What price are you willing to pay for a second chance?
Hwangkidong19 June 2020
This is a story of second chances. Ji Soo fell madly in love with her college senior Jae Hyun, attracted by his idealism and activism as a protest leader even at the cost of his future. Their first love was the best time of their lives but ultimately they broke up for reasons we only find out much later.

Some 20 years later, we find Ji Soo as a financially struggling single mom who divorced her lawyer husband and gave up alimony and child support in exchange for sole custody of her son. The first few episodes were a difficult watch, as we see our heroine very different from the cheerful and carefree college girl she once was, now into her forties with no college diploma, no professional full-time job and practically no family to support her. While her friendship with ex-blue collar collegues who lost their job reveals her integrity and sense of social justice, alas it also underscores her vulnerable position in society.

What happened to her first love, her well-off family, her college education? What of her first marriage and why she sent her son to a faraway private school she can ill afford and expose both of them to abuse from classmates and snobbish school moms who look down on them because of their social status?

Then we meet Jae Hyun, now VP of a powerful chaebol who just finished his prison sentence for financial fraud. As viewers we can only wonder how the former idealistic student activist turned into the heartless capitalist he is today, with a reputation as a ruthless executive who unfairly fired many employees and contract workers. Then we learn his marriage is failing and his relationship with his chairman father-in-law is about to turn into a full-blown corporate war. Is there more to him than his appearance? Can he ever redeem himself for betraying his own ideals so blatantly?

Then our two former lovers unexpectedly meet. Not too surprisingly they both have lingering feeling for each other though he is way more upfront and warm towards her than she is to him. While he is rich and (in)famous and very caring for her after all these years, we aren't quite convinced he is the right Prince Charming who would rescue his first love from her misery, since he is a married man with a terrible reputation. Will her heart overlook the sins of this idealist-turned-corporate-shark simply because of her nostalgia for her lost first love?

Could this be her last chance to happiness and if so at what price? Or would this lead her down a path she is not prepared to take, till she realizes he is no longer the person she fell in love with almost a lifetime ago?

As usual, Lee Bo Young excels in her portrayal of an intelligent, stoic, upright but financially poor woman who can withstand any abuse to protect the ones she loves. What a beautiful and wonderful actress. The other leads also perform well, especially Jeon So Nee who gives the young Ji Soo an impressive sense of strong will and toughness under the facet of her fragile appearance, girlish innocence and teenage cheerfulness. The supporting actors are good too though they have much less of an impact, as Ji Soo and Jae Hyun only have eyes for each other.

While this show doesn't break any new ground, the story is well told with good pace and without too much dramatic incoherence. Personally, I wish the script writer would have made Jae Hyun's CEO wife a more balanced character with at least some redeeming qualities. It would have made Jae Hyun's decision just a tad more difficult and interesting. As it is, I have enjoyed this show, despite the angsts one usually has to go through with these kinds of melodrama.

Good Enough
PennyReviews15 June 2020
" When my love blooms " had a really sweet past story but the present one was not that great.

First of all, the retro one, when the characters were young, was almost made to perfection. From the poetic cinematography, to the nostalgic feeling, to the presentation of that era, everything was perfect. The timeline did get a bit confusing at times, but that was mainly due to the focus on the present story. Still, the chemistry was over the moon, the love story was sweet, dramatic and moving, and the whole college life along with the family drama were all interesting and nicely managed.

However, the present story was a bit boring. There was a spark between the couple at the beginning, but that kind of died out, as they kept repeating scenes and events, the drama of the business and family matters took over, and the characters were thrown into stereotypical types that had nothing to do with their old selves. I mean, sure they were bound to change, but they still would have kept some traits of themselves, wouldn't they?

Finally, the performances were really good from everyone, but there has to be given a special shout out to the younger actors and the kids of the cast.

So, overall, 6.5 out of 10, because the past story was really enjoyable but the present was boring and predictable.

Solid Melodrama with minor flaws
jengelbkk21 October 2020
I liked: the back and forth between our lead couple from the young to the older. Well written and filmed. Music good (although they could have turned down the melodramatic strings in the background a bit- sounded a bit old), acting very good, especially the young couple. Their chemistry was contagious. As with most Kdramas, a lot is repeated or reframed and, in this case, it slows the story down a bit. If you've seen Itaewon Class, you will possibly have some flashbacks but it's not a bad thing. Overall, worth the time. FYI, I will rate a fim/series a 5 if it is average enjoyable. No rating inflation here. 6 means above average enjoyable.

Loved This Romance Drama
Geeta35215 November 2021
I loved, loved, loved this k-drama from start to finish! What a beautiful love story. I enjoyed it all from Episode one to Episode sixteen. It was a well acted, well directed drama. The flashbacks added to the depth of the story and explained their never ending affection/love for each other. Needless to say, I cried my eyes out throughout the series and I will do it again, because I will definitely watch it again and again. Kudos to all!

Romantic Older Aged Kdrama
KdramaInStudio27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Finally, a 40's romantic kdrama not teenage or mid-twenties. Not, that I don't enjoy those, I do but a story around mid life is equally enjoyable. The main actor who is struggling with some choices in his business and personal life is very handsome and conscionable. In the story, unemployed workers protest being let go. And the silent question is, how much responsibility does the company have to its employees? Americans would not protest being let go from work. In some states, the At Will law applies, and employees can be dismissed for no reason. This is one small piece of the story. The series goes back and forth the present lives of the two people and their past and how they each grew to their now state. Both get married, both have a son and both are unhappy in their marriages. I don't think the show is predictable. You want this kind of ending for the two of them. But, it doesn't come without coast as you will see. I really like how when the show ends encouragement pieces are written in to the watchers. And, a thank you for taking the time to watch the show. Best dressed older male actor and female younger actress.

