New York, May 7 (Ians) Quitting smoking early was associated with higher survival rates following a lung cancer diagnosis, according to a study.
The study, led by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, showed that compared to those who never smoked and were being treated for non-small cell lung cancer (Nsclc), current smokers had 68 per cent higher mortality and former smokers had 26 per cent higher mortality.
“Our participants’ smoking histories varied, with some having stopped smoking a few years before their diagnosis and others having stopped several decades before,” said senior author David Christiani, Professor of Environmental Genetics.
“This wide range gave us confidence in our results — that the benefit of pre-diagnosis smoking cessation persists even after lung cancer is diagnosed.”
The study, published online in Jama Network Open, followed 5,594 patients with Nsclc — which accounts for 85 per cent of all lung cancer cases — enrolled between 1992 and 2022. Of these participants,...

Tnght member Lunice has announced his sophomore album, Open, out June 23rd via LuckyMe. As a preview, the Montreal producer has shared the first single, “No Commas,” and its accompanying video.
Open is the follow-up to his 2017 solo debut, Ccclx, and each song on the album was created with the thought of how it would translate to live performances in mind. Collaborators include rappers and producers like Cali Cartier, Zach Zoya, Yuki Dreams Again, DAGr, Jay Centrury, Stargate, and Drtwrk.
Already a staple of Lunice’s live sets, “No Commas” is a slice of twisted, club-ready hip-hop, as Cali Cartier whisper-raps over thumping production punctuated by xylophone. In a statement, Lunice explained the process of making the song.
“This track is the result of multiple natural occurrences where the melody, drums, and vocal performance coincidentally fit with each other in the moment of creation without any prior motive behind it,...

New Delhi, May 4 (Ians) Bivalent vaccines that target the newer Covid variants, particularly Omicron and sub-variants, performed well, according to two studies.
However, primary vaccines showed rapidly waning protection from Sars-CoV-2 infections in the post-Omicron era.
In a study published in the journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases, a team of Japanese researchers measured the effectiveness of bivalent (two-strain) Covid-19 mRNA vaccines against symptomatic infection during the BA.5-dominant period in Japan.
A total of 3,498 positive Covid-19 cases were identified, and BA.5 was estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent to 100 per cent of Sars-CoV-2 infections documented in the study.
This is one of the first studies to measure vaccine effectiveness of newer BA.4/BA.5-containing bivalent vaccines, which were developed in 2022 to target highly transmissible Omicron subvariants.
The study of 6,191 participants showed that the bivalent vaccine was 72 per cent effective against Omicron infection.

Sydney, April 11 (Ians) Weight loss in older adults, particularly among men, is linked to early death, according to a study.
On the other hand, weight gain was not significantly associated with mortality among men.
“The study suggests that weight loss was associated with an increase in mortality, particularly among men, highlighting the need to monitor and investigate weight loss in older adults, Sultana Monira Hussain, from Monash University in Victoria, Australia, along with authors wrote in the paper.
The study looked at nearly 16,523 adults at least 70 years old in Australia and more than 2,000 adults in the US who were at least 65 years old.
The findings, published in Jama Network Open, showed that loss of 5 to 10 per cent of body weight among men was associated with a 33 per cent. Loss of more than 10 per cent of body weight was linked to 289 per cent increase in mortality.

With no new releases coming this weekend in anticipation of the release of “The Batman” on March 4, Sony/Columbia’s “Uncharted” has continued to perform well at the box office with a second weekend total of $23.2 million.
That result is a drop of just 46% from the film’s $44 million 3-day opening last weekend, giving “Uncharted” a 10-day domestic box office total of $83.3 million. While it is expected to see its numbers significantly drop once “The Batman” is released, “Uncharted” has gained a foothold with young, male moviegoers worldwide, with Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman declaring the film a new franchise in an internal memo this past week.
Also holding decently in its second weekend is MGM/FilmNation’s “Dog” with $10.1 million, giving it a 10-day box office total of $30.9 million against a $15 million production budget. As we noted earlier this week on WrapPRO, “Dog” has done a much better job...

When President Joe Biden took the podium on the afternoon of Dec. 21 to address the country amid the massive surge in Covid-19 cases from the highly transmissible Omicron variant, he promised to give it to us straight. But despite providing additional details and updates to his Covid-19 action plan, and making a World War II-era plea to unvaccinated individuals (“Honest to God, I believe it’s your patriotic duty [to get vaccinated]”), he didn’t deliver.

There are lost-at-sea thrillers that make a virtue of the leanness of their narratives. J.C. Chandor’s “All Is Lost,” Wolfgang Fischer’s “Styx” and Chris Kentis’ legitimately traumatizing “Open Water” (not to mention Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” if we switch in space for ocean) all spun gripping tales of survival — or not — using minimal dialogue and very little character backstory. But the pitfalls of this less-is-more approach are laid bare in and stereotypes. In its familiarity, “Submersible” at least appropriately evokes such a sinking feeling.
We’re engulfed in the action immediately, when the film opens, as the rickety, makeshift sub codenamed “Guadalupe” is already mid-crisis. Its crew of three — secretive pseudo-captain Felix (Leynar Gómez), quiet, older engine maintenance guy Kleber (Carlos Valencia) and jittery, crazy-eyed wild card Aquiles (José Restrepo) — scrabble about the squalid, listing interior and decide in desperation to redistribute the weight on board by shifting their precious cargo around.

As the beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) limps ahead with the reforms necessary to mount a real live NBC Golden Globes telecast in January 2023, they’ve finally hired the diversity officer the group promised to bring on board back in May. Neil Phillips, a public speaker and former professional basketball player, has joined the organization in the newly created role.
The HFPA is slowly making strides towards realizing its diversity plan goals, but they are still encountering resistance from publicists who refuse to deliver clients. In the old days, distributors submitted their films, suggesting the categories they preferred (“The Martian” was laughably deemed a comedy) and supplied talent for press conferences exclusive to the Golden Globes. With the live show canceled by NBC and few publicists contributing talent, this year the HFPA is going ahead and announcing their awards anyway, with no TV show or submission requirements. Provocatively, the...

Facebook may be pelted of late by revelations from whistleblowers and damning internal documents made public, but the Mark Zuckerberg co-founded social media giant has decided to draw the line when it comes to the upcoming Doomsday Machine TV series.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Episode 10, “Open and Shut.”]
Back in Episode 4, podcaster extraordinaire Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) not only provided the narration that bookended “The Sting,” but she also teased the ending of “Only Murders in the Building” by flashing “a few months” ahead. The host of “All Is Not Ok in Oklahoma” — the true crime series that first brought together Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) — was suddenly talking about them, only it didn’t make much sense at the time. After quoting a line from “Brazzos” about second chances, not-Sarah-Koenig says, “[it] prophesied what would happen 15 years later, when a fake detective decided to become a real one; when he and his true crime fan buddies took a second chance — and became the subject of our next investigation.”

This Star Trek: Lower Decks review contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 2.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 2
At this point, asking whether or not Lower Decks is “real Star Trek” is nuts. Not only does the series capture the warm and fuzzy Tng-vibe nearly perfectly, it also talks about the meaning of Star Trek, quite a bit. In the Season 2 debut, Lower Decks examined the old Tos trope of a mortal suddenly having “god-like” powers, and looked at what that meant from at least three different ways, in three different storylines. But this week, Lower Decks is being a bit tricker. If we think of each episode of this series as like a treatise on the nature of a certain Star Trek concept, “Kayshon, His Eyes Open,” was all about competing definitions of what it means to be good at your job in Starfleet. And sometimes, when that happens, you end-up meeting your double.
