Unique concept
srkjn28 March 2020
No doubt it's a feel good movie. But somewhere it was lacking a bit of unstrategic delivery to the audience like you know in the movie like Runaway bride where it felt like everything happened suddenly and not planned. But ya I have never been to any Iranis cafe but now I am definitely gonna make a plan after Quarantine days.

One time watch movie
amit-kittu00728 July 2020
Good story, nice screen play but poor acting of main characters. Manisha was quite good but didn't find good chemistry with other characters.

A powerful concept laid low by suboptimal execution
msunando6 April 2020
Maska (Netflix) - Rumi Irani (Prit Kamani) dreams and aspires to be an actor, but has limited talent. What he does have is a traditional, family owned Parsi cafe in South Mumbai that once boasted of an extensive menu and loyal clientele, which he doesn't think much of. Rustom Cafe is currently managed by his mother, the spunky and fiery Diana Irani (Manisha Koirala), who has been able to run it on a skeletal basis with a limited menu who is waiting for her son to take charge and return the cafe to its original glory.

But Rumi has to realise his dreams at any cost and therefore, brokers a deal to sell off the property to a prominent chain for a price that will fund his launch vehicle into the silver screen. He has magic fingers and invests time and effort into the cafe to rebuild its reputation and win back the clientele with the agenda of convincing his mother to sell it off. She agrees under duress and for the love of her son, but is heartbroken.

Maska had a massive potential of becoming an emotional sojourn sans the melodrama. The premise and build up were also pretty strong, with Manisha Koirala, Prit Kamani and Javed Jaffri creating a perfect stage for telling the story of a turnaround. Unfortunately, director Neeraj Udhwani spends far too long on the prologue and Rumi's dalliance with acting and his love for Mallika (Nikita Dutta). He should have made more efforts to showcase Rumi's disillusionment with his acting career, realization of his culinary and entrepreneurial skills, attachment with the family business, appreciation for his mother's expectations and the development of his love for Persis (Shirley Setia), the girl who is instrumental in turning him around. But all of the above is encapsulated in about 20 minutes which makes it a suboptimal and underwhelming climax, albeit predictable right from the beginning.

But do give Maska a chance, it surely makes for a one time watch and appreciation of the fact that it could have been handled better.

Great movie - just one complain.
ddeeeepp-2950227 March 2020
Who decided to cast Manisha Koirala as Parsi mother? She's a great actress but just doesn't portray this roll well; every time she's on screen trying to say her dialogues in Parsi dialect it's totally off - my mind would just derail.

Shirley shouldn't act
sachchidanandd23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Positives:
  • Concept: I really liked the idea of surrounding the move around generation gap and the typical battle between chasing your dreams vs finding what you are good at. We need more movies like these, instead of typical chase your dream Bollywood style movies.
  • Acting by some actors: I found Prit Kamani a refreshing presence. He knows how to keep the audience captivated and the same time, puts himself in different situations pretty well. Manish Koirala again proves herself as why she is one of the finest actresses rom 90s. Her screen presence made me miss my mom and that is a testament to her acting skills.
  • Setup: Really liked the set design for cafe. It feels authentic from all angles, including the customers.

Negatives:
  • Plot: The second half of the film, when the lead has to undergo transformation wasn't convincing at all. It almost felt like some of the moments were forced into the plot. The whole subplot of lead's romance with Shirley Setia was totally unconvincing, which brings me to biggest flaw of the movie.
  • Shirley Setia: She might be a good singer, but as an actress she flopped pretty badly. The garden moment was supposed to high point of the character, but she couldn't bring out the emotions, neither can she bring out her emotions towards Rumi in the bar scene. Please Shirley, go back to singing, you are way better at it.
  • Unnecessary sequences: There is a sequence where Romi goes nude to his audition, that sequence doesn't lead anywhere and feels like a wasted scene and it isn't clear to me what this scene was supposed to prove.

Just like somebody else mentioned, it is a feel good movie, but don't expect this movie to be one of the best movies you have ever watched. For a platform, that gave us drive, this is a still a way better movie to watch.

Read my full review after watching the movie.

