Why do "art" attempts in India have to be so pathetic?
nikhil_kamra23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
That's because pretentious movies like this are produced and passed as "art" to viewers.

Points for effort! Honestly! But this movie failed to be anything more than just asthetic.

Copying elements from foreign art films and adding Indian asthetic doesn't make a great movie. The reason why foreign art films work (when they do!) is because they are a genuine work of art. And moreover, original! A word, whose meaning, Indian producers don't seem to grasp!

"What are the odds?" fails to deliver. You don't relate to the cast and/or the story. Or anything, infact! And the characters are shown to be weird, for the sake of being weird because "being weird is coolzz. lulsz."

Literally, anything goes in this movie! And that makes it even worse! Because it makes an already unrelatable piece of crap movie even more unrealtable.

And what's possibly the worst part, is that, no one seems to understand that making pretentious movies like this doesn't make you a good creator. They are just pretentious! And any viewer who is not brain dead can see it so clearly. It's transparent!

It would be cool to call this movie a "gem" and a "true piece of art", if you were a pre-teen who just wanted to be pretentious and "cool". Real world, fortunately, doesn't work that way.

It's a request to all the creators out there: please don't make such pretentious plagiarised films, if you can't actually make some genuine Indian content. You want to make art movies? Try showing something realistic with an actual Indian touch rather than just copying some elements from "Wes Anderson" and similar artists and declaring your movie as an art film.

There are much much better short films out there that are more artistic than this horrendous crap.

As of today afternoon, 23 May 2020, this is trending as No. 4 in India on Netflix. If you're reading this before falling for the trap like I did, watch at your own risk!

I'm sure 95 percent of the viewers would just turn this off after 20-30 minutes of it. I however, stayed till the end. God knows what's wrong with me!

3/10 for this one. Points for effort and asthetic. Only!

Positivity & Sugary innocence
khayaldave20 May 2020
What are the odds?

Netflix Originals. Megha Ramaswamy. 2020

Supported by Abhay Deol & directed by the debutant Megha Ramaswamy the film follows a day in life of two exceptionally diverse teens played by Yashaswini Dayama & Karanvir Malhotra.

In the era of showcasing extreme realism, violence, cut throat action sequences this films comes as a breath of fresh air with its sugary innocence and positivity. What are the odds has that comic bookish and fantasy charisma with excellent use of well composed songs & sequences. Don't expect to get swayed drastically by the film, you won't.

What the heck is this?
almeida-wilson22 May 2020
I keep searching of off-beat movies and hidden gems that could be some best works gone unnoticed. When I saw the poster if this one I must say I was fairly impressed as it was interestingly hand drawn and rather beautiful!

The worst thing about some 'art house' film makers in India is that they kind of deliberately screw it up either by making it meaninglessly cryptic or perhaps following rather copying some foriegn language movies.

I personally found most of the behaviors and actions performed in the movie were quite inappropriate for an Indian context. Also why on earth English? Seedhe Hindi main kar lete? Better still, since the setup was Mumbai, Bambaiyya Hindi, hmm? Would have been way better! One notable thing in this movie is the acting of leading girl. Great job from you! You were way too honest in your work and the rating star I gave goes to you!

When it is a nice 'art' movie, it needn't be so cryptic and overstuffed with jargons. Simple stories of life make way better cinema.

This work will neither entertain you, nor amuse you or surprise you. You will end up thinking "WTF did I watch just now?!" So avoid this one with all your might.

Like a Murakami Book
SnigdhaaN27 December 2021
This movie was almost like a Murakami book with the themes of surrealism it displays. It's a decent watch, a good start for such films in India. Could definitely have had a little more depth, though.

mananupadhyay-8185323 May 2020
Who are these people giving this movie a 10 or 9 rating and saying this is one of the best movies and comparing it with movies like shawshank redemption and dark knight trilogy 🤔. This movie is horrible...Had no idea what was going on. I felt I was high while watching movie. Never ever I have seen such hopeless pathetic movie...

