Not sure what people expected
J-odishaw26 June 2020
If you have watched his show and are upset that all he does is shout then I'm not sure what you are doing here. Yes it's hard to watch, he is known for cringe comedy.

Almost An Extended Monologue
wesleydakins-9222223 June 2020
This special felt like an extended monologue from his television show. There were some good jokes, a funny opening skit, and a funny unscripted ending but a lot of the jokes in the first half felt like rejected bits that only served to alienate people who aren't used to his type of humor. The viewer needs to go in expecting unorthodox and weird.

Wasn't bad wasn't good
brittanydiane1 July 2020
As a fan of Eric's I have watched most of his stand ups. There were a few jokes I had noticed that were recycled which is fine for the people that never had watched him before. For fans of his however, this was a bit disappointing.

With him going political throughout his standup I could see why he would based off of the title "legalize everything" but some of the political stances should've just been left out but not to say they weren't fair points to be made they just weren't fluid I felt with the whole premise.

Eric is known to be goofy and just all over the place which is what it was at the beginning, but it felt like towards the end of the show he was giving up. The phone call at the end with one of the viewers mother on their phone felt a bit scripted and not organic at all but hey I guess that's just part of the act to make it lighthearted and funny to close the show on.

All in all I wouldn't say I would recommend watching this although I would recommend watching The Eric Andre Show because that show is hilarious and honestly throughout the whole standup I maybe had laugh only once.

Disappointed fan

Warning: Spoilers
I like Eric Andre and so far enjoyed everything I've seen from him...but what the hell was this supposed to be? If all the "hey guys, weed is awesome, amirite???" crowd work was meant to be an ironic take on douche-bro spring-break stand-up, it was lost on me. Maybe it was the room? The audience did look and feel very young, drunk, and rowdy, and quite low-brow, so maybe Eric had to adjust his style for the night, but then why did he use this footage for his Netflix special?

But the earnest, laboured low-brow-comedy wasn't the worst part - that was when Eric decided to do some scripted / staged FaceTime call to someone's mum who was surprisingly unsurprised and played along a little too "yes-and-y" to be believable. It was clearly a scripted bit which Eric tried to sell as unscripted - which in itself is a thing Eric has satirised and mocked on his show over and over again.

To see him become something that I thought he'd reject and dislike based on his earlier work was almost a bit shocking.

Let's hope this was a one-time slip-up.

Enjoyable, but Annoying
MessMaker26 June 2020
Yes, he's loud. Yes, he's on about being on something... and, seemingly on something. And it's definitely on the nose (the comedy, not the coke) and sometimes in your face with the yelling.

But I found it all rather amusing. I'm not a drug user at all, I don't even drink or like the premise. And, gosh, this man loves it all.

But, he was sufficiently entertaining at the end of a night in, while not paying 100% attention but still watching most of it. Likeable dude, a little annoying yet enjoyable performance, funny jokes and there's meaning to a lot of it.

Very Hit & Miss
Superparanatural26 June 2020
I sympathise with the reviewers who say this special was plainly unfunny; I felt the same around ten minutes in. Notwithstanding, Eric Andre did make a few genuinely funny jokes, the brunt of which was enough to keep me through until the end. A lot of it is, however, just Eric screaming, which gets annoying quickly. Most of my enjoyment for the special stemmed from watching Eric's mannerisms, detached from what he says; he is a legitimately crazy person. All this said, Eric was never meant to be a stand-up comedian, and though I did enjoy the show, it wasn't because he's a good comic; it's because he is actually insane.

screaming about drugs isnt very edgy in 2020
seangalivan27 June 2020
I love Eric Andrew but wow this was difficult to sit through. I'm fully aware his abrasive style is a large part of the appeal but this was almost entirely void of any the wit or charm that is usually incorporated in his work. The screaming dude, good lord. This special does an active disservice to the agenda of legalizing all drugs lmao

Eric Andre Is Back, And Just As Good As Usual
brobmac24 June 2020
Enjoyed the special. Isn't necessarily my type of comedy but I can respect it, and think he deserves more credit than he gets outside of his cult following. If you like his show, you'll love this. Less props, more Eric. He may not be better than he's ever been, but he's as good as usual, and that's better than a lot of people wish they could be. Keep on chugging Mr. Andre. Respect.

Cringe without the comedy
junjujinz4 July 2020
I want to start this review by talking a bit about the Eric Andre Show. Cringe comedy is a difficult style to make work, but Eric generally does it very well on his show. The formula for Eric's success is the genuine reactions from his guests on his talk show segments, and the genuine reactions from passerby's on his man-on-the-street segments. Although his show is comedic, Eric is not what I'd consider a comedian. Eric is a comedy catalyst, he is very skilled at creating a situation wherein an unsuspecting person is caught so off-guard by his antics that their genuine reactions of confusion, fear, disgust, or hatred come to light, which is very fascinating and humorous to watch. A good example of this is when Eric "threw up" in front of Lauren Conrad and proceeded to slurp the "vomit" off his desk; Lauren looks away, shocked, covers her mouth, gags, and flees from the stage. Eating vomit isn't funny, watching someone get disgusted by someone eating vomit is. I suppose what I'm trying to say is, watching Eric Andre's newest stand-up special feels like watching a guy eat his own vomit for an hour. His style of comedy doesn't work for stand-up, because this format doesn't provide the viewer with the satisfaction of dramatic irony. Eric is in on the joke, the live audience is in on the joke, and the viewer at home is in on the joke. Unlike his show, there's nobody to laugh at. Eric is not a comedian in the traditional sense, his jokes are really bad, he isn't charming, he's excessively loud, and he's generally just a gross dude. All of those qualities are to his detriment in a stand-up setting, and they are all to his benefit in the setting of his show. Much like a man eating his own vomit to entertain people, Eric's performance came off as forced and depressing. I found myself holding a distressed smile during the ordeal while hoping he'd say something funny or interesting, like when you don't want to hurt the feelings of the mentally handicapped student in your class that has been talking to you non-stop for the past five minutes. Although it was a slog to get through, I'm ultimately glad I watched this special because it has given me a whole new appreciation for the Eric Andre Show.

