it missed its prime release date of October and will probably only have a very short run so if you want an average horror with at times some reasonable viewing entertainment pop along

Best actor for me goes to The Dog ! Scariest character played by Jamie Lee O'Donnell and a well done to the live animation & cgi team for the little people

Average

Pad. A 5.5/10.

Not Great
vengeance2028 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, 2023 doesn't seem to be off to a good start with Horrors so far. We're nearly at the end of January & already there's been 2 Horrors now that haven't sufficed.

The film sees a couple who want to start a family, move to rural Ireland after an intrusion they suffered in London. They meet with the locals in Ireland & get themselves a small cottage out in the country. However, there's a dark, yet creepy superstition they get presented with from a local woman involving Leprechauns.

I found the film to be pretty bad to be honest. There's not exactly a plot to speak of never mind a twist. The film seems to get nowhere & has annoying characters. I noticed a lot of the male characters were portrayed as dumb, stupid or evil. The gore was good as with some of the action. But the fantasy & comedy elements ruined it for me & made it difficult to take seriously as a so called "Horror" Film. The pacing is off too with an ok runtime of 1 hour & 38 minutes & with a questionable ending that done nothing whatsoever.

Overall, it's poor & not the greatest start to 2023 in terms of Horrors. The story is little to non existent, the fantasy/comedy elements ruined it, the film is a little long for what it is with a slightly long runtime of 98 minutes & the portrayal of the male characters was bad.

3/10.

Very fun dark fairy tale
sbcxynkt4 March 2023
It's not the straightforward horror I thought it was going to be or the one it started off as. Maybe a lot of other people took issue with that. It quickly becomes a beautiful-looking but slightly creepy fairy tale, before becoming a silly, violent black comedy in the end. I loved it all. It is sort of a dark cottagecore fantasy tale and I know that aesthetic is got right now.

The acting and cinematography are great (especially Hannah John-Kamen, who straight kills it), the special effects not so much. Still a very pleasant surprise. I did not think I would be as throughly entertained as I was.

2/10 ...that was definitely something
nacbxus29 January 2023
Straight off the bat i knew the movie was a let down, from awful acting to adding shock factor simply to try and improve the movie, it was a complete mess! Cool concept, don't get me wrong but it was executed terribly which is a shame as this movie could have been something great. The horror & violence wasn't bad but definitely wasn't the greatest, not to mention the goblins could have been a lot better too. The male lead actor was a real disappointment, i couldn't stand him as he just couldn't act and there was no chemistry between the other actors. The film was a real disappointment and the empty cinema screens reflected that.

I don't get why the score is so low atm 4.9
rafaews4 March 2023
I don't get why the score is so low at the moment (4.9 stars) honestly hahaha, it's a bit different, yes, but I enjoyed a lot!

I even think this movie is cult material for the future.

The whole production was on point. Just a bit slow at times but I really have nothing to complain besides that. Acting, visual and special effects, makeup all on point.

Yes, it's kind of a mix of genres but it's fun, funny and scary. Why can't it be all❔ hahhaa.

I'm done now. You don't need to read anymore because I have nothing else to say. Just meeting the character requirements for the review, really. Bye.

Seriously?
hjennifer-3251430 June 2023
I am rating this movie 4 stars only because I was able to finish it and the acting was good. For the cons- where do I even begin? Others have commented on how weak and useless the husband is. This can't be stressed enough. You ended rooting for something to happen to him.

There was way too much gratuitous violence. The story in a lot of places makes no sense. The decisions made by the main characters- shaking my head. It is completely unrealistic. Probably because it sucked, but, the movie was overly long. This movie wasn't fun or silly- it was just ridiculous. I am so thankful I didn't pay to see this at the theater. My recommendation- hard pass.

An absolute hoot
ethanbresnett24 January 2023
For about half an hour I was very worried that this film was taking itself way too seriously given the premise. The concept is simply too outlandish for that. Thankfully it surrendered to itself, and a slightly cagey first act gives way to a hugely entertaining final hour.

I won't delve too much into the story as I think going in knowing as little as possible will very much elevate the experience. What I will say is that it is a very predictable but very enjoyable story. When they let rip and ramp up the humour and the action it's a blast.

The performances are all pretty solid. Nothing stand out but they work.

In terms of horror, it isn't particularly scary. I do think that there was potential to make this much scarier and give it more impact, so there is definitely a missed opportunity there.

