A very exciting second episode.
Sleepin_Dragon24 April 2022
Another case of murder for DI Grace, as he tries to track down a killer, who's victims seem attached to the s & m scene.

A very good story, very well acted, superbly produced, suitably macabre, this was a welcome return for DI Grace. Fast paced, action packed, enough to keep you entertained throughout, super climax.

I found this easier to watch than the first episode, maybe that was the macabre story of the opener, or perhaps the characters are now well established.

I'm reminded somewhat of Wire in The Blood, slightly similar tone, and darker than your average crime series. It's another bleak storyline, in the same area as the opener.

I wish there hadn't been such a big gap between the first episode, and this one. There was a fair bit carried over, and I think many, along with me, would have forgotten lots of the details.

A good cast, the main talking point has to be Craig Parkinson, a surprising addition, I am a huge fan of his, is it a little too soon after Line of Duty for him to play a Detective? Time will tell, he was very good though.

8/10.

ITV may have missed a trick here.
Njs201627 April 2022
There's no doubt this series is cast and shot really well. However, ITV by giving the show 2hr slots per book have made it a little too speedy. I'm the era of the box set binge a 2 parter would give the plot time to expose more character and more jeopardy. Maybe it's something they can remedy going forward.

As I said the cast is great. The novels are a really good source but it just needs a longer format.

Looking Good Dead
Prismark1025 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Shades of 8MM. Snuff movies hold a particular fascination for crime writers and filmmakers.

Real life deaths caught on camera. Those agonising screams being real.

Zack Bryce finds a flash drive on a train and witnesses a call girl being killed online.

DSI Grace finds that several dead bodies discovered could be the work of a serial killer. A calling card is left, a scarab beetle.

Only for Grace to discover that the deaths are for entertainment purposes. Thousands are logging in to watch the deaths take place online in the dark web.

Zack Bryce finds himself getting into deeper trouble and the police cannot protect him or his family.

A macabre story entertaining in a grisly way but so full of holes. No one suspects that a police IT expert could be leaking information or there could be using webcam to track people.

DS Potting finds someone who stores loads of acid but does no further checks on the person.

Letdown from wonderful first episode. Too many too-convenient plot twists.
msghall23 May 2021
I had high hopes for this show and this episode isn't bad at all. In fact, it's a tightly wound bit of suspense and drama. But the Amit Shah character makes so many idiotic choices, coupled with the police acting as if they're totally ignorant of modern computers, especially the internet, laptops and cameras, that suspension of disbelief is almost impossible. It would have been easy to write a tighter, more believable script but it looks like corners have been cut. Either that, or the writers of this show are not as skilled as I would have hoped.

Better than the first one for me

Warning: Spoilers
I haven't read this book (read the first one before watching the pilot and didn't feel the urge to continue the series - don't like the medium guff). But I like John Simm so thought I'd give this second episode a try. On the whole I enjoyed it more than the first.

But it would have been better if well-known bent cop 'Dot' Cottan (Line of Duty) hadn't turned up as extra help. The casting people must be aware of the huge popularity of LoD with a similar audience. Surely there are plenty of other excellent actors out there.

Didn't work for me
musickrev28 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted this episode to be a lot better than it was, and on the face of it it should have been. Good actors, John Simm is always a pleasure, and the supporting cast do well too, but the plot with its snuff videos, dismembered corpses and a mysterious computer mastermind seen in profile in front of a bank of eerily lit screens came across as uninspired and derivative. The dialogue too - way too many policemen saying 'I'm fine' when whacked in the head or outright shot as if what would be considered major injuries were just paper cuts. An ordinary bathtub full of industrial strength sulphuric acid? At least in 'Breaking Bad', the scriptwriters had the sense to realize such a thing would likely dissolve its way through the floor. Not too mention the fumes would fill a house and be completely obvious on opening the front door. It was touches like this that broke the suspense and prevented the story from gelling. Hopefully the series if it continues will pick up again. The cinematography is excellent with lots of well crafted scenes in Brighton and the surrounding area.

Death by entertainment!
bosporan25 April 2022
Ridiculous story with a hint of salacious titillation, riddled with magic plot holes stretching credulity to breaking. Outrageously overdrawn characters sitting around earnestly dumping exposition and opaque gobbledy gook onto one another.

The cast is strong, yet the acting is generally weak and even John Simm cannot elevate it from the gutter. It should be halved in duration, which might make it watchable enough for me to care about these characters.

Overall a terrible episode, but better than the first!

Not for me.

To me, deviant sex and dismembered bodies do not constitute entertainment. After 15 minutes I turned it off.

Casting ethnic characters by virtue of positive discrimination is still racism.

Annoying
rctechy422 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Are British cops this dumb. Why do they think criminals respect a badge. British cop shows can be so annoying without, where are the guns??

Lady walk out and pulls out her budge to a criminal who just runs her ever.

A detective runs straight into gun fire - what a joke.

I'm done with this show after episode 2.

Puzzled

Can someone please explain the ferry "suicide" as it makes no sense to me how they discover some other name was used to disembark? I know they check the names of passengers getting on but they don't at the other end and the person involved could not have boarded twice under different names.