Not as advertised, but watch again please.
elmstreetfan-230817 July 2020
As a very long time Eric fan, i had a huge pause when i heard he was filming a "stand up" special. He's never really been known for his conventional jokes but rather the shock and intensity. While my biggest gripe was that he used many old jokes, i think he created something very different here. While most hear screaming and nonsense, i think he's conveying thoughts on modern culture and throwing it back on the kids in the crowd who clearly don't see it. I give a 7 mainly due to joke recycling.

It gets better toward the end...
CalicoLeaf4 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I suspect it gets better because in the beginning he's high on coke, and as it goes in he starts to come down. I'm not here to hate on coke, but his comedy clearly suffers when he's on it.

At the beginning he's loud, yelling, obnoxious, and gets few laughs from the crowd. His massive focus on his high-school-like drug stories is basic. It's nothing new.

As the show goes on, he draws the audience back in by calming down and not just using volume to "land" a joke. Basically, when he moves on from talking about drugs his show improves.

Eric can't stand up without the clever editing and effects from his show
Near-L23 June 2020
It has some funny parts but mostly is just him exaggerating everything and unlike his show is not random enough to make it funny, it's just awkward. His Adult Swim Commencement speech on youtube is 6 minutes long and its 1000 times funnier. Love Eric Andre but he looks like he just snorted cocaine and improvised everything on stage and it's pretty terrible unfortunately.

Don't be a white supremacist and watch this
uptempo-137852 July 2020
If you know his work you're aware of his high energy performance. If you're not aware, you probably won't like it because you would've heard of him by now. It's not exactly a timeless classic, it's not trying to be. It's not exactly everyone's pallette, but it's by no means a bad watch. So if you find yourself disliking it, you might be one of the people he talks about?

A good standup special that might not be for everybody
Jeremy_Urquhart2 July 2020
It's far from the most consistent standup special I've seen, and it took me a little while to get into it, but once I settled in it was genuinely very funny. I'm not hugely familiar with The Eric Andre Show, but had seen enough clips to more or less know what I was in for with an Eric Andre standup special. It could've easily gone on a little longer, because 50-something minutes is a bit on the short side, but if you're a fan of his sense of humour I can't see why you wouldn't get something out of this show. (Also the fact he did voice work in a Disney movie makes some of the cruder jokes here extra funny, but I don't know if that's just me.)

Write some actual jokes
luke-4385723 June 2020
Shock humor and drug experiences don't qualify as comedy. I chuckled a few times but this was weak. All Andre talks about is how many drugs he's done, yells, talks about drugs some more, asks the audience what drugs they like, and then they all shout for cocaine and LSD. I'm not against drugs, I agree, we should legalize everything, but do a comedy set, not a 50 minute monologue about your drug experiences. Loud doesn't equal funny, and over exaggerating the effects of drugs doesn't equal funny either. I love his show, I think it's great, but this just wasn't it. He could do so much better for an hour special.

This show is one of the funniest comedy specials I have ever seen. While the first half starts off a bit slow, the ending is hilarious and will have you on the floor

I love Eric Andre. I tried to laugh for the entire 50 minutes but I just couldn't. He was just screaming and shouting for 50 minutes straight. With an unfunny way.

This is an exceptional special. It's so intelligent that you need three degrees to understand it. Do you have three degrees? That's probably why you don't understand it.

Sometimes comedy just isn't funny.
jonplac24 June 2020
This was one of the worst stand-up specials I've ever seen!

If you enjoy hearing a comedian try and be as loud as humanly possible in order to obtain laughs then this is within your ballpark. Otherwise, the lazy subject matter and the crude over-embellished way that it was presented left you wanting to go back to the home screen on netflix after the first 15 minutes. Unfortunately for me and my lack of good life choices I decided to stick it out to see if it turned a corner.

Instead it simply hair pinned straight into a dumpster which proceeded to catch fire.

Not sure what Netflix was thinking when they decided to film this but not only was it a waste of money but it will be a waste of the time of their subscribers as well. Save yourself 51 minutes of your life and scroll on by.

I exhaled out of my nose a few times
Michaelg75423 June 2020
I love the Eric Andre Show but this wasn't my cup of tea. I'm not really the biggest fan of these Netflix comedy specials and I felt that this one was pretty average. There's none of the outlandish humor Eric Andre is known for and this felt quite juvenile even for Eric Andre's standards. If you're a fan of the show I can't say you'd like this that much. If you enjoy being bombarded with jokes about weed and lsd, I'm sure you'd enjoy.

While his humor isn't for everyone, there is no denying the man is a genius at what he does, it seems to be more than just "shock comedy". I give my stamp of approval