Compared to other folk horror films I've seen lately such as The Feast or The Witch, this one is much more tongue in cheek. It has more of a Barbarian feel to it and is all the better for it. Sure it is a little laboured at times and easily 10 minutes too long, but it is a really fun watch.

Far Darrig et al
twelve-house-books13 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First, let's get the Irish legend stuff out of the way. The idea of making a movie about the Far Darrig or Fir Dearg (Fear Dearg), meaning the Red Men and often conflated with a form of the "little people" who wear red caps--caps dyed in human blood--was a great idea. But that's where everything came to a screeching halt. This movie, if we can even call this travesty that, is one of the worst I have ever seen, and I've seen loads of really bad movies. I'll say it this way: this garbage makes any one of Ed Wood's films a masterpiece, including 'Plan 9 From Outer Space.' And I have a question: Did Colm Meany just need the money? This ridiculous attempt at telling a story is wrong on so many levels that I really don't know where to begin, so I'll just randomly jump in and warn you against the spineless husband who picks a fight with three London toughs and then can't defend his wife from them as they break-and-enter and then repeatedly kick her and her unborn baby while beating him nearly senseless. So they pick up and move to the Irish countryside where the Meany character and his three grown children bully them as bad or worse than the Chavs from the Big Smoke. The movie just gets worse from there. Don't bother.

Brilliant

Unwelcome is a gem of a movie it is an underrated gem. I have no expectations while watching this movie due to low ratings and mediocre reviews but when I started this movie it just kept my interest till the end. The suspense is absolutely amazing and with the best atmosphere the horror movie can get. It is distributed by warner bros company so I have the feeling that it may be good but what a gem of horror movie it was. Acting was also superb especially from the lead characters and the creatures are also done very well. I have to write a review for this movie just so that its ratings get higher. Highly recommend for horror movie lovers.

Strange film
apcyberax-1803727 January 2023
This one is a Strange film. The start of the movie sets the story well and seems pretty normal but it doesn't stay normal. The longer you watch the more you wonder if you have switch to another movie mid way and then you get pulled back in. You love the characters and then hate them and them become unsure. Who is the bad people and who is the good people.

I was unsure about this movie but i came away confused. I am still not sure what i watched. It seemed to have 3 endings but then kept going. What can i say..... I really don't know that to say.

Watch and and see for yourself. I really can't recommend you to watch or miss this. I'm unsure myself.

This review will confuse you as much as this movie. My head hurts!

Not bad at all
smoke07 March 2023
I gave Unwelcome a higher rating than it deserves, just to try and balance the score, because the movie really is worth at least one viewing.

The biggest issue I had with the film was towards the end, when the inevitable redcap payment is demanded; those scenes severely lacked logic and coherence, much less resolution. Some of the horror scenes are very timid, while others are outright silly with gross-out gore, again. With no logical reasons why.

Aside from those ultimately minor problems, this is still an overall decent enough horror movie to watch at least once, even if you're looking at your phone for most of it.

ripe for riffing
markwhelan-590013 March 2023
Well I just HAD to watch it,being Irish and a horror movie fan. I watched it with my 13 year old daughter who doesn't know any better and we did have a fun watch riffing along with the truly awful stereotypical characters and the fact that Colm Meanys' character insists on being called 'Daddy Whelan' means I now have a new catchphrase.

The creature effects were reasonable, picture the little guy terrorising Drew Barrymore in 'Cats eyes' blown up to kid size.

It's a silly B-movie and there's nothing wrong with being that.

The male lead was seriously annoying and I wished bad things for him,but that's just me:)

Are you serious?
astoner-4345425 December 2023
Never, ever, will I understand why some people rate the way they do. I just also watched What Josiah Saw, which was AMAZING and this is rated almost up there with that?! 2 points lower than Hereditary?! Are you serious? The comedy? Doesn't work at all. No horror. Nothing happens for over an hour. You can tell the entire movie is a set piece. I understand this shouldn't be a film you take seriously but it's not even entertaining. Every character is annoying. The movie is annoying. I wanted to shut it off but hoped it would redeem itself. It never did. I'd give it a half a star if I could. If this is what you want in your films I can't help you. Run far away from this film. I will never trust reviews ever again. Unbelievable!

It's a game of 2 halves
gazmar6224 January 2023
Strange film, it can't quite make up its mind if it is a home invasion movie or a horror movie or a fantasy creature feature comedy.

