slow & tedious
axlerod8822 April 2022
I have no problems with the acting as all did a fairly decent job with what they were given & this is the problem with this movie.

There are really no scares in this movie & what there is, you literally cannot see what is happening because it is too dark. This movie is like 80% shot in low light conditions. People are walking around in the dark for most of this movie.

Darkness alone does not create tension or scares. Especially if you can't see what is going on. With a better script & direction, this could have been decent.

a high voltage...
ops-5253515 April 2022
Production , at just half of whats needed in the european el. Outlets. A slow plotted, and not so scary, more like a keltic riddle and a gloryhole in the wall that may swallow you or not, had there been an eye in the wallpaper pattern , it wouldve enhanced the scary feelings alot

its a film with unused potential, the cast do their job within reason and headshaking, but not more than that, the intro section gives hope, the 1st part also, but when the mating and making begins its like a whale stranded.

So its some weird mental stuff to scare the utube generation, not a grumpy old man as me. Long slow and a bit boring would be my secondary headline.

below average

Acting was a bit amateur at times. The plot was ok, there were some chilling scenes - probably the best part about this film. I have watched horror films where the director couldn't even get the audience to feel any dread but there were a couple of times this film gave good scare effects but I turned off for the last 10 minutes, who knows if I missed the best part, it got so bad towards that point and the story was essentially over when I saw there was another 10 minutes left I just thought meh, director had to drag out the ending which was already a let down. The part that really really bothered me for some reason is the main character hanging up a mirror with a nail the size of a needle and then commanding it to stay! Only to turn around and the thing inevitably comes crashing down. It was a heavy expensive looking mirror and she knew it wasn't going to "stay" so that really annoyed me but the director had to annoy me further by making her then forget within 10 seconds that it had fallen and she walks all over the broken glass (not injuring herself in any way). I don't know why someone breaking an expensive looking mirror like that annoyed me. It added nothing to the film whatsoever, maybe breaking a mirror is bad luck? It's the one thing I took from this film and can't get it out of my head. If her friend had pointed out breaking a mirror was bad luck then it would have redeemed itself for me a little but her friend could barely act and might as well have been a brain dead zombie throughout the whole film instead of the sleep walking alcoholic she was portrayed as.

Why is it called room 203 when the room is clearly not on the 2nd floor
markwbell25 July 2022
Slow paced well acted. Looks and feels like a Japanese movie. Which it is adapted from. I can't get over exterior shots of the room and the interior shots of the views from the room's windows are clearly not shot from the 2nd floor.

Worth watching once
mooman-1584417 July 2022
It's entertaining but as soon as the "scary" stuff happens the movie is basically a pitch black screen and can't see anything at all. Wayyyyy too much flickering lights and hard to even see anything I do not know why every horror movie thinks it's good to have flickering lights. You never get to see what's in the hole in the wall... One scene the guy looks down at it but instead of showing you what it is, just shows a pitch black scene. Plus 2 girls and not even a boob scene. Why add the played out nonsense flickering lights and dark scenes so bad you can't see what's going on but you leave out the boobs. Could've been a 7-8 but they kinda ruined it as soon as things start happening.

Well, if you have problems sleeping...
paul_haakonsen24 April 2022
I sat down to watch the 2022 horror movie "Room 203" from writers Ben Jagger, John Poliquin and Nick Richey without having heard anything about the movie. I liked the movie's cover/poster, and the fact that it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen was sufficient to make me give the movie a chance.

Talk about a slow paced and dull movie. I suffered through 56 minutes of pure boredom here, and the only thing happening in nearly an hour was a mirror falling from a wall, something feathered crawling into a hole in a wall and a roommate bleeding from the scalp in the middle of the night.

The acting performances in the movie were actually fair enough. I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, and that is something I enjoy in movies. Just a shame that the actors and actresses virtually had nothing worthwhile to work with here in terms of a proper script, storyline or character gallery.

With "Room 203" being a horror movie, then I have to say that director Ben Jagger failed to deliver anything wholesome, anything entertaining, and worst of all anything scary.

Sure, there was a good enough production value to the movie, but it could just do nothing to make up for all the shortcomings of the movie. And I will also be generous enough to say that the atmosphere in the movie was quite good, but again it just wasn't sufficient to make up for the movie's shortcomings either.

Yeah, believe me when I say that I am not returning to watch the rest of "Room 203", because it is frightfully boring and downright a waste of time and effort. If you enjoy the horror genre, do yourself a favor and skip this particular movie. The cover was actually the best part about the movie.