The rating of 5.5 doesn't do justice to this movie.
amartyasingh-596683 July 2020
I'm not sure why this movie was rated such poorly. It is a light hearted, quirky, unique, unconventional movie that will guarantee make you smile. We should be supportive of such movies as it exists on completely unexplored levels in Indian cinema. Creative genius rampant here.

complete fairytale with charismatic characters with magical realism which make us laugh, sad, happy and smile.
pankajnaikwade27 May 2020
What are the odds is a best coming of age film comes from India, it's a universal. The narrative treatment of the film is so beautiful, musical, poetic and well crafted.

It's a perfect journey from being amature to stepping into the maturity ( well it's a subtext ). The characters are so paradoxical to each others, like a girl named vivek (yashaswi dayyama) but her behaviour is very reckless and imprudent with annoying past but somehow she had managed all things to live. A boy named Ashwin is exactly opposite to vivek is a perfect scholar headboy of school, a very discreet kind of boy, both of them meets accidentally in accidental day and film moves with them.

What i most like about the film? Is that how Megha Ramaswamy portrayed these characters with so ease and sophisticatedly. They came , they talk and that uncertain very easy dialogues make us to think.

I always admire the abhay deols choices and guts. He perfectly knows the feel and soul of cinema and i just loved his character in this film. At one point we understand that every mature and adult person's ideology is so amature at certain point somehow and in opposite every amature, teen agers ideology is so deep rooted to basics of nature. I always believe that annoying relationships somehow helps teen agers to be a big heart adults.

Overall it's a complete fairytale with charismatic characters with magical realism which make us laugh, sad, happy and smile.

I have no idea why I chose to watch this movie...
boinkmeister26 May 2020
I couldn't even watch this for 30 mins... I literally closed the movie in the 24th minute. It's as simple as this. In a 70-80 min movie, if you can't establish the key characters and the premise of the plot within 30 mins, it's kinda pointless. I chose this because of Abhay Deol, but I doubt even he can salvage this non-movie.... No idea what was happening... there's exams, there's random grumpy teachers allowing/not allowing students for some random exams, some random old folks dancing in the middle of the street with red jackets on (honestly that song seems like a hallucination after taking some really potent herbs). I think the "bar-bar" scene was the last complete scene of the movie I watched, after which I got distracted by an Instagram video which honestly was much more entertaining. Once I finished that video, I went back to the Netflix screen, but couldn't bring myself to press the Play button again.... I just couldn't, cus I knew as a gut feel that if I didn't understand the first 24-25 mins of the movie, I am pretty sure I will not understand the remaining 50-odd minutes. Read some reviews here which gave incredulously high ratings.... There are only three possibilities for that. 1) either you are the cast/crew trying to spur up ratings; 2) or you are into those super artsy-fartsy cinema that probably only wins pretentious praises at film festivals and nowhere else; 3) or you are smoking some high-quality stuff (in which case, do you mind sharing?)..

As pretentious as it can get
paularjyarishi28 May 2020
People familiar with Ritviz's music videos will immediately sniff out the ham-handed 'artsy' (read fartsy) design of the film.

Throwing in references inspired from Western surrealism, making an effort to look and feel like Wes Anderson, speaking in accentuated English being regular Indians, and trying really hard to pass off any random act of weirdness as a metaphor for oh-so-fashionable rebellion, DOES NOT in ANY way make pretentious poop equivalent to art.

This piece of filth is like the cinematic depiction of the Indian elite intelligentsia- Shallow and clueless, copying smidgens of 'hipster' elements from the West and forcing it down our throats in the name of 'unconventional cinema'.

Watch Satyajit Ray's Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne to get a hint of how fantasy filmmaking is done; watch Disney's Gravity Falls to understand how even magic realist tales can have such a lot of coherence, intelligence and heart.

Shonali Bose, the Indian director, has a strand of hair on her head that's painted glittery blue. 'Coz, you know, she's an intellectual; and she has to prove it in her appearance.

This puddle of vomit belongs to THAT brand of intellectualism.

Read old comics. Or listen to village folktales from your elderly housemaid. You'll experience fantasy way better than wasting your precious time over this.

Indian take on Wes Anderson's style of filmmaking
ManjimaD20 May 2020
Meghna Ramaswamy's What are the Odds? is a brilliant take on Wes Anderson's style of movie making. It is filled with warmth and delivers adorable, whimsical moments that make you laugh.

The cinematography is a 9/10 with brilliant aesthetics.

A musical, magical movie about what are the odds of two oddballs embarking on an unseen journey.