When it is horror it is quite good in a gruesome kind of way, when it is a home invasion it is either brutally violent of weirdly bloody funny.

Ridiculous characters, and awfully played? But I guess that was also supposed to be a funny element.

I didn't know what it was beforehand and actually forgot the title, I put Unwanted as the title in my calendar, a Freudian slip maybe?.

It passed the 6 laugh rule to qualify as a comedy at least, even though that was all in the second half.

Don't go and watch
rusticginger24 January 2023
It's hailed as the new genre of horror movie but sadly this did not hit the spot. Even old style b rated 80's horror is better than what I watched tonight.

Think baby toda gone mad with average acting and a terrible plot. Luckily we saw it for free but it was still a waste of an hr and a half. Don't waste a penny on it- wait til it comes out on Netflix or something else.

The ending was weird and didn't tell you anything, and I spent a lot of time laughing but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the point- although fair play to the drunk guy at the begging- he was actually funny.

Not sure what I watched but if this is the new style- I say bring back what we all know and love, as the old saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

Not sure why it scored so low, it was pretty good
second-exodous5 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have it a 7 because I enjoyed it. I wasn't going in expecting much at all and ended up enjoying it. The 'Red Caps' looked very 80's, that part had a 80's feel.

The only real downfall is I wanted the husband to lean to be a man and actually win a fight but he never does, I guess it is modern day, men have to be weak. Had the husband stood up once I would have given it a lot higher score.

The acting was alright, nothing stands out in this as horrible. I guess it wasn't scary, the scary part is at the first when the home fries broke into the house and attached the couple, I think this might be why people rated it so low, the harsh part was at the first and then it got silly from there. Silly isn't bad though, I would have left a card with the liver inviting them to a party or something, introduced them to Coke and Pepsi products and watched Shrek with them. I don't know, I thought they were adorable. The best part is how they messed up that family at the end. I still have no idea what the heck happened at the end, she became their queen? I thought maybe they were humans turned into goblins because the one that 'Dad' crushed the skull in called him Dad but it never really mentions it again plus the kid that was sold to them before the movie wasn't turned into a goblin so I don't think that was a thing.

This isn't art but it is a lot better than other horror themed movies rated this low, I think it deserves more than a 5, what the rating is at at the time I write this. 5 seems really low, the acting and the goblin characters should have put it higher alone.

Good idea which could have been better
alex-oceallaigh31 January 2023
Feel like this had the potential to be a much better film. There are some good moments and good performances from the likes of Colm Meaney. Overall though it isn't able to pull off the real dramatic moments and think it should have stuck with going all out with the mad, great-looking redcaps.

Side note: Fear Dearg translates to the singular "Red man" but we were definitely dealing with more than one redcap so it should have been Fir dhearga. Guess it's not too important but couldn't stop thinking about it everytime it was mentioned.

Definitely interested in checking out Grabbers now though and will check future Wright films out.

Weird, Quirky, Bizarre But Good Fun For Horror Buffs
martimusross25 January 2023
Unwelcome

Well this was a strange one, I can't say much otherwise I will let the cat out of the bag, but basically a pregnant couple inherit a house in Ireland only to discover their aunt had an unusual past.

It was a great Irish yarn built upon very little, it was very weird, very quirky, extremely contrived and I am sure I laughed in all the wrong places.

However, even with its incredible script and at times hammy acting it was a very entertaining movies. You know, it was so bad, it was good! With that said much was tongue in cheek anyway.

It's not for everyone, but horror buffs will enjoy this, as did I! I'm giving this a firm 6 outta 10, (Gremlins, Dobby or Star Wars, who knows!)

As a horror it's a 1, as a comedy 11?
chris_rowe-881-16882024 January 2023
This film is a genuine embarrassment to the writers, directors, actors and anyone who played apart in this film! It's so bad as a horror, it starts off semi promising but gets bad and quickly.

The girl was a decent actor but as time passed she kept making nonsensical choices that her character wouldn't have made, her complete arc and ending were genuinely ridiculous, I mean I'd say the 70% of the audience who'd not left were all laughing by the end.

It wasn't remotely scary for anyone older than maybe 10? The strange little gremlins were awful, I mean films 30 years older did it better so it's inexcusable that this got put out, especially when it's been pushed back 2/3 times, then this is what you release?

The husband has no future in acting, Poundland Jack Whitehall.