I am rating "Room 203" a generous two out of ten stars.

Here is my free advice
109YearsOld16 April 2022
What kind of idiot would put on a necklace found deep inside a stinky glory hole?

What kind of idiot would go into the deserted basement barefoot in the middle of the night?

You will see two such idiots in this boring movie that I managed to finish in 15 min. Again, be warned.

Do the Lights Work in the Apt?
PizzaQueen071224 July 2022
Didn't understand why the Kim chick never cut on the lights after hearing and seeing strange stuff at night. Except, when getting it on with the geeky dude. And why continue to sleep in a room with a creepy hole in the wall? The couch looked comfortable. Nothing compelling here. Nothing stands out. Ending is the same old same old.

Warning: Spoilers
I would have liked this movie a whole lot better if I could see it. It was entirely too dark! Yes I understand that they wanted to 'set the mood' for it but at least turn on a lamp in a scene so we can see what's going on. Other than that, it's an average horror film I thought. Better than alot out there. Some parts were a little too quirky for me though.

Half Good
gab-6759916 April 2022
Reading some of the reviews about this movie and it is NOT trash. Just low budget, I would say B- at best. If you like Indy's and horrors then this movie was just ok, a slow burn. Not a jump out and scare you type flick but I have seen worse so yeah. The 2 leads were good at times and then really fake acting other times. I would not recommend to anyone I know, and I myself will not be seeing it again. But it was not horrible, like someone said to see the new movie X, now that movie was just fing stupid. But, everyone has different tastes in movie so watch this one and maybe you will like it, who knows. I say check out Bloody Punch or All I Need, those are way better Indy flicks.

Well worth a watch
johnboop22 July 2022
This movie is very captivating.

It kept me interested all through.

The actors were very good, especially the Kim and Izzy!

I can't understand how people would rate this a 1 or 2. For what it is, and basically no name actors it was excellent.

I would like to see more of these actors in the future.

Fun Horror Chill Movie
Lifepastime16 April 2022
Text: Yes. It's not exactly an original story. But definitely kept my interest! There was a genuine feel for Kim and Izzy, The dark and mysterious tone of the film brought a genuine gothic vibe. I really liked that aspect. The actors overall were solid. I'd give it an 7.5 but I did feel they could have taken it a notch up on the scare. Overall, l'll watch again.

Dreck
dana-kellish3 September 2022
No need to go into too many details. It's too long for what it wants to do. It's slow. It's dull. It's ludicrous. The characters are ridiculous (despite the fact that a horrible smell coming out of a disgusting hole in the wall is mentioned repeatedly, at no point do the two residents of the apartment even bother to mention it to the landlord, an actor who seems to be doing a bad John Malkovich impression). It's clumsy (a character begins a relationship with woman she meets, who is promptly forgotten and never heard from again. The characters you expect to live do, and the ones you imagine will die do, in fact, die. It contains precious few scares of any sort, psychological or physical. It is entirely - entirely - predictable, without a single original thought or idea thrown in. The adversary is mostly unseen, never properly described, lacks motivation, and is way too easily defeated.

I'm the sort who rarely allows himself to turn off even a bad horror film, but I wish I hadn't even started this one. Seriously, it's not any good.

Boring
dave_lives15 April 2022
How a movie that makes a 1 hr 44 min runtime feel like it's gone for 4 hours is a feat in itself. So much character development and we still feel nothing for the two main girls.

Poorly acted, poorly written, boring as any movie I can think of. Avoid.

Terrible acting.
cscott233119 July 2022
The absolute best part of this whole movie is the older black man telling his story. The acting from everyone else is terrible. Giggling 20 somethings acting like they're 12, just grated my last nerve. The storyline wasn't all that bad it was the execution. It just fell short in so many ways!! More history would've been great. More intrigue was much needed. More action and more scary parts seeing as how there was VERY little of each. Different cast for sure. Anyway it's a cheesy "horror" flick, if you can even say horror. It's free but even that won't be enough in the end, at least it wasn't for me.

Average at best
boltsfan90925 June 2023
I like the attempt at something a little different in a genre that is saturated with poor excuses for remakes, and the same old plot over and over again only getting worse each time. This movie could have been onto something if not for the mediocre cinematography. Very monotone in most scenes, and overplaying the use of darkness and shadows. I'm always a fan of giving up and coming actors a shot at their big break, but the lack of believability only gives way to a poor attempt at emotion. Sad to say that a decent plot has been lost in very underwhelming performances. Different casting and a change in the visuals could of made up for an average script.

