The Resort: Mediocre with a side of awful

Plot

Four friends head to Hawaii to investigate reports of a haunting at an abandoned resort in hopes of finding the infamous Half-Faced Girl. When they arrive, they soon learn you should be careful what you wish for.

Cast

Unfamiliar with anybody involved.

Verdict

Obnoxious 20 somethings celebrate a birthday by going somewhere they shouldn't, why is this such a remarkably common plot? Anyway standing at just 75 minutes it's a swift tale, full of talking, and travelling and then when the action kicks off it's over before you can say "Has it started yet?".

But even then I didn't hate it, parts had been competent as had the character development but what ruins it are the closing moments which unfortunately involve a twist I'd called within the first quarter of the film.

The final moment is so bad and so cliched It flatlined any hope The Resort had of being memorable, entertaining or standing out from the crowd.

Rants

Why do they keep doing that "Twist" I mean I'm not going to spoil it here but I'm so very very tired of it. It makes up an alarmingly high percentage of horror films, you'll see it coming and I've off the top of my head not known a single instance where it actually works! It's one of those twists that horror filmmakers seem to tack on because they can't think of a decent ending. Enough already, you know what I'm talking about just stop it.

You have your 10, the shallow blond, the scrawny cynic as the jack, the smart driven girl as the queen, the sensitive buff guy as the king and the ace, the infamous half faced girl, all of the mediocrity suit. The hand checks all the boxes. Guess what happens. Exactly. Guess in which order they exit stage left. You're spot on. Guess the ending. You're on fire today. Granted there are only three horror plots; what makes or breaks a horror is everything but the story, and on those fronts this movie proves as flat as the beer you left on the kitchen counter overnight. Not recommended for consumption.

More Things Wrong than Right in this Movie

There are so many things that baffled me in this movie. Normal people wouldn't make the same choices the characters did. Three friends (Chris, Bree, & Sam) plan a birthday trip to Hawaii for their mutual friend, Lex. She believed in ghosts and all things afterlife, so they arranged for an exploration of a haunted resort. It was closed and deserted after numerous supernatural occurrences. Things start off slow and boring, as they take in the scenery. Then one by one, the ghost (half face girl) of the island starts killing them off. Once each friend in dead, they return to help kill the remaining friends. Apparently, the ghost controls them after death. The ending confused me for a minute until I realized that the final living friend (Lex) actually died. We are made to believe she was rescued, but it was the ghost playing tricks on her.

Here are the things that baffled me.

1) Lex was the only one of the group who was apprehensive about not staying on the resort path and detouring to do other things. She was hesitant to explore. But then all of a sudden, when it's time to meet the boat to leave the island, Lex is the one holding the group up. She wants to stay longer and take pictures for her next book. She even makes everyone go back inside the resort because she left her bag. What? How and why did she go from cautious to stupid?

2) After they see the ghost, the group runs to the resort gate. They see a security truck and start yelling for help. Chris stops them because he doesn't want to get in trouble for being at the off limits resort. Okay... so he'd rather take on the ghost than risk being fined? Crazy. Then they hear the security guy screaming bloody murder inside the resort. They all run to the truck to leave. Sam and Bree hop in, but once again Chris takes the keys because he doesn't want to steal a truck and get into trouble. Life or death, I think I'd risk it. Although, Bree does die in the truck, so maybe Chris inadvertently gave the rest more time.

3) At one point, the ghost takes over Sam, causing him to attack Chris. Lex has a heavy flashlight in her hand, but instead of hitting Sam with that, she stabs him with scissors...in the jugular. Who would do that? Did she really have to kill him?

4) Sam is walking towards Lex, calling her name. Ya know, after she stabbed him. Oh and after the ghost ripped off his face skin. Anyway, Lex and Chris just stand there. Sam approaches and kills Chris. Then Lex is able to get away in an elevator that literally didn't work one minute before.

5) Finally, Bree starts singing happy birthday to Lex, while creepily lighting a match. Even though Bree is obviously dead, Lex just stands there asking Are you okay, Bree? Ha

Was there anything good?

There were a few minor jump scares and decent gore for a B horror flick. The ghost was adequately scary and reminded me slightly of The Grudge.

Grossly insulting to anyone that values time.

If you value your life you will skip this movie.

First- this needs to be said for "Bro" O'Hurn.

"Even Hot gets boring."- quote Me on this one I've lived through it. Acting classes would greatly increase his chances at a solid career as an actor. Invest in your brand which would be you my guy... SECOND- There is Low Budget and then there is THIS MOVIE.

"Unsane" was shot on an iPhone with the lowest budget possible and it was well received and 10 times better than anything The Resort could be close to.

How are these scripts becoming reality ?

I think the producers are just wealthy and bored. I don't know who would back this creation!

They wanted hot people in their lives and decided to create this for that opportunity. The only logical explanation.

There is nothing to watch. It was poorly written, even worse the directing, the actors were cast on looks.

Not for their believable skills.

It's time to stop producing these types of films "Just because you can con people into investing in your 'Art'.

The plot, the acting, the plot. Save yourself. Some reviews say that the last twenty minutes make this con of a horror movie worth the pain of sitting through the entire film. It was BAD from start to finish. So bad.

