A spoof that never should have been filmed
Leofwine_draca14 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
SUMMER CAMP MASSACRE is another dreadful indie comedy/horror from the Caesar and Otto team, who also made the equally dreadful DEADLY XMAS. This one's an open spoof of the 1980s-era slasher movie, with a summer camp assailed by a deadly killer, but it plays out as a woefully unfunny comedy without a single laugh. Instead we get unending tedium, an opening sequence of graphic human butchery, bumbling woodland nonsense, and some terrible acting.

Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre (2009)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

Caesar (Dave Campfield) and Otto (Paul Chomicki) are brothers who find themselves on the run from the law. They end up getting jobs as summer camp councilors but before long the group are being brutally murdered one by one.

CAESAR AND OTTO'S SUMMER CAMP MASSACRE isn't a very good movie but it's at least mildly entertaining if you're into these types of low-budget horror movies. In reality, the main reason people are going to be checking this out is that it does feature some famous faces in supporting roles. This includes Brinke Stevens and Joe Estevez who appear in a couple scenes each. The other big draw to the movie is Felissa Rose who of course played Angela in the original SLEEPAWAY CAMP.

There are a lot of nods or jokes aimed at Rose and SLEEPAWAY CAMP and there's no question that she's the main draw to the picture. If you're a fan of that movie then you'll enjoy seeing what Rose has to offer here. As far as the rest of the film goes, well, it's really not totally awful but there's no question that it runs out of gas around the forty-minute mark. This thing clocks in at just 74-minutes and that drags so badly. I mean, I really can't recall too many movies with such a short running time that felt so long! The humor in the film is rather obnoxious and it's certainly hit and miss. I'm not going to lie, I laughed at some of it and I enjoyed seeing the famous faces but there's not much else here. The horror elements are all on target but a little bit more blood or sleaze would have helped keep the film moving.

Just awful

I am willing to bet that any positive comment was posted by someone involved in the filming of this crap. Skip this "movie" at all costs. The only kind of person that would find this amusing is brain dead due to too much drug usage.

Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre: Well that was a surprise
Platypuschow1 September 2017
Sometimes you come across these movies that you expect the worst of but actually blow your expectations out of the water, this is one of those films.

Reminding me greatly of Tucker & Dale vs Evil (2010) this odd little comedy horror makes up for it's lack of budget with fantastic writing.

Genuinely funny with quick fire jokes and entertaining characters I immediately found myself warming to our two leads.

This right here is evidence that a budget does not make a movie, all you need is a bit of talent both in front and behind the camera and you can make magic.

Caesar & Otto a pair of misfit brothers take jobs as camp councillors but a serial killer is on the loose and people start getting picked off one by one.

Truly funny stuff, I can't believe this actually has a few sequels/spin offs and can't wait to watch them.

The Good:

Back to back jokes which mostly hit their mark

Excellent lead characters

Very well written

Quirky, charming vibe

Brinke Stevens

The Bad:

Felissa Rose, this girl is just terrible

Things I learnt from this movie: That I can still be surprised by these tiny little indie films

If someone upsets you just jump out of the moving car, that'll show em!

Funnier Comedy Team Than 3 Stooges (2012) !
guestar5716 September 2011
Starring: Joe Estevez, Felissa Rose and Brinke Stevens.

This reminded me of those 'Don Knotts & Tim Conway' comedies of the '80 s,Well its more like Chuck McCann and Don Knotts style of fun on film.

The cameos are spread out and a lot of fun,We remember a time,When b-movie cameos were wasted in VCR fodder; Not anymore Joe Estevez again in a month has some very funny lines and Felissa Rose & Brinke Stevens have a lot of stuff to convey to their audience.

The plot of script is very clever and has a lot of jokes about Charlie Sheen, Sleepaway Camp, and Gore Humor,Yeah, Gore Humor.

There is hints this two fellows are going to make a series of horror-comedies,Please Do,We say.

Now,You're probably not going Camping,Counseling or seeing 3D after this C & O effort,Anytime soon or email us as a dare completed, IF YOU CAN !!!

I've got a bad feeling about these counselors...
StevePulaski28 December 2011
In a wasteland filled with lame remakes, horrible CGI messes, and Direct-to-DVD films that fail to impress, here is a perfectly acceptable low budget horror/comedy introducing two buddies that just might become the new talk of the horror community. Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre is bloody, delightful, and bloody delightful in its efforts to create a fun ride through the formula of slashers while at the same time mocking them.

Yes, this is another horror/comedy film. And no, it's not as good as Scream as one would expect. It's nothing incredibly unique or new, but it stands better and stronger than other low budget horror films I've seen such as Albino Farm and Killer Bees. This reminds me greatly of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, another horror/comedy flick I saw, for a number of reasons. Both feature two buddies; one "smart," the other slow and not a big ladies man, in a desolate, woodsy area away from all civilization and are both involved in one deadly predicament. At the same time, both films have fun pointing out the clichés and predictability in other horror films.