Save yourself.
dustinhooper-0035921 July 2022
Absolute trash. Terrible acting, I mean really really bad. Boring slow paced, typical regurgitated horror tropes. Save yourself the time. It's already dropped from a 5.2 to 4.3 since released on Hulu. That should speak volumes.

Don't waste your time. This movie sucked. The idea was just like ever other horror movie. The acting was atrocious and there are unresolved plot lines. Overall this movie was just weird and uncomfortable. I would recommend X if you are looking for something good.

Decent Ideas and Set Up, but Lacked Punch
Reviews_of_the_Dead19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie that I got the chance to see as a screener thanks to Justin Cook. I read a bit about the movie from the press release that came with it and it sounded interesting enough. I did see that this was based on a novel written by Nanami Kamon, which intrigued me. Other than that, I came into this one blind. I'll be brief here and give that the synopsis which is: two best friends and roommates are terrified by the vengeful spirits dwelling in their apartment.

For this movie, we start hearing music coming from a box and chanting in what appears to be a different language. It also looks like they're doing a ritual. It then shifts to a guy who is fixing up a room. This is an apartment and the last tenants moved out. There is a hole in the wall. Despite having fixed it, the putty is falling out. The guy's boss tells him that this always happens. No matter what they do, this hole won't go away. Our guy puts his arm in the hole and finds a necklace. His girlfriend shows up there later and he gives it to her. This becomes a nightmare though when she kills herself.

The movie then takes us to Kim White (Francesca Xuereb). Her parents are driving her into the city. They're Samuel (Patrick Kirton) and Ann (Susan Kirton). They aren't happy though. They are quite upset with their daughter and scolding her. What they say is quite hurtful as well. They tell her that if she is serious about this to not come home and ask for their help. We learn the reason is they don't like her best friend Izzy Davis (Viktoria Vinyarska).

I'll introduce her backstory here, as it is tragic. Her mother died of an accidental overdose. We will see that Izzy has her own demons as she looks to be in the early stages of alcoholism. She is moving here to be an actor where Kim is going to the local college. Her major is journalism. Izzy is a bit shocked that Kim's parents didn't come in to help her. Upstairs, they're greeted by their landlord of Ronan (Scott Gremillion). He informs them of the rules, which includes to not remove any of the furnishings in the apartment. They're not to touch the stained glass window that is in the apartment and the basement is off limits.

We see our two ladies as they settle in. Their first night involves some heavy drinking. Kim notices the wallpaper that was put up is loose. She then finds the hole and it freaks her out. She tries to put a mirror, but it won't stay. This is just the start of weird things that happen. Izzy finds the necklace from the beginning in the wall and decides to wear it.

From here, Izzy goes out every night and it ends with her getting an audition. Kim oversleeps her orientation, but in the process meets Ian (Eric Wiegand). The two of them hit it off. Things don't go as planned though as Izzy spirals. Odd things start to happen and they have nightmares. We see there could be a murderous and vengeful spirit living in their apartment or is Izzy doing these things while sleepwalking?

That is where I'm going to leave my recap and introduction to our characters. Where I'm going to start is that we have a good set up here. I'll be honest though, it is a bit generic to other movies you've seen if you're a veteran horror fan. I like what they do with creating characters with a bit of depth though. We are mostly focusing on them so that is where I'll start as well.

Since Kim is our lead, she will be the first character to delve into. It is interesting in that her parents seem normal. They're overbearing, but they also say some hurtful things toward her. She is trying to better herself. It might not be according to their plan. It could be a bit over the top, but I also have seen parents like this. What I do like is that she is going to school for journalism. It explains why she is doing the investigation to learn as much about this apartment that she can. What I will also say is that I think she fits as our lead. Xuereb is also quite attractive.

Where I'll go then would be her roommate of Izzy. She is interesting as the rougher one. She reminds me during my college years. She is a bit wild and wants to go out all the time. She has lofty dreams of being an actor. We do see that she has a dark past with her mother's suicide. It feels like there are unresolved issues there. She is turning to drinking as a way to cope. The beginning stages of addiction lead me to how the story is presented.

