Slow, staged but not bad
duncan-ward11 September 2020
I couldn't watch this film in one hit, it was too slow. Slow paced films work when they hold your interest in character, this fell short somewhere. Plot was OK but the reveals were mistimed. It was also very staged but in a way that it was hard to maintain the suspension of disbelief. Glad I watched it to the end as it ties up nicely if dark Disney is your thing but this film missed a trick somewhere. It wasn't bad, the lead actors did well but it really needed padding perhaps a bit more money for extras...

Collateral revisited
nicobos25 August 2020
Story was ripped from Collateral. You're better off sticking to the original with Tom Cruise an Jamie Foxx.

One of the best "bad" movies ever
A_Different_Drummer26 August 2020
Can't believe I watched to the end. Your first thought is, Mark Dacascos is the same age as Tom Cruise but Cruise must have alien DNA because Dacascos looks his age .. and Cruise never does. Your second thought is, if they spent more than $10K making this move, they were overcharged. Your third thought is, was there actually a script, or did the director shoot it in one day and let the actors ad-lib? And your last thought, before the credits roll, is that Dacascos gives the performance of his life, of his career, bad script and all.

Decent and entertaining
BongoJustice29 August 2020
The people saying this is a rip off of Collateral are lazy and wrong. It's a hitman in a taxi but that's where the similarity ends.

It's not great - some of the supporting actors are pretty terrible - and the story fizzles out somewhat towards the end. But it's a decently entertaining action movie for a saturday night.

It exists

When I first read the description, I knew the storyline sounded familiar, but it took reading other reviews to remember the original title. Once I had Collateral in mind, I decided that I could fill my time with Mark Dacascos. I mean, he IS a better fighter than Tom Cruise, so surely this would be at least cheesy action fun.

Wrong!

Boring, slow paced, with no really good fights. Too many "interesting" camera tricks and editing choices that really come across as the director being too full of themselves.

Dacascos is an alright actor, but he is the best person in this movie. All the Thai actors would have sounded far less stilted had they been speaking Thai, and that might have even taken the edge of some of the cliche and cheesy dialogue.

I was merely meh about the whole thing until the third act. Then it took a sharp downhill turn into annoying and lame. Someone definitely missed the mark with attempting the drama and story, and should have just made a kung fu version of Collateral.

To say that this is a copy of the Cruise/Fox movie, is an insult to that movie. This is absolute dross. Ridiculously slow. Terrible acting, choreography, and direction will have you nodding off in no time.

I love movies like this

Basic to the point, good acting all around. Mark Dacascos is a really underrated actor. The man puts so much into his acting skills. And new comer Vanida Golten who played Fha was very good for her first role. I hope to see her in future films. Shes a very beautiful actress. Give this movie a shot.

Basically Tom Cruise "Collateral" but on a very small budget, filmed in Thailand
akcenat7 October 2020
Ultimately, "One Night in Bangkok" is below average attempt to re-tell a story told many times before. Mark Dacascos deserves better. Avoid.

A fine piece of revenge . . .
clivejamesrd26 August 2020
By all metrics this is much better movie fare than the garbage Hard Kill. That one is a real mangy dog. This one is not an original story but still engaging enough for the duration and good performances from the lead male and female. Others do well enough holding up their ends. It ain't Hitchcock or De Palma, but it's very watchable.

Uninspired yawn of a movie
YoniSade29 August 2020
The script and dialog were quite bland, and the little action it had to offer was kinda generic and partially lame. At some point I had to skip forward to give it one more chance before I fall asleep.

What a waste of both Marc's and Kane's talents. The director/writer past credentials aren't great either and I guess I was curious if he can redeem himself. I was proven wrong.

For it's low budget it is nearly perfect
jon-2264330 August 2020
If you now BKK you will love it, as plot takes place at night in BKK city. Acting of the main characters is very good, and some Thai actors there that deserves to get jobs in Hollywood films. It is a slow paced, different kind of movie, very low budget so the blood and injuries makeup work is very basic so it looks fake, but the point is that you see with very basic tools they ended up with a good result. If you've been to BKK watch it, I do hope to see Vanida Golten in movies, she steals the show.

Dacascos is back in action...
paul_haakonsen25 August 2020
I was lured in to watch the 2020 movie from writer and director Wych Kaosayananda mostly because the movie starred Mark Dacascos. But of course, with it being a new movie that I hadn't already seen, that too was a factor that played in on me ending up sitting down to watch "One Night in Bangkok".

And wow, this movie turned out to be a nice surprise. I really liked the movie for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, the storyline. While it was sort of simplistic, there was just something appealing to the storyline and the motivation of the characters that were in the story. And of course Mark Dacascos, he is always a blast to watch in movies. But also the fact that it is a semi-Asian movie, that was also appeal; and by that I mean it was set in Thailand, but had an English dialogue.

"One Night in Bangkok" is a story- and character-driven movie, and it is spiced up with some nice enough action and fight scenes. But I must admit that I really enjoyed the storyline and the way that director Wych Kaosayananda presented the storyline visually on the screen.

And the movie had a good cast, that of course helped the movie along quite nicely as well. Not much need to mention Mark Dacascos, because he does what he does best apparently. But Vanida Golten - playing Fha - was also contributing something good to the story with her performance. I am not familiar with her, but she really carried herself well in this movie.

I can warmly recommend that you take the time to sit down and watch "One Night in Bangkok", especially if you are a fan of Mark Dacascos, because this was definitely one of his better movies in some time.

My rating of "One Night in Bangkok" is a solid seven out of ten stars.

