Benjamin Ree’s gamer documentary Ibelin led the winners at Tromso International Film Festival (TIFF) on Saturday, January 20; after Norwegian feature Grandmonster took the Fiction Norway pitching prize last week.
Ibelin took the audience award, playing at Tromso the day after its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival. The Norwegian title follows the story of Mats Steen, a gamer who died of a degenerative muscular disease aged 25; after which his parents began to receive messages from online friends around the world. Netflix acquired US distribution and worldwide streaming rights on the title following its Sundance premiere.

Hey everyone! Before we bid adieu to the year 2021, we have one last batch of home media releases on the horizon this week, including two great Sundance films—Mayday and Knocking—and one of my favorite movie discoveries of the last few years, Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eyes, which is getting a Blu-ray from Twilight Time. Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 28th include Venom (1971) aka The Legend of the Spider Forest, The Cropsey Incident, Bigfoot Creek, and Red Snow.
Bigfoot Creek
The world has moved on, but he's still out there. Since the 1970s he has roamed the countryside, watching...and waiting. He has been sighted several times over the last few decades and this all-new docudrama chronicles these true events that occurred throughout the Midwest. Featuring interviews and locations from the real encounters.

Ahead of its DVD, VOD, and digital release on December 28th from 4Digital Media, we have an exclusive look at the vampire horror/comedy Red Snow:
"When an injured bat transforms into a handsome vampire, struggling horror novelist Olivia Romo hides him in her garage to protect him from a vampire hunter. Besotted by the creature, she feeds him animal blood, but any chance of romance is soon thwarted when a gang of fellow bloodsuckers invade her home in search of their missing friend."
Written/Directed by Sean Nichols Lynch and produced by Alrik Bursell, Red Snow stars Dennice Cisneros, Nico Bellamy, and Laura Kennon. In the exclusive clip below, "struggling novelist Olivia Romero (Dennice Cisneros) and her new vampire boy toy Luke (Nico Bellamy) get an unexpected visit from a vampire hunter (Vernon Wells)."

Christmas horror films take many forms. They may be playful like Red Snow or Better Watch Out; gory like Red Christmas or Black Christmas; psychological like Await Further Instructions or outright apocalyptic like The Children – and yet in terms of pure horror, none of them has come close to Camille Griffin’s Silent Night, which plays out like a high spirited seasonal version of Threads.
Like Threads, the horror here is powerful in large part because it is real. Simplified and speeded up, yes, but present in the world today, and all the more pertinent to the younger generation. Whilst Mick Jackson’s film addressed the threat of nuclear war, Griffin takes on that of climate change. The premise of the piece is that a toxic cloud is travelling around the world as a consequence of global warming, and that everyone who comes into contact with it dies. The government.

Nico Bellamy and Dennice Cisneros in Red Snow Photo: 26th Ave Films
The story of a would-be vampire fantasy novelist who unexpectedly finds herself playing host to a real vampire, Red Snow is a romcom of sorts with a distinctly higher than usual quotient of blood and gore. It centres on an ebullient performance by Dennice Cisneros, as Olivia, with Nico Bellamy as the undead Luke who arrives in the form of a wounded bat and depends on her for help, yet struggles to see her as more than just food. It was part of the 2021 Frightfest line-up and is now enjoying a December release in the UK and Eire – fitting because it is, amongst other things, a Christmas film. When director Sean Nichols Lynch and I meet up to discuss it, I begin by asking if he’s excited about joining the canon of alternative seasonal fare.

Happy (almost) December, everyone! While the holidays may be underway, that doesn’t mean horror is taking a break, as we have a lot of great genre movies headed to VOD, Digital, and On Demand over the next few weeks. Things kick off tomorrow with The Last Matinee on Arrow (this writer enjoyed it immensely) and throughout December, films like Dune (2021), Antlers, and Halloween Kills (with extra footage) will be headed to the small screen along with a ton of indie horror, including Silent Night, The Advent Calendar, Agnes, Benedetta from Paul Verhoeven, and Red Snow. Also, Joe Bob and Darcy return to Shudder on December 17th for an all-new holiday special.
Happy Streaming and Happy Holidays!
The Last Matinee (Arrow) - Exclusively on Arrow December 1st

Over the Christmas period, vampire romance novelist Olivia, saves a bat from death after it flies into her house. This was no ordinary bat though and she soon finds herself trying to fend off real-life vampires…
Anyone that has read more than a handful of my reviews or read a review or article of mine in November or December will know that I love Christmas and therefore of course, Christmas movies. I’m instantly drawn to any new Christmas horror hoping it will be more like Michael Dougherty’s Krampus and not one of the dozens of other straight to DVD Krampus movies.
I will get one of my main issues with Red Snow out of the way first. Unless I am mistaken there seems to be know reason for this movie to be set at Christmas.