Now for this movie, much like many in this subgenre, we are getting that there could be a logical explanation or something supernatural. For the former, we could say that Izzy is killing people in the apartment. The opening scenes disprove this, but I like that our characters don't know about that yet. Izzy is drinking a lot. She also reveals that she used to sleepwalk. We also see that she has a temper. You could explain that she is spiraling here and killing people. As I said earlier though, we know about the first death and that there is something supernatural here. Much like her co-star, I'd say that Vinyarska fit the role and she also has a good look for the role.

Something I should say, I'm a sucker for mythology. When you have a story like this and can introduce lore that is new to me, you have me hooked. This one is using a Celtic goddess named Morrígu as its entity. It is supposed to be the goddess of war, death and revenge. This is fitting and I like what they dig up about it. There are things that we see that are incorporated. If anything, I could have used more to be honest.

I do have to go over to a negative though. This movie pulled in my interest, but it becomes a generic 'ghostly' movie in my opinion. It is a bit of a shame. There were some reveals that I saw coming. Some of things that it built up don't have a strong enough payoff for me. None of these ruins the movie. I'm not sure I will come back to as it doesn't stand out due to this though.

From there, I would say that the rest of the acting is fine. I think that Wiegand and Gremillion are both solid enough in their roles. Neither of them gets a lot of screentime and they are there to push our two roommates to where they end up. We don't get much in the way of effects. From what I remember, there was some CGI that didn't look great. Not enough to ruin the movie. The practical effects were fine. I do think this movie is shot well though. I did want to give credit to the cinematography. Other than that, the soundtrack fit for what was needed without stand out either.

In conclusion, this movie had some promise, but it doesn't do much to set it apart. I like the lore they are using here as it is something different. I think our two leads are solid and the rest of the cast helped to push them where they needed to end up. The practical effects were good while some of the CGI makes it feel cheesy. I do think the cinematography was solid and the soundtrack was fine. This movie is a bit generic unfortunately. Not one I plan to revisit, but if you are into movies like this, it is worth a viewing.

My Rating: 6 out of 10.

What? Why?
jedediahthomas28 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have long thought of creating an account to express my frustration with terrible movies and this one happened to be bad enough to motivate me to do it.

Usually when there's a movie this bad at least some of the reviews state the real reason why. Unfortunately the reviews were as bad as the movie in highlighting the main problem.

Most reviews talked about bad acting or the movie being boring or predictable. It wasn't. Those issues would have been a marked improvement.

Pros: This is not the worst movie ever made. The architecture is a great setting and you can appreciate the attempt at making the characters relatable. I felt interested in what was going to happen the entire way through.

Cons: Being on a meth fueled hallucinogenic rage is not the ideal state of mind to write a movie script.

The reality is this movie made absolutely no sense. And I'm not even talking about the characters. The movie itself was a mess of conflicting storylines from start to finish.

The room is clearly haunted. The hole in the wall is framed as the source of the haunting. It isn't, and the haunting extends past the room.

That's a rather big problem when your movie is titled after a room. They could have literally been in any room of the building and the story probably could have played out the same way.

Why is the basement suddenly and inexplicably part of the haunting? What is the source of the haunting? The hole? The window? The building? The ritual? The necklace? The murder? The fact that it's explained in the movie doesn't even help clear it up.

What are the powers of the haunting force? Where did the guy go who was stabbed? Why does the landlord not just drug them and sacrifice them instead of creeping around like an oversized oompah loompah?

Why does it matter if the being is released from the window? What are the consequences of the events that transpired? This movie had me asking why at literally every turn.

Which kept it from being boring. But it made it frustrating to watch. The rules of the haunting are not at all defined and events happen in absolutely haphazard manner.

I don't know how so many reviews said it was predictable when it was so incoherent nothing could have been foreseen. And not in a good way. Very much in a brain dying from lack of oxygen, playing out completely random non related images sort of way.

I wish the movie was boring. I wish it was predictable. I wish it made enough sense to be either. But it didn't, and it wasn't, and now you finally have a review telling the truth.

If coherence doesn't matter to you, I guess this is a decently filmed expose of why set lighting is important. But every single other flaw of the movie was overshadowed by a plot with bigger holes than the wall could ever hope to have.

It had so much potential, but the lack of logical events lands it a solid 2/10.

Bad on every level
thedivide28 April 2022
The entire premise was idiotic.

The acting was OK but I still didn't care about any character.

The movie was so dull it literally put me to sleep.

Any good reviews for this movie are being paid or like wasting people's time.