There were some well known people on here who I can't understand why they'd do it? Two especially came from pretty successful comedy shows,.

It doesn't show half the action, then Towards the end you see more and it's laughable, it's so poor quality.

It's 1/10 as a horror, as a comedy and something ti chat about like that weird film men from last year it's 11/10

Hang your heads for ripping people off, that should be automatic refund! £15 to watch that!! It's not even £3 dvd good.

Like a Grimm Fairytale
njfyfbg18 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so much fun! I feel like this is a dark fairy made for horror fans. A seriously unlucky couple moves to the country for peace and they get nothing but problems. It is a wonderful comeuppance story. The little people are amazing and reminds me of a Grimm Fairy Tale.

One of the better horror movies I have seen this year. My favorite genre is the Horror Comedy. This one definitely into that category but not directly in the middle. No animals die which is refreshing as many of the horror movies of late kills the dog. Horror movies do not need to kills animals as it is always about the body count. Most of the kills are on screen which is great as well. I do not understand why this movie has such a low rating other than non horror fans writing reviews.

It's an entertaining watch and worth watching a second time. So my husband and I will own it at some point.

Quite endearing, and way out there
sjo-151 February 2023
Theres something endearing about this odd film.

Initially the outdoors shots look eerie and as if they are filmed in a studio.

The central couple are not entirely convincing. Its not clear why she would be with such a socially inept and irritating loser. And he is really irritating.

The Irish stereotypes come thick and fast as we are introduced to a strange combination of characters.

Always nice to see Niamh Cusack.

The builder family are just too weird-but-played-straight to take seriously. Theres just no way you would have them in your house, having met them.

There are various other totally unbelievable plot points .

The first time I saw the red caps I laughed out loud. Noone else did (though there were only 4 people in the cinema). I laughed at various other points as it all became more unbelievable.

The red caps are actually quite likeable little chaps that seem to have a sense of humour as they kill or are killed.

The whole thing feels a little 80's straight to video, but thats not a totally bad thing. Its got a quirky likeable quality.

It goes off the rails in the last 20 minutes, leaving one to question what they have just watched at the end.

This felt like a rough pre-release copy/draft
degrees-333652 March 2023
What the heck....this was truly dreadful as far as scenery and sound goes. The vast majority of the shots around the property felt, looked and sounded like a set-design and/or green screen use.

Their voices sounded studio recorded and the grass/outdoor looked absolutely terrible and fake.

Who ever was in charge of the sets and sound recording should be fired.

Give this HORRIBLE production a miss.

How to Ruin a Solid Premise Through Abject Stupidity 101.
fedor88 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"We got great scenery, nice photography, actual colors (which is very rare these days in horror films), an interesting premise with a city couple dealing with forest gremlins... But let's ruin all of that by turning this into just another braindead home invasion psycho-family thriller. Let's pander to the most idiotic demographic of horror fans."

Instead of placing focus on the goblins, the director chose to politicize this idiotic story with completely unnecessary and very tiresome English-Irish relations "social commentary", as if a silly monster flick needs that kind of rubbish. But every jerk these days shoves politics into his material, whether it be stand-up comedy, comic-books, music movies or novels: everyone is damn "concerned" about the planet, about issues, and they want you to know about it... Goblins should have been the stars of this here wee show, but instead the putz turned this into a psycho-family home-invasion thriller, with goblins only playing a supporting role. They are essentially just a shadow in the first half, making their grand entrance far too late, and in predictable fashion.

OK, this writer-director isn't too bright, I get it. He couldn't devise a smarter, more original story that involved only goblins so he resorted to ripping off various dumb cliches that ruined 100s of very bad movies. I get it, he used the Meaney clan as a plot-device, their entire purpose being to get slaughtered by the creatures. My question though: why exaggerate so much? Why all the idiotic overkill? Are you THAT insecure about yourself and your movie?

This was never a comedy. It didn't start as a comedy, it didn't continue as a comedy, so WHY did the Meaney clan suddenly start doing banter in the 2nd half of the movie as if they were in a comedy? This movie's characterization problem is of epic proportions: the movie is a horror drama, yet the Meaney clan behaves like they escaped from a lunatic asylum situated in a black comedy, hence invaded this movie. Their behaviour is so over-the-top unrealistic, stupid and exaggerated that it completely killed the movie, way before they even started their stupid battle with the goblins.

