I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't.

As big fan of Oswalt and his stand up, I was waiting for this special like a kid Christmas. However, even after watching it twice, I couldn't name a single joke from it, because they are quite forgettable. I don't think I had one proper belly laugh, unlike I usually do with Oswalt. Maybe a couple of chuckles, tops. The special just was a bit...meh. Not the quirky, funny and unexpected material I'm used to expect.

And the Rubin set? Wtf did I just see? It was so weird and loud, I couldn't even finish it. Did some AWOL patient from the local loony bin just happen to wander off and bump into a live microphone? It genuinely sounded like the ramblings of a mental institute resident. The set wasn't Oswalt's in all fairness, but his decision to pair it with his special seems questionable, to say the least.

Solid one.

The hate and most of the negative reviews are mainly due to Patton admittedly being anti-Trump and have little to do with his act. To give you an example: if you read a review criticizing his act by saying his style, delivery and sense of humor is a bit too similar to Dave Attell's... that's a point of thought you might want to pay attention to. The rest of the bad reviews where the main argument is about Patton being a meanie to the orange man... That's not really adding anything to the conversation. Browse through the user reviews on the net and you'll see which is openly biased and which is reasonably helpful. If you're into Patton's delivery, you're going to enjoy this more than his previous specials. It's Patton's best and is cleverly thought through with a lot of effort put into it, yet for me it was just OK. For a day without my girlfriend to kill time, it was decent. I'm definitely not going to re-watch it every now and then like specials from Louis CK, Burr, Chappelle or Rogan.

Sorry

Some of this was funny, not pee your pants but laugh quietly funny. At no point was I laughing out loud, I did not think the Jesus bit was funny and not because i was offended ( I was not) it just was not funny. They only bit that was really close to laugh out loud funny was the Denny's bit. When I say laugh out loud I mean I'm at home watching from my couch and I laugh so loud they here me in the other room and come out to see what is so funny. I will not tell others about this but if they will ask I will tell them it is mildly funny and a decent way to waste an hour on a bored night at home.

Patton might be able to, but are you?

Of course Patton Oswalt does not everything. Anyone who has seen his tweets or appearances, know that he is not a fan of Donald Trump for example. And I'm not going down that rabbit hole and he somehow avoids it too to a degree. It's almost impossible doing contemporary comedy and not even mention him or the status he has achieved.

But back to this, because as said he this special is not about Trump, it's about observations of Mr. Oswalt. Now you may find them funny or you may find them annoying. Another reviewer said he wanted to like it, but couldn't. And that's more than fair enough. While some will think this is the funniest thing they've seen, others will either fast forward or curse after its over. It's good we have different tastes - not just in comedy. And the special that followed this or was attached to it, was something I couldn't bear to watch. I thought it waas quite annoying - a different comedian, with a twist in his "comeback" performance. So watch the trailer, get an impression of what this is and decide if its worthyour time

Watchable

Not hilarious but some parts are good. Never seen his comic stand-up so was not expecting anything. With some bits laughable others boring, not a 100% enjoyable but pretty decent compared to other recent Netflix standups by Chris D'Elia or Pete Davidson which were flop and disaster respectively.

Stick to acting
saltcoatston25 May 2020
This had some mildly amusing anecdotes but he's far funnier on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Most of them went on for far too long, brevity is important in telling stories which don't have a hilarious punchline.

Stick to the screen, loads better standup shows on Netflix.

Just OK

Warning: Spoilers
Love Patton Oswalt but he has done better. I'm glad I listened but not one that I would want to replay more than once. The story about the note his wife left on your car took a long time and wasn't really funny and others things as well. Also attaching Bob Rubin to your Netflix special just brought down the quality of your comedy.

Unbelievably boring.

Warning: Spoilers
I like Patton Oswalt's comedy and therefore I was dissappointed to find out that there wasn't much comedy in this special. A little harsh maybe, but I found it really boring. The bits seemed underwritten, except for the last bit, which he for some reason teases at, at the beginning of the special. It was probably the best bit, but it wasn't really "teaseworthy" (sorry, not an English native speaker, so I couldn't find a better word. Or a real word). It wasn't a major turning point in the show or anything. This special was just underwhelming to me, especially because his last one "Annihilation" was so good and funny. I hope he does better next time.

Desperation equals forced laughs
buzzknutson3 June 2020
I'd like to start by saying I have enjoyed Patton Oswalt's stand up in the past but this special just didn't resonate with me at all. It started ok but quickly fell apart. Even Patton himself predicts that the audience will have to fake it later in the show. At times is feels like he abandons scripted jokes for other bits because the first wasn't getting laughs. This gives the special a confusing feel to it as Patton rambles on about nonsense for most of the show. It just isn't good and pity laughs help no one.

Male version of a Karen!!
solrac_inc26 May 2020
This guy was only funny on King of Queens. And only because the insults thrown at him were true. His delivery is so cringe and desperate. He's really trying to make himself controversial but comes across like a lonely nerd when his parents ain't around. Pass.

Sad
prplrhd19 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Like the reviewers here who summarily dismiss all bad reviews Of Patton as politically motivated, I sad to see Patton result to tearing down others in pursuit of comedy. I get some don't understand addiction and when confronted with it and may still find laughing at the expense of their torment acceptable. Those who suffer from sex addiction those who work with and love them certainly won't defend their actions when they harm others, anymore than it's ok to excuse drunk driving that harms others. But we are long past laughing at jokes at their expense. The jokes here about the homeless and the poor are just beyond understanding anymore and I'm left wondering why after Patton's painful recent life experiences where he admits his own risks of addiction watching his wife succumb to a secret drug addiction, he finds joy in laughing at the pain of others. He sure as hell isn't laughing with them. What exactly does he love again?

A bit disappointed
I liked earlier material by Oswalt but this special just feels like an attempt at scoring woke points or something he had to pump out in a rush to fill his bank account. Nothing is really inspired, there is no general theme connecting the bits leading to a payoff at the end and the tired old "orange man bad" skit is obligatory, as the #MeToo endorsement. It all just feels a bit forced while not delivering any laughs except the jab at Louis CK which I thought was the only "blow-air-out-my-nose-louder-than-usual" funny part. Pass this one unless you're a hardcore Oswalt fan.

Just not funny
leerevell-6954928 November 2020
Some comedians just have it on stage, this guy just doesn't! His jokes were just not funny and he is so false he had to keep laughing at himself. At one stage I think somebody paid the audience to clap as it was that bad. Clearly had Joe Bidens friends in as not one of the 70M Trump supporters were in the Audience.

Patton Oswalt (Comedian?. I don't think so)
stsman-131 May 2020
I used to think Ray Romano and Kevin James were bad until I watched a couple of Oswalt attempts at being funny. Wow is he at the top of the heap for being unwatchable. Stand up comedy in this country is laughable (not ha ha laughable but just a big joke at being funny)
