The H.G. Wells novel 'The Time Machine', seen in the Episode 1 opening, is on Jimmy's bed side table.
This is the first episode of the series to not feature opening credits as it was edited together with the preceding episode. However, it was shown in Australia (via the Stan streaming service) as a separate episode, and there it did include opening credits, as well as in Ireland and the UK via Netflix.
The contents of Nacho's safe include a pair of Manitoba identification cards, for his father and himself. In episode 1.1 ("Uno"), the home of Tuco's abuelita, where Jimmy and his skateboarding scammers mistakenly end up, is located on Manitoba Drive in Albuquerque.
This episode is called "Carrot and stick" which is a metaphor for the use of a combination of reward and punishment to induce a desired behavior. Jimmy offers the Kettlemans a cash bribe as the "carrot", while Kim threatens blackmail against their current tax scams for the "stick". In this case, the "stick" worked.
