Slow
staunton-gary4 December 2021
Would like to say that it's a slow burner, but it never really got hotter than lukewarm. The movie was too long and had too many dialog pauses, not much pace at all. If you are totally bored then I'd recommend it, just don't expect Boon (Neal McDonough) to save it, he was supposed to be a A dangerous hitman - I must have missed it.

About Avarage
nebk3 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Red Stone is a run of the mill thriller in which a teenager named Motley Adams (Dash Melrose) witnesses his brother's murder at the hands of the crime boss Jed Haywood (Michael Cudlitz). It turns out his brother stole a Ruby from the crime boss and was also cooperating with the FBI. Soon Motley is beeing pursued by an assassin named Boon (Neal McDonough) as well as a law enforcement agent with whom his brother was cooperating. Boon is not too keen on his new job as it takes place on a day of a family funeral and it seems he is seriously reconsidering his career path at the same time.

Overall Red Stone is a watchable if mostly predictable and slightly forgettable thriller. The acting is mostly decent although there is not much character development especially of secondary characters. Certain events are not very well explained and could have been explored in more depth. A 5 out of 10. Not terrible but not great either.

Seems like they are trying to be camp but it comes across slow and dumb. If you like pure violence... you will be happy. If you are looking for action... the overall story here is lacking.

Neal McDonough deserves better than this.
Top_Dawg_Critic31 December 2021
This was probably one of the worst directed films I've seen in a long time. Novice writer and director Derek Presley also failed miserably in directing his cast, as everyone - except McDonough, seemed lost, bored, and didn't know how to act. He kept filming scenes that should've been ended, with the cast just standing around waiting for him to say "cut". Then you have a convoluted story with random unexplained scenes. What was the entire first 5-10 mins about? Drive up to a bridge, see a car, look around, a phone rings and you leave. Total amateur hour filmmaking. Never mind the ridiculous and easily avoidable plot and technical issues. Then you add the slow as molasses pacing, and the unnecessarily long - and what seemed unedited 97 min runtime, and you'll be pulling your hair out wanting it all to end. Presley should've at least had a seasoned writer fix his screenplay, because with such little substance and too much filler, this may have worked as a short or made-for-TV 1 hour film. Low budget B film or not, inexperienced filmmaker or not, there was no excuse to leave so many easily fixable flaws. I wouldn't even expect such a mess from a 5th grade drama class. The score started off loud and annoying, but either I got used to it, or it simmered down towards the end. This film did have some hope and promise to allow overlooking some flaws, but it just had too many of them, and knowing even a decent editor could've fixed most of them, is inexcusable. It's a very generous 3/10 from me, all going to McDonough who was the only one that did anything to hold up this mess while it was drowning.

Awful

Who makes this stuff?!

Low budget amateur hour effort from people who should have known better.

I just can't believe it.

These people should stick to whatever they were doing before they decided to make movies because they sure don't seem to have the talent for this field.

An absolute embarrassment.

Trying too hard to be a Tarantino style film, it ended up being awfull
Scuffers5 February 2022
OK, the good points:

1) great camera work 2) good music 3) some great actors

the bad points:

A) shockingly poor story B) totally unbelievable characters C) WAY too slow D) simply nothing to get invested in.

How on earth did something this bad every raise the budget to get made?

7 for Cudlitz and McDonough!
jacksonmaze3 April 2022
So found this one along and thought it looked like a modern western and it has one of my favorite actors in Michael Cudlitz - Shout out to Gross Point Blank- McDonough is always fun as a baddie.

POSITIVES; The cinematography was awesome. It was gritty and had a weird red vibe. It was old school with long shots and let the actors act. The sparse action scenes were cool and the f/x were solid and old school. This was definitely a love letter to old gangster films. The acting for the most part was great. Loved the Hutch role. Billy Blare was awesome.

NEGATIVES; It was billed as an action film. An article I saw said it was a western film too. It is not either. There is action in it and it was made in Texas, I think. But it's not a western. It's closer to a dixie mafia type film. Or like Justified without the action.

I didn't like the music. I appreciate what they were doing but it wasn't my favorite.

The film moves slow and that's okay for some people. But I think the way the movie preview made it look, some will think it's more action.

Overall really cool little gangster film. Some gritty moments too.

7/10.

Not good at all

They don't make good movies and they are jealous of the ones who do. Not good and obviously stacked with fake ratings just like the rest. Give it a pass and thank me later.