The dude doesn't have a grip on his life & like a typical teenager dates an older women and gives her false hope and in the end he leaves her high & dry, her dreams with him are shattered and he doesn't even do a proper apology. Poor women now has to go in tears. I'm so heartbroken for her. While his childhood friend takes him in the middle of the night & though knowing he's got girlfriend develops feeling for him & goes on an emotional rollercoaster about her brother's death!!! I mean who does that at that time. Later talks about loosing her virginity to him and they pose such a good impression on her like good hearted guiding soul and bringing sex here is meaningless. It would've been lot better if they didn't have sex & don't forget she puts him into cheating his girlfriend!?!? Did that director know what he was writing?!?!?! It's killing waiting for the guy to make the right decision & when he did my soul leaned back(RIP) in peace. I liked the part where the guy can't act and chokes & can't understand why he can't act. That's Realist & continues to show how he understands it & realises it and does what his heart wants to do. He does what makes him happy & that's the part we all agree & love. It's not a good movie or bad one either & I almost forgot... This movie made me realise that we need support & take forward our traditional legacy and ppl we need support our ancestors stuff rather than KFC, Pizza Hut.... though I love those am gonna change my direction bcoz as they say they are emotions & stories. Good message btw..

This Maska is too weak
joey-8360931 March 2020
Maska does not live up to the hype that's surrounding it as a feel good movie... the constant overacting of the cast to portray the lifestyle of a Parsi family and it's dialect is quite a poor show... the storytelling is quite weak and let down by the lead actor, couldn't really differentiate between his acting as a bad actor inside the film and the film itself.

Msg. Is good
ravindradv3 May 2020
It's talk about Parsi legacy & how Parsi community become extinct. Follow your instinct & don't go with what people say about you. One good line is -- when he realised when he actually experiencing "confusion" moment.

This is in no way "the best Indian movie" out there smfh
sarabjitsinghisu31 March 2020
Idk why people can't review movies at all on this website. This movie doesn't really have good direction, nor acting, ending was kinda pushed quick.

Overall it's supposed to be a feel-good movie but it's definitely one I would not put on my watch-again movies. Don't trust the 10 star rating reviews; they obviously don't know how to watch movies.

Best Hindi movie on Internet!!!!
iPremRawat27 March 2020
I have never seen such an amazing film since I saw Maska. Maska encompasses friendships, hardships, hopes, and dreams. And what is so great about the movie is that it moves you, it gives you hope.

It is a simple film, yet it has an everlasting message.

khavanu, pivanu, majja ni life (life of eating, drinking & fun)!

Best Performers :- Shirley Setia & Manisha Koirala Amazing Direction. Good Music. Loved it! <3

Sweet
rehmankhilji10 April 2020
Sweet, this explains the movie a lot. Manisha Koirala showing her experience and class. Her expressions and timings are simply superb. I fail to understand why so much negative reviews as its a light and a good movie. Javed Jaffrey comic timings, amazing. Prit Kamani a newbie and acted accordingly. A good watch.

Predictable and bland
dogbert-4572328 March 2020
Other than reviving the memories of Irani cafes to those from Bombay who remember and grew up with them, this film does nothing. The plot is predictable. The pace is excruciatingly slow. The acting is mediocre (with the exception of Manisha Koirala, who nails it!).

Give this one a miss.

Overall one time watch. A movie about a boy chasing his dreams, gets a reality check and enlightenment of doing the right thing. Pretty predictable yet not that boring. Overall one time watch.

Short Review of Maska 🙂
pritypoddar28 March 2020
It's a nice, well made, light drama around a loving mother-son duo for their family legacy, the Rustom Cafe. The mother expects her grown up son to improvise it and bring back it's glory of the old days, while the son is star-eyed and desperate about his Bollywood debut, even ready to sell the cafe to facilitate the same!

Manisha Koirala is fantastic as the loving and lively mother. She lights up the screen in every frame of hers. Prit Kamani, the son looks handsome and convincingly plays the part of a lost Parsi boy. It is his debut movie.

Worst Movie of 2020
sourav-7380030 March 2020
Shirley's acting was boring and the role was so annoying. The main actor, Rumi, is as bad actor as he was showing Rumi as a hero. No life in the whole movie . This is a perfect example of how a movie should not be made.

Light hearted with predictable end
tabishakhyar4 April 2020
The story and the treatment is a light hearted movie with a predictable story. However, I liked the cast especially the fact that they have casted Savi Sidhu who was in news for working as watchmen after having bad days after few good movies under his belt. Watching Shirley in a acting role is delightful. Manisha & Jaaved are veterans in acting...needn't to review their acting.

Pleasant premise. Could have been treated very differently. But for me, lack of filmmaking sense won here. Other than Javed Jaffrey, I couldn't find one good thing about this film.

Bad. So bad.
dog-bird10 April 2020
Was kinda excited to see what I hoped would be a heartwarming story in an Irani cafe setting. The set delivered, and all else failed. The story was bad. The main actors were flaky at best, cringe-inducing at worst. Some of the extras were good though. Watch if you have nothing else to watch, if you like seeing Mumbai at night, and want to lust after bun Maska, of which there weren't enough shots :(

A simple slice of life movie with great performances. The story is predictable but still very enjoyable the way it has been told. It's a simple feel good movie with a heart.
