Economists around the world infer that the presence of a ‘benevolent patriarch’ in a household provides for harmony and peace in a family. It surely is male-dominated frivolous thinking, but this insane precedent of women being unnoticed, unheard, unseen, and underrepresented leaves us alarmed and concerned. Millions of women go missing, and the biased economy, the social system and the government abandon them to be victims of socio-economic deprivation. In “Unseen,” when Maxwell Mwale is imprisoned and accused of the murder of Yazid Noordien, and later when he is released from jail but doesn’t return home, it unsettles his wife, Zenzile Mwale, making her vulnerable to bias, abuse, sexism, having her dignity violated, and the trauma of losing her beloved husband and Esulu, her son. She is a cleaner, and therefore, no one cares whether she exists or not. Her actions, though invisible, give her an upper hand, allowing...

When Bhavnani first wrote a horror story ‘Bearlike Man’ that was selected at Bifan (Korea), the largest genre festival in Asia, she found herself to be the first Indian woman director to be on the platform ever.
"We were practically non-existent in that space. Over the three decades I looked at, 9.9 per cent of directors were women. Horror comes with just 5.9 per cent of directors being women and Sci-fi – 2.8 per cent. I find this statistic offensive. Wench 2022 showcased 47 horror /sci-fi/fantasy films — 43 of them directed by women," she tells Ians.
Believing that India has not really explored horror in its truest potential or form, the filmmaker feels there is no better medium to highlight social change than this genre.
"And there are so many different ways to make them instead of the cliche knee-jerk horror that we all know of," she asserts.

Both a melancholic social tragedy, while “Bulbbul” explores the themes of the sexual violence that wreaks horror in the lives of women, “Qala” sheds light on the plight of women in the Hindi music industry- predominantly a man’s world. But there is more to this movie than what meets the eye. A visually striking film with moths, metaphors and music encapsulates the plummeting mental health of the titular woman

Mumbai, Feb 22 (Ians) Actress Triptii Dimri recalls how one of the best advices she has received in her career so far came from filmmaker Karan Johar.
"On my first meeting with K.Jo he said to me, 'don't ever restrict yourself, try picking different genres and different roles, so that you keep growing as an actor'. It was a beautiful piece of advice. I think it i best if we as actors keep challenging ourselves," Triptii said.
After a small role in the film Poster Boy in 2017, she gained visibility with her role in the romantic tragedy Laila Majnu the next year. However, it was her role in the Ott-released horror thriller Bulbbul last year that won her critical appreciation too, along with popularity.

Anushka Sharma, in all probability, would have given birth to her firstborn with husband Virat Kohli, the captain of the Indian cricket team. When our conversation takes place, she’s in the last stretch of pregnancy, but by no means has that slowed her down.
In her first trimester, she was promoting her two production ventures—2020’s critically-acclaimed series Pataal Lok and the feminist supernatural film Bulbbul. These days, Sharma confesses she’s directing a lot of her energy in preparing the nursery and setting up the home for the baby. “I’m in forced nesting mode,” she laughs. “Whether you are pregnant or not, I think everyone has been forced into it this year,” she says.
As we speak, several weeks ahead of her due date, the animal-themed nursery is complete. “I just want to be prepared. Everything is slower because of the times we are living in and...

There’s a degree of irony in the fact that Netflix unscripted dating show “Indian Matchmaking,” the most distinctly Indian content to originate from a platform aggressively expanding operations in India, was commissioned out of Los Angeles, rather than Mumbai.
Netflix launched in India in 2016, but it took a while to warm up to homegrown commissions in a market that thrives on local fare. It didn’t help optics that content execs Swati Shetty and Simran Sethi opted to resign rather than be based in Mumbai. They were replaced eventually by Monica Shergill in 2019, who joined existing director of originals Srishti Behl Arya. Amid all the restructuring, the streamer’s first Indian commission, 2018’s “Sacred Games,” a hit for the service, was commissioned by Erik Barmack out of the U.S.