Was good at the beginning but they really seemed like they ran out of money in the budget and made the ending trash I had really high hopes for this movie and they threw it in the trash I seen film students make a better movie then this garbage.

A 1 Hour and 15 Movie with 15 Minutes of Horror

I can go on and on about how awful this movie is but let me just leave you with this: At the 15 minute REMAINING mark is when this movie becomes a horror movie and they encounter the 'supernatural'...Please don't waste your time or money.

The only thing scary is the lost of time in your life. Take a 75 minute walk in the wood instead. A squirrel will be more excitement!

Usually I enjoy movies that aren't really up to the public criticisms, but this one was not worth the watch. There was virtually no suspense, and I knew the ending before the story even began thanks to the time padding cop story. The 'villan' wasn't introduced until the last 20 minutes, and even then it didn't have much of a backstory or motive.

You can tell this movie is not going to be good. You can feel it from the trailer, even from the title! Hahahahaha. So expect minimum, expect barely nothing. It's just something to kill time with. It's better than thinking about your life and get depressed. Depression is bad for covid era(so to speak). Then again... Some of you might get depressed by watching this movie so like I said, expect B movie from a B movie. If you don't like B movies at all, stay away. Covid may or may not kill you, but depression... well it also might or might not kill you. Hahahahahaha.

Nope. Nothing redeeming. I wish I would have seen these comments before I watched this. It's not even a good horrible film. I don't think I have ever left a review here before... But if it saves one person from wasting 75 minutes of their life, I'll be happy.

There's bad, and then there's BAD!

I thought this "horror" movie would never get going and I was right. It never did. It bopped along for about an hour and then decided to actually become a horror/ghost story. The last 15 min weren't worth the wait. The ending was exactly what I thought it would be. I think I'll watch Thirteen Ghosts again.

I love bad movies but this is the WORST

What's really frustrating is that I LOVE bad horror movies but this one. Words can't even describe how much I hated this the plot idea was there but the ending omfg what even was that the Quality of this movie is so poor, like oh wow she was still at the resort the hole time but they didn't execute it right, like why tf was her and the half face girl just screaming at each other for one minute especially with the poor CGI. And whenever the dead characters were possed why to did she just look at it with mostly no emotion, like youre friend is literally getting his face ripped off and you're just gonna stand there and watch? And then when that same character was walked toward with his face still visibly ripped off and calling your name ominously you're still just gonna stand there blank expression? I think what made it really disappointing was I had higher hopes for this movie then what I was given cause usually I can tell when it's gonna be a bad scary movie but honestly when I saw it on Hulu I thought it was the one with Lucy Hale in it but that's called Fantasy island apparently. I liked the movie Sharknado more than this movie and that's saying a lot.

Terrible plot. There's a setup of the girl was strangled with her jump rope. Never was there the distant sound of jump roping.

The half faced girl had no meaning. She wasn't trying to find who did this to her. There wasn't a way to free her. There wasn't a point to this movie. It was just a reason for someone to put a bunch of things on film.

Would have been a better movie if maybe they found ledgers of a person who was staying at room 306. Some how tie that in. Have them release the ghost. Maybe even loop back to it being sleep paralysis from their first chats about believing in ghost.

This movie just does everything wrong

The whole end scenes were just out of left field too.

Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Even with fast forwarding about 1/2 the movie it was still unbearably bad and I hate myself for watching it. Yes, it was really that bad. The acting, the writing, ALL OF IT.

Oh Dear the YouTube generation have started making movies...this is some horrible iPhone movie that shouldn't have been made. It's like they've thought "We can make a movie!" Well you can't...flat lighting, soft focus, chromatic aberration, frame rate problems, distorted over level audio, retrospect script, no ambiance....like a movie your friends would make for a laugh. It should have stayed as a drunken idea written on the back of a beermat. There's more to movie making that an iPhone. Please do not waste your time.

This movie had terrible acting, cuts that made no sense and even the Thor wanna be did not make it worth the hour and fifteen minutes of my life that I will never get back.

Scary Island thriller

Had a lot of time on my hands quarantining, and had just watched Fantasy island 2020. So my fiancé and I decided to watch The Resort, sticking with the island theme. The actors are likeable and the script is intelligent, shots are beautiful. Predictably starts to get scary when the cast arrives at the haunted resort, because the main character tells us that's when it's going to happen. I feel like the characters started dying a little too fast, they could have extended the scares another 10-15 minutes before people start dying. The half-faced girl should have been more prominent and with more backstory. The end came way too fast, could have been more realistic, considering the whole hospital scene was a dream, where did the detectives character come from? All the other characters in the movie had a good reason to "turn" in the film, but the detective was really just a figment of the main characters imagination. Nice first feature, Taylor.

This is a movie is a movie is definitely a good movie to put on when you need something to play when you are more interested in being on your laptop or phone. This had NOTHING INTERESTED going on. Even the eye candy was a terrible actor. I'm talking to you mister hair for days. Jesus what a waste of scenery, resources and island appeal. But at least people who needed practice for their VFX got their talent on. That was dope. Other than that. Movie was a 0/10. Acting was a 0/10. Plot was a 0/10.

Seemed to have potential, but lost it

Could have built up to something not bad, but as soon as something good starts its a mad dash to a terrible end. Also. Beware the blue backpack. It is one of the most inconsistent things I've ever seen in a movie.