2 Times in Love
PalmBeachG24 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The series shows the young love of the main characters while they were in college and how they fell in love and were extreme activists on campus. Events including parents disapproval, arrests, jail, military, jealousy, and many many other obstacles kept them apart despite the fact that they loved each other so much. Fate brings them together later in life after growing up and the lead male has changed completely. The next part of the series showcases even more difficult obstacles even though they still love each other because of the man he became, children, family, corporate business, and more. The show keeps playing a lot of flashbacks so you see the same scenes over and over again, which many were cute from younger years, however it becomes quite repetitive. Also one of the main themes of this story is activism vs capitalism and always tries to make capitalism evil and in the ending IMO the becomes quite contradictory when people are supposed to change including Tiffany jewelry in the mix as well as other indicators. My favorite quote from the series is "On earth here are 7 billion people and there are 7 billion love stories. It means everyone has their own love story."

I had better expectations, but still...
Chaokage3 June 2021
The series overall is good with a very satisfying ending. It tackles a lot of current and past social issues through the romantic relationship between the two leads. The recalling scenes of the love story was actually very very interesting to explore. It was kinda the icing in the cake. It shows a different side to how relationships seem to get more complicated as we age. I would say that the series is worth the time since the ending of this series does really make it worthwhile.

Worst kdrama I have seen.
fbcxw4 April 2023
I love kdramas and watch them exclusively but this is unfortunately one that is depressingly sad in EVERY episode. There needed to be more light relief in the plot in my opinion. The adult female lead exhibits no emotion at all to her male lead. The soundtrack made me cringe too: it was the same sad refrain in every episode. The only relief came from the young actors taking the part of the teenaged couple. Their love story was beautifully acted. They brought their characters alive with their on screen chemistry which only deepened the dark portrayal of their elder counterparts. Sorry, but the best episode was the last!

Their love story will make you nostalgic, brilliant
hanalisss24 February 2021
I enjoyed this drama a lot. I loved the past story and made me feel nostalgic wanting to see more of the characters and how they met and what they lived. Commendable performance of the young actors, you fall in love with their story, smile with them and suffer with them too. It has a lot of events and it's well written but Sometimes the main leads frustrated me in their present selves because they were just too different from their past selves, it might make sense because a lot of time had passed and they suffered a lot but it's almost not possible to connect with them like that. But I really enjoyed it and I think it is a great show.

This is a mostly sad but sweet sweet romance
jgardiner-871-72672922 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a long lost love story. First loves meet up latter in life. Each one married with one son. The woman is poor and and man is rich but the woman son is a brilliant scholar that has been accepted by scholarship to a private school where he is being bullied by the mans son. Only that son is making it seem like the the poor woman son is bullying him.

Her husband cheated on her so she divorced him. She is bringing up her son alone ......but suddenly he is wanting custody. She is going to go back to him for fear of losing her son. Sad! Also to protect her first love that she still has feelings for.

What is with these rich people in Korea who look down on people who are less fortunate than themselves? It is so hateful that they do this.

The Korea parents too are so cruel to their children. Her father was a mean one. She sadly gave up her first love because of him. Now who is the one looking after him in hospital when he has dementia? While I'm on this criticism of parents. Why do they send their children so far away for schooling? They emotionally blackmail their children. Her dad said "Out of sight. Out of mind" as he was sending her to Germany to study.

It a sort of very sad first love story. She leaves him to save him but he doesn't know it. His best friend was in love with her too and he gave information to the police that got her love arrested.

She sort of now in the same dilemma.

This is a mostly sad but sweet sweet romance. I wish I could find my sweet lost love like that.

It is very clever how the producers used the two sets of actors to act in the role of the young people and the older people. Then our minds were clear about which time frame was being explained.

I've been trying to predict what will happen next and sure enough. It did. It makes me happy when my predictions come true.

I liked it. Some striking and amazing cinematology and cinematography. I also love areas of scenic beauty where the filming was set.

Very ordinary and boring but great cast
maureendu-3158011 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am very surprised by the reviews of this drama.

I really like every type of dramas and never disliked one. But I found this drama incredibly boring.

However, I really liked the style of the past live story, the actors were great. All the cast were great actually, very good acting and filming.

But seriously, if you have watched a lot of dramas, this one will probably be boring for you.

The story is so simple, 2 people loved each other and the dad of the rich girl didn't approve, he made the boy's life miserable. She had to leave him, and they married other people, had children, and then, found each other again and fought against everyone to be back together.

Fast Forward Fodder
geewhiz461 October 2022
This story took sixteen episodes to tell - it was fairly evenly divided into past and present segments. The story concerns a teenage love affair that broke up due to the usual parental threats and opposition. Many years later both lovers have married and have a child each. Ji-Soo however is now divorced - whilst Jae-Hyun has married for money and does not love his wife. Unfortunately, she is crazy about him.

When Jae-Hyun meets Ji-Soo again, he realises that he still loves her, and although she tries to dismiss it, Ji-Soo still loves him.

There are a lot of corrupt business dealings in the present and a lot of political dealings in the past.

The series suffered because it was simply far too long - too much time was spent in the past - two or three flashbacks would have sufficed to let us know their background. As it was for every present segment there was a past segment that followed it. This slowed the story down to a snail's pace - it was like wading through treacle. Ji-Soo didn't help with her seemingly endless walking scenes and constant miserable expression. Jae-Hyun on the other hand had a happy smiling face most of the time in the present segments. He seems like a very cheerful guy!!

A happy ending of course - if not for everyone. I found the very forward girl in the park - when one of the friends was walking his dogs - to be scarily predatory. You will be a more patient person than me if you can watch this without one finger on the fast forward button.