This one is fairly basic. Caesar and Otto (Campfield and Chomicki) are two half-brothers. Caesar is flamboyant and openly egotistic and Otto is goofy but charming. One day, when taxiing a pregnant woman to the hospital, Caesar unwillingly instigates a mentally handicapped person who just so happens to be the son of a police officer. To avoid trouble, both of the brothers scram out to the woods where they apply to be camp counselors till the whole thing blows over.

Need I say anymore? Once a mysterious woman named Carrie, played by the horror icon Felissa Rose, shows up at camp counselors begin to disappear and be found hacked to bits in the woods. Just by saying that, it's clear that this is paying homage to Friday the 13th by giving us a familiar setting and plot. But that's okay. All the counselors at least have some distinction and aren't all the same person. So at least we can say the film cares about the characters.

Horror fans will have a good time recognizing the faces of not only Felissa Rose, but Brinke Stevens, another famous horror actress. Not to mention cameos from CKY band-member Deron Miller and Martin Sheen's own brother Joe Estevez.

There are so many shots of the woodsy scenery in the film that it actually took me back to when my friend and I made our short film together, shooting some scenes in the middle of the woods. I love the setting of the woods, and feel it's utilized best in low budget pictures. It gives it a more authentic and realistic appearance rather than showing it in a multi-million dollar film. Usually if it is included in a film with a high budget, it doesn't serve much of a purpose. It's more about the events taking place than the unsettling scenery. Unless you travel back to the seventies and the eighties, the woods setting is just used as a backdrop. Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre reminds us that it has more use than that of a postcard.

So it's clear that Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre is a mixture of genre satire and homage as well as being a study on two eclectic brothers. Though the film is funny and cute, it gets a little heavy-handed with the homosexual jokes. Frequently, we get the easy punches, but it manages to re-cooperate more around the third act.

Going back to my reference to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, let's not forget the best thing of all about both films; good old practical effects. Not a sign of CGI. All the gizzards and intestines are in bright red colors, real fake blood, and none of the digital breed. There's nothing worse than watching a good horror film than realizing that the effects are in appalling CG. It's nice to see true, Troma-style filmmaking still exists. You just have to look harder for it.

At the end of the film, it firmly tells you another is on the way. We're told that Caesar and Otto's Deadly XMas is coming soon. From what I've read, it will feature Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman and most of the cast from this film as well which is all perfectly fine with me. Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre only scratches the surface of what these characters can do in a full-length film. Perhaps a "deadly Xmas" is necessary.

Starring: Dave Campfield, Paul Chomicki, Felissa Rose, Deron Miller, Joe Estevez, and Brinke Stevens. Directed by: Dave Campfield.

i love these guys .....
godinamachine3 September 2022
HEY EVERYBODY ITS ME, (4) !!! And today we review .... a movie im not actually going to make fun of because its good .... "Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre" from 2009 ... i own their christmas movie and when i first got it i thought " oh no here we go another cheap garbage film made by some nobodies" but wow was i never more glad to be wrong ...and even MORE glad to find out that these two had a franchise of films ..... sadly they have NOT gotten the recognition they seriously deserve for it ......

as per usual these 2 find themselves in the middle of zany adventure while trying to survive yet another day in the life of caesar and otto .... and of course ...doom and death follows them .... and as per usual their classic horror cast from the past is included ......this time at summer camp lol..... and it has of course references to sleepaway camp as would be expected .... the acting here is campy (no pun intended) and cheesy BUT its supposed to be , these films are meant to be comedy horror .... not something to be taken seriously .... the camera work is pretty solid the sound is good ... over all the film work is on par or better than most would expect .... the surprising thing about these films has been the better than you would expect over all look of the film ... alot of low budget or indie films tend to fail in sound or lighting or whatever BUT these guys REALLY keep it together throughout and i appreciate and respect that ....

the caesar / otto characters are fantastic and together light up the screen as half brothers always dealing with supernatural situations

the horror comedy genre has the more known figure heads sure like "ash" but these films are tragically underrated and NEED to be seen by the masses more .... i honestly believe that people are missing out here .. and thats coming from a guy who owns literally every horror film made from around the world ....no ...im not kidding ......yes i do need a life .... but like tucker and dale needed a sequel .... these guys HAVE the films to back it up .... and i hope they get the credit they rightfully deserve ..... on a massive MASSIVE scale .......

based off my scale for indie films this gets an easy 9/10 ,

its fun, funny and knows what it is and supposed to be .... so its a solid film ..haters can hate but you obviously dont know whats its like to make a film , write, direct or probably even care about passion of the art at all .... so ... keep hating , at least these guys will be remembered for something ......

Summer Camp Massacre
DarylJGittings4 February 2024
Taxi driver and bit actor, Caesar lives with his brother Otto. After a road rage incident at work involving the local police chiefs mentally handicapped brother Caesar gets fired and decides to skip town before the police chief gets a hold of him. He and his brother Otto hit the road and decide to stop once they can find jobs. They are able to find jobs as counselors at a summer camp. All of the counselors seem to be pretty odd. Summer Camp Massacre features horror icons Brinke Stevens and Felissa Rose. There are multiple inside jokes that pay tribute to "Sleepaway Camp", one of Felissa Rose's most popular films. Summer Camp Massacre is a mix of horror and humor.