Jayasurya started out as a mimicry artist, hosted TV shows like Jagathy Vs Jagathy, Fun-Day Jokepot and did nameless cameos in several films between 1995 and 2001. His career took a turn with his big-screen debut as a leading actor with the 2002 romantic-drama Oomappenninu Uriyadappayyan. "I was a mimicry artiste and a dubbing artiste but since then the only thing that kept running in my mind was cinema. Doing cinema was my only intention and because of that honesty and pure intention, I think I have managed to reach here," Jayasurya told Pti in an interview.

MollywoodSeveral rape-revenge dramas have come out, but these three recent films go beyond the usual narratives. Sowmya RajendranWomen who commit a sexual transgression on screen have usually been punished. They might be raped, killed or at the very least shamed and reformed — and the character would be considered to have “asked for it”. In the last decade, however, particularly after the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, the depiction of sexual violence on screen has undergone a vast change. A woman’s transgression is no longer considered a justification for sexual violence. From rape being used as a plot point for the hero to outrage about and the rape victim taking her own life unable to live with the “shame”, narratives now are placing women at the centre and reimagining victims as survivors. This has led to several rape-revenge dramas, including the latest Netflix film Bulbbul, produced by Anushka Sharma. These...

OTTDespite its problems, 'Bubbul' achieves what it sets out to do - it is a fairy tale like no other. Geetika MantriThe witch, the dayan, the chudail… these were common characters in the ghost stories that many of us listened to when growing up. The trope was similar – an ugly, supernatural woman who was evil, sadistic and would inflict harm. Today, these words are used as derogatory terms to describe women who are different from the ‘ideal’, such as if they speak too loudly, don’t smile enough, don’t fit unrealistic beauty standards, work in their self-interest and so on. The trajectory has been similar elsewhere too – women who were targeted in the Salem witch trials in the Us in the 17th century were arguably those who did not conform to gendered social expectations at the time. In this context, Bulbbul offers a refreshing take on these sexist characterisations...

With temperatures on the rise and no end of summer in sight, we become increasingly thankful for the time we spend inside our air-conditioned homes, comforted by the silence which we have grown used to during quarantine, and entertained by our one and only true friend: Netflix. And so, on that note, here’s what’s new on the platform today, June 24th.
First off we have a documentary called Lenox Hill. Developed by Ruthie Shatz and Adi Barash, and starring John Boockvar, David Langer and Mirtha Macri among others, it follows the lives of doctors and nurses working at the Lenox Hill Hospital in upper Manhattan. Christened as one of the most poignant docuseries of the year, its latest episode is centered around, you guessed it, Covid-19. Specifically, it will explore how the employees of this hard-hit hospital dealt with the pandemic.
Up next we have another documentary, this one called Athlete A.

With only a few days left to go in June, the flow of new content on Netflix has really begun to slow down. Which is perfectly understandable as the streaming giant just announced their July line-up and it looks to be an absolute doozy. Indeed, from highly-anticipated new original series to tons of great licensed films, it’s going to be a pretty exciting couple of weeks for subscribers.
But first, we need to get through the last few days of June and today brings with it 3 new movies and 2 new TV shows. Admittedly, there’s nothing terribly notable here and you may struggle to find something that piques your interest, but nevertheless, Netflix still has some fresh material for us to dive into and below you’ll find the full list.

EntertainmentAnushka's film 'Bulbbul', a supernatural thriller, released on Netflix on Wednesday.IANSFile photoActor-producer Anushka Sharma feels nothing can substitute the experience of watching a film on the big screen, and thinks that the post-covid era will usher in a new wave where Ott platforms will "parallely exist" with theatres. "Let's be very honest, these are extraordinary circumstances that we are all experiencing. I think, to judge anything on the basis of this time would probably not be valid," Anushka told Ians, when asked if the digital medium was filling a void of content due to the shutdown of the film industry amid the pandemic. The actress was speaking to the media even as she released her production venture Bulbbul, a supernatural thriller, on Netflix. Directed by long-time lyricist and dialogue writer Anvita Dutt, the film traverses the journey of a young girl named Bulbbul from innocence to strength,...