Solid Guy Pic
TheJonesBones25 April 2022
Your wife might even like this one, too, because it has Neal McDonough in it! Something about him really flips their love muscle!

Sure, the plot has been done - it's the quintessential story about a burnout hitman who grows a conscience and simply cannot kill for hire anymore. In this case, his target is a young man, Dash Melrose as Motley Adams, who does an excellent job in this role - he reminds of a young Patrick Dempsey ("Run"). Michael Cudlitz menaces as Jed Haywood - the boss - while Billy Blair menaces all as Hutch, the loyal psychopath tasked with managing Boon, who is clearly having a "bad day on the job".

I know you won't see this one at the Oscars, but I bet you watch it all the way through once you start it. My advice? Pack a lunch and plan to stay a while - this is a fun ride!

PS - also checkout the sequel, "Boon" - it's even better.

Bloody awful.
bforbrett19 January 2022
Nothing positive to say about this. Slow, terrible acting, annoying unnecessary music, unoriginal plot. Such a shame the ratings on IMDB seem to be untrustworthy these days, this was showing up as 5.6 the day I decided to watch it, barely got halfway through.

A Paid Assassin's Crisis of Conscience
zardoz-1326 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Everybody has a bad day in "Whitetail" writer & director Derek Presley's "Red Stone," a grueling small time crime caper, co-starring Neal McDonough, Michael Cudlitz, and Dash Melrose. Mind you, nobody is ever ready for fate to intervene for good or evil in their lives. Ironically, our hero is a paid assassin, Boon (Neal McDonough of "Walking Tall"), who has obliged his boss too many times. Boon starts his day at a nursing home. He has to change the status of his mom's health care. An affable admin cannot authorize any changes without conferring first with Boon's older brother. Sadly, Boon explains his brother's entire family has died in a tragic car accident. Now, Boon is the sole surviving family member. His Alzheimer's afflicted mom no longer recognizes him. Instead, she thinks Boon is really her milk man from 1956! Boon's cell phone chimes as the admin gushes apologies. The godfather of crime in Navarro County, Texas, Jed Hayward (Michael Cudlitz of "Grosse Pointe Blank"), has urgent business for Boon. Virtually everybody in the county is either on Jed's payroll or benefits from his bribes. This includes Sheriff Quincy (Jason Douglas of "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back"), who is hopelessly in debt to Jed's casinos. Boon tells Jed about his brother's family funeral and pushes for the day off. Nothing doing says Jed who needs him for a delicate job. Reluctantly, Boon bows to Jed's wishes. "Red Stone" covers a lot of ground during its brisk 97 minutes, with its action taking place between early morning and late afternoon. Comparably, Presley's "Red Stone" resembles Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" (1994) because both chronicle the consequences of unsavory criminal conduct. At fadeout, not only do the most sadistic but also the most sympathetic bite the dust in this bullet-riddled melodrama.

"Red Stone" opens as one of Jed's underlings, Danny Adams (Dominic Scott Kay of "Midnight Clear"), has second thoughts about serving as a snitch to FBI Agent, Tanner (Mike Dopud of "Deadpool 2"), at a rendezvous deep in the woods. Meantime, Danny's smarmy teenage brother, Motley (Dash Melrose of "Ida Red"), loses his job as a grocery store worker because he was caught red-handed on video surveillance stealing a six-pack. Motley's boss calls Sheriff Quincy after Motley storms out of his office. Motley doesn't get far before Sheriff Quincy confronts him about the stolen suds. A radio dispatch call curtails their banter, and Quincy is needed elsewhere. Later, Motley is surprised when Danny picks him up out of the blue and warns him they must leave town. Not only has Danny stolen a prized ruby from Jed, but he has also been singing to the Feds like a canary. No sooner has Danny picked up Motley than Hutch (Billy Blair of "Operation Overlord") spots him. Danny hasn't been answering his cell phone, and Hutch forces him to halt. Hurriedly, Danny conceals his little brother beneath blankets in the back seat of his four-door truck. Danny warns Motley to keep quiet. Hutch rides with Danny as they head to Jed's sprawling estate. After they arrive, Jed takes Hutch's seat and chats with Danny. Motley listens fearfully. Suddenly, Jed kills Danny with one shot. Fear paralyzes Motley while Hutch takes Danny's truck to be crushed. Meanwhile, Jed's goons carve Danny up with a chainsaw so his body will fit into a barrel. Soaking Danny's remains with an accelerant, they set it ablaze. Jed wants Boon to find Motley for him, while they watch Danny go up in smoke.

