‘Rrr’, ‘Kantara’, ‘Sita Ramam’, ‘Kgf: Chapter 2’ steal thunder at Siima
Image
The South Indian International Movie Awards (Siima) have concluded, and films ‘Rrr’, ‘Sita Ramam’, ‘777 Charlie’, ‘Kantara’ and ‘Kgf: Chapter 2’ stole the thunder. The award shows ran from September 15-16 in Dubai, with the first night announcing winners in the Telugu and Kannada categories and the second for Tamil and Malayalam. For the unversed, Siima stands to honour the artistry of South Indian cinema in all the four languages: Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, as well as provide a platform for South Indian cinemas to get more international reception.

South cinema began making some headway into the international markets such as Japan, South Korea, China, Russia, Indonesia and Turkey, primarily due to the charm of superstar Rajinikanth as early as the ‘90s.

Though it only made some major inroads in 2015, with director S.S. Rajamouli’s Telugu epic franchise, ‘Baahubali’, and then exploded with ‘Rrr’ in 2022, giving it full attention in the West.

Bollywood’s triple crisis: No bankable stars, no original scripts, overpriced market
Image
Bollywood is facing an existential crisis it has never experienced in its lifetime. In a country where the top-end model of the Mahindra XUV700 has a waiting period extending up to February 2024, and the most recent date for a U.S. visa interview is some time in June 2024, you can just walk into a Hindi film screening anytime, anywhere, because no one’s watching what’s coming out of Bollywood.

With a loaded release calendar, starting with the VFX-heavy ‘Brahmastra’ and going up to Shah Rukh Khan’s much-anticipated ‘Jawan’ and the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Tiger 3’, riding on its broke back, Bollywood is facing the double whammy of its established stars all seeming to be well past their sell-by date and its scriptwriters appearing to be completely out of touch with the paradigm shift in consumer preferences.

With Aamir Khan tanking, Akshay Kumar delivering 3rd dud, B’wood stares at an abyss
Image
After disaster struck the two Independence Day long weekend releases — Aamir Khan’s long-awaited, mega-hyped ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Raksha Bandhan’ — a wag commented that Bollywood has become like the Congress: it has only its past to live on and stares at a dim future, unless a miracle happens.

For Aamir, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has been his worst commercially since his 2000 film ‘Mela’, despite getting a five-day holiday weekend, starting with Raksha Bandhan on August 11 and ending with Independence Day. And it has been his second successive flop after the ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, which bombed despite the additional presence of Amitabh Bachchan.

For Akshay Kumar, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ has been his third successive dud — starting with ‘Bachchan Pandey’, which got wiped out by ‘The Kashmir Files’, and ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, despite the film being endorsed by the Bjp top brass and made tax-free in three states.

'It's Kannada, not Kannad': Kiccha Sudeep corrects interviewer
Sudeep in Makkhi (2012)

Tnm StaffInstagram// Kichcha Sudeep A clip of actor Kichcha Sudeep correcting a journalist’s pronunciation of the word Kannada, has gone viral online. Vikrant Rona review: Kichcha Sudeep’s thriller is well-packaged yet disappointing
Image
ReviewVikrant Rona has been marketed as an “action adventure fantasy” film — but strangely, it doesn’t fall into any of the three genres.Sowmya RajendranFacebookA car breaks down in the middle of a forest. A child wearing a clown mask is abducted and killed. The opening sequence of Anup Bhandari’s Vikrant Rona promises old-fashioned chills accentuated by superior visual effects and a background score that regularly jolts you out of your seat just as you’re getting too comfortable with your popcorn. Vikrant Rona has been marketed as an “action adventure fantasy” film. That’s three genres, but strangely, it doesn’t fall into any of them. The film is about a fictional village called Kamarottu where several children have been murdered, and the inspector investigating the case is also killed and dumped into a well. Is there a supernatural reason behind the murders or is there a serial killer in the village?...