I challenge you to stay awake
TheTruthofItIs10 September 2020
I just wrote a review for "Rogue" that described it as boring but this is not only boring but induces sleep! What's this unknown director thinking?! The first ten minutes follows Mark Dacascos ("Kai") as if he's a sight to behold, watching him do the most mundane things, you can feel yourself age! Dude is 56 but looks 66. It gets a bit better after the 11-min mark, but not by much, he's doing the vengeance thing during one night in Bangkok but he just doesn't sell it, he's not a killing machine, he's a geriatric. A few scenes of Bangkok highlight the viewing but you'll be disappointed to find that they apparently couldn't afford to license 1984's hit "One Night in Bangkok" (Murray Head), I feel cheated.

One Night in Bangkok
cmp_gr21 April 2021
I liked this film very much. One shouldn't compare it with Collateral (2004), because of a superfluous similarity. The two films are very different. "One Night in Bangkok" is more than a thriller and/or an action film. It's of deeper sense, with nice dialogues, well written story, good acting, especially by Mark Dacascos, emotion and of course some action, although one shouldn't focus to that.

I do recommend it.

My vote: 7/10.

Bad copy of Collateral
Movietajm9 November 2020
Well, this was not a supprise... A plain copy of Collateral with altered story and a bad setup of "actors". Even for a rainy day, this movie is not watchable, mostly because of the actors that act like they are reading directly from a paper... There is many b-movies with low ratings that still entertains, this is not one of them....

A below average copypasta.
jessefelt16 May 2021
Being practically a carbon copy og Collateral isn't really enough to warrant a poor score. It may be lazy, but I've seen it result in the copies being better than the copied.

No what really kills this is the acting and writing. The dialog was written by either a grade schooler or an alien who has never had a conversation with another human being. Nobody in the cast even approaches "actor" level of skill aside from Mark Dacascos, and even his performance is subpar, "doin' it for the paycheck" level.

Mechanically the film is well shot, though pretty standard fare. There are no glaring issues with the audio mix. The score is inoffensive, if bland. The pacing is decent, and the film does not push the boundaries of holding one's attention.

An Unusal Movie for Sure
tkdlifemagazine2 December 2022
There are elements of this thriller, quasi-action movie that I liked a lot. It is unusual, for sure. The pacing and the story are very unique. The revenge story has an unusually tempered tone, which is one of the things I think people did not like about it. It is is little long, and a little disconnected in the story but the point gets across. I think the acting is unusually good for a low budget, foreign film. Mark Dacascos is very good in this. I found his character's motive to be sympathetic, but his execution of his revenge is maybe too cerebral to land emotionally. The supporting cast is very, very strong in this. Worth watching.

Collateral with extra drama
psyismylife25 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Acting is weak, police officer tries to act like vin diesel. Chewing the plot in the car over and over Same idea like Collateral movie but with additional drama in the story, had to watch it because I appreciate Mark Dacascos so was worth the watch.

Unexploited potential
kluseba3 September 2020
One Night in Bangkok is a stylish action thriller with dramatic undertones. It is heavily inspired by Hollywood blockbuster Collateral in particular but also reminds of other gritty genre films such as the Taken franchise for instance. This movie features veteran actor and martial artist Mark Dacascos who still has a lot of style, skills and charisma. The film takes place over the course of one single night that sees the mysterious protagonist assassinating different targets throughout the city. A guilt-ridden cab driver unknowingly assists the quiet hitman as she brings him to different locations such as police stations, hospitals and dance clubs.

There are quite a few positive things to mention about this movie. Marc Dacascos still has the skills to be an intriguing lead actor and he indeed incarnates the shady lead character authentically. The beginning of the movie builds up some tension and leaves several questions unanswered. The diversified locations in Bangkok are quite intriguing. The sound effects are solid and the soundtrack provides atmospheric vibes that enhance the cinematic experience. The solid action scenes are gritty and become more intense as the movie progresses. The film has overall good pace and manages to entertain throughout a reasonable running time.

However, the film isn't without its flaws. The background story of the protagonist is explained too quickly and takes away the tension built up throughout the opening thirty minutes. The plot itself is unimaginative, predictable and too hevaily inspired by the movies mentioned in the introduction. The supporting characters are at times wooden which is also due to lifeless dialogues and strange plot elements that will make you scratch your head.

The worst element are however the presence of several mistakes in the movie. For instance, the protagonist offers the cab driver one thousand dollars and an additional five thousand dollars in cash for driving him from one location to another. However, a few scenes later, the protagonist suddenly reveals that he has only four thousand dollars left. Another example is the fact that the investigating police officers suddenly refer to the female lead character by using the actual name of the actress which is quite confusing.

Other strange plot elements include a police officer who shoots a hostage multiple times for no apparent reason, another police officer's wife who mysteriously sympathizes with a mass murderer whom she has never even met and the protagonist who got shot multiple times and still stands up again every single time to fight off multiple enemies.

The pretentious scenes shot with a shaky, unfocused and unbalanced camera near a beach that start and conclude the film and are shown as occasional flashbacks throughout the movie are completely unnecessary and redundant as well.

The best way to enjoy One Night in Bangkok is to switch your brain off and enjoy the movie's action scenes, gloomy atmosphere and diversified settings. While the sound editors and lead actor have done a great job, the director and especially the scriptwriter could have invested some more time into their work. In the end, One night in Bangkok is an overall solid movie but it could have been a notch or two better with some better efforts by those in charge of creating this film.

If you understand that the ultra rich Thais get away with murder, then you will love this film!
dontron-775-8757428 August 2020
If you go on google and look for the son and heir to the Red Bull empire, then you will see he was drunk driving and hit a policeman with his Ferrari, and dragged him 100m down the street. Till this day he has still avoided couts. This movie in many ways gives you a feeling of justice that the Thai courts will never be able to provide. The movie is very well filmed, beautifuy shots of bangkok by night and stays close and true to the Thai culture and corruption.
