Originally the movie was to be shot in black and white, not only to mitigate shooting in low lighting, but to induce German expressionism. Ultimately it was shot in color as a neo noir.
Director Andrew D. Pringle had no desire to play a lead or a major role in the cast. However, while not wanting delays if the lead should fall through, he also felt he could demand more from himself including late hours, reshoots, and difficult even uncomfortable scenes.
The score was composed while shooting which helped inspire both acting and cinematography to form. However, a final soundtrack wouldn't be finalized until production was wrapped.
Most of the film was shot as a silent picture and sound was later mixed. The apartment and sets were constantly filled with noise and floor creaks with every footstep.
To give Ren a sulken, depressed appearance, Andrew maintained a maximum weight of 155lbs (70.3kg) during shooting.