Plenty of other bad logic too:

1. Hubby actually has the balls to insult the trio gang (the ones who assaulted him and his wife), which predictably leads to the attack. This is stupid, because he later proves to be a total and utter wimp, a mega-coward of the worst sort. This contradiction is staggering, and is another example of oafish characterization.

If anything, having gone through a home invasion ordeal already, AND having done some boxing exercises, should have made Hubby mentally more prepared for the 2nd round of home invasion, not LESS prepared.

2. Wifey says "I'm due any day now", yet despite her pregnancy (which could literally end at any HOUR) she enters the forest - alone - for the first time - and while there is an unruly clan of hillbilly misfits working in and around her house. She goes deep into the forest, just so she can follow around the dog. It doesn't even occur to her to "maybe better call the police because the dog's owner has been missing".

3. Despite finding out that Fatso Hillbilly is really missing, as Wifey had told him (which he didn't initially believe), he leaves the pub WHISTLING, happy. This makes zero sense. He should be stressed out and in panic mode.

4. Colm Meaney sets the house on fire - yet the fire miraculously disappears a little later! No explanation whatsoever what happened to all those flames. Not to mention how DUMB it was that Colm would attempt to burn it BEFORE finding out where the couple is and before locating his son's corpse. Isn't that why he came there in the first place?

5. Who in their right mind wouldn't have fired the Meaney clan already on the very first day? They behave like hooligans, they are beyond rude, act as if the house is theirs, even brazenly claim that the house is theirs at one point (!), break windows by mistake, show great ineptitude, steal food from the kitchen - and yet ALL of this is tolerated by the London couple. Utter hogwash. There is no young couple on this entire planet that would have tolerated these psychos for longer than three hours.

6. Colm's other son escapes the house, despite having been attacked by several goblins earlier. How did he free himself? No explanation. Considering that he had several deep knife wounds already, and that the goblins outnumbered him, I really don't understand how he managed to escape them.

7. The fact that this Irish village has a nefarious clan that's pretty much on par with the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" family, yet they'd never been arrested for murder, aggravated assault or rape - is a total joke. This isn't 12th century Africa. The cliche of the Irish living like lawless barbarians even now, in the 21st century, is milked here for all its worth, which is unfortunate, not because it might offend the Irish but because it insults our intelligence. If you wanna convince me that the idyllic Irish countryside is populated by savage, uncivilized morons - then you're a moron.

8. Colm's speech to his dying son about being "proud" of him is utterly daft, doesn't suit this film or these characters in the slightest. It's so random. As if a moron copy-pasted a line from a sci-fi film then applied it to a costume drama, or something like that. Nonsensical, amateur writing.

9. Minutes after sobbing over his slaughtered children, Colm suddenly jokes around about the little people. So is this a movie that wants to be a comedy but for some reason can't, so it resorts to thriller mode whenever it isn't trying to be funny? Or the opposite: a comedy that wants to be taken seriously as a thriller, but can't, because the different schizo voices in the script are giving it opposing instructions? Just guessing, trying to understand the schizophrenic nature of this trashy, absurd script.

The "plot-twists" after the home invasion rubbish were so predictable, I don't even know why the director bothered with them. We knew the baby wasn't safe from the goblins. We knew that the abducted baby from 40 years earlier was still alive. And we already knew from way earlier that Wifey was gearing to become new "queen" of the forest trolls. All of this is generic rubbish, yet it's presented as something exceptional and original.

It's more than obvious that whatshisname didn't know what he was doing. This director had evidently seriously devolved since "Grabbers" (which was a decent film). But this is a very typical thing with his generation: whoever does a halfway decent film just goes downhill right after... The worst film-making generation since... ever. Unable to learn and unwilling to develop. Too many millennial writers deciding to direct, and the opposite: they overestimate themselves greatly, narcissistic and deluded as they are.

Besides, why would anyone give a toss about what happened to a character as pathetic as Hubby, who sobbed like a little baby when faced with the "threat" of one dumb hillbilly who wasn't even properly armed. This movie should have had an abortion, just like Wifey did with her first pregnancy. "That relationship would have never worked, it would have been ugly," she says. She may as well have been talking about the need to abort this movie during its 1st trimester, while it was in the pre-production stage, to save the world yet another crap horror film. We kind of have more than enough of those already...

Nice scenery. That's pretty much the only positive. The rest is mostly garbage.
