Is There an Ed in the House/An Ed Is Born

Is There an Ed in the House is great. Eddy is unbelievably mean and unsympathetic here, and even though he sent Ed to get beaten up, he did have a point about Sarah pushing Ed around. He doesn't understand why Ed has to care for Sarah. For all of his nastiness, Eddy is a slightly better judge of character than Ed is. The scene where Edd gets angry at Sarah is one of the series' finest moments. And even though Edd didn't want Jimmy's help in the end, it was very sweet on Jimmy's part anyway.

I don't know where to begin with An Ed is Born. Every minute of it is funny. The animation is beautiful. Edd has some fantastic one-liners. There is an underlying sadness about it as we get our biggest glimpse into the true nature of Eddy's brother, through the package sent and some of Eddy's dialogue, without ever appearing onscreen. After his characterisation Is There an Ed in the House, An Ed is Born starts to humanise Eddy again. I love how Edd is not an entirely co-operative cameraman. Camera-boy. Whichever works.

Both these episodes are about sibling relationships and they work really well together. In 'Is There an Ed in the House', Ed wants to care for his sister but is constantly manipulated and bullied by her, and in 'An Ed is Born' Eddy wants to step out from beneath his brother's shadow. There are times when Edd is lucky to be an only child...