By this time, Motley has stuffed a backpack with essentials, including his father's urn. Danny told him he had stashed the ruby in their father's ashes. Motley encounters Agent Tanner but refuses to cooperate. Later, he changes his mind. Meantime, Boon and Jed have grown irritable toward each other, and the crime boss rankles at Boon's arrogance. Boon misses Motley at Danny's trailer but catches up with him at Paul's house. Paul (Ace Anderson of "Party Hype") was Danny's closest friend. Motley suspects Paul wants the ruby, and they tangle over it. Boon bursts in on them and shoots Paul. Motley escapes and contacts Danny's girlfriend Emily (Alexandria DeBerry of "Fashionista") about his brother and the Bureau. Later, Boon and Hitch abduct Emily and grill her about Danny. Afterward, Hutch blows Emily's head off without blinking, and Boon reprimands him. Eventually, they corner Motley. Hutch's trigger finger starts itching again. Finally, Boon is fed up with Hutch. Boon is finished taking Jed's orders, too. Our hero finds himself at a mental crossroads, suffering a crisis of conscience, pondering the prospect of turning over a new leaf, though it may be too late.

Writer & director Derek Presley has penned a violent crime thriller about one man's decision to go his own way rather than blindly accommodate others. You'll find few loose ends in this abrasive, character-driven melodrama. Neal McDonough stands out in a largely unknown cast, while Michael Cudlitz makes a hopelessly reptilian villain. Strong performances, sturdy characters, and dire predicaments highlight Presley's slowly-paced, low-budget B-movie. The ironic ending to "Red Stone" may bug some spectators, but this engrossing melodrama qualifies as a better film than you might imagine.

A film about persaonal crisis
jmrecillas-8343519 January 2022
I guess all those folks complaint about the slow pace of the movie are that kind of moronic audience that expect running car chases and gun fight all over the place, some slow budget version of Die Hard or The Dukes of Hazard, so they don't look and ask for what happens in the film. Is good to see an American film that escapes of that cinematic non-sense violencewich all the time presents on every film.

The film is on the surface a film of criminal chasing a witness. I guess that explains that negative reaction of some morons. Well, thewy have to deal with that, and move on to the next chasing-cars-and-shooting-firearms piece of crap film.

At the bottom, the film is about crisis and redemption. Crisis of the legal sistem and corrupt officials, familiar crisis of the several characters involved: Boon (Neil McDonough) has lost his mother and nevertheless he has to pursue a witness, Motley Adams (Dash Melrose), who not only saw how a mafia lord, Jay Haywood (Michael Cudlitz), kill his brother, Danny Adams (Dominic Scott Kay), but how local Sheriff Quincy (Jason Douglas) is coluded with Haywood, who also has to deal with his new born grandson, and so on.

Yes, is not Road to Perdition, but is a good one flick, and the story has to be the way is told, slow and away from today mainstream violence films of American cinema. If you aren't a moron, you will enjoy this film by what it is, instead of waiting for spectacular car chases and all that ridiculous and unbelievable stuff Hollywood give to the audiences everytime.

Wannabe John Wick
bohdanascheinostova24 May 2023
I can't stress enough how bored I was watching this film. This wannabe John Wick picture fails in every part of the process of movie-making and that is why I mostly blame the director Derek Presley for the disappointment this film is. Except for Neal McDnough (who is doing what he can to save this picture) every character/actor seems bored, confused and actually bad at acting. Than you have the story itself with many random unexplained scenes and long slow camera shots, which I believe were an attempt at some more "refined" camera work, but felt like the director forgot to say "cut!" instead. Maybe with some editing it could have been salvageable, but as it is I cannot recommend it.

He's angry and he's scared
nogodnomasters20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Danny (Dominic Scott Kay ) stole a ruby from Southern crime boss Jed Haywood (Michael Cudlitz ). Danny paid the ultimate price as his brother Motley (Dash Melrose) witnesses the murder in hiding. The boss hires Boon (Neal McDonough) to hunt down the teen which leaves him with a bad feeling.

Not much of a southern crime drama. There are better ones out there, even the ones with Nicolas Cage.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Another worst film! Too slow, and full of annoying overuse scene! Avoid at all cost!
kwenchow22 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This film with a man "Danny" talking on the phone in the truck, and he hiding a red stone inside an urn scene! As turnout, this film is about a hitman "Boon" need to prevent a young boy "Motley" kill by a crime boss, and he eventually sacrifice by his act! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the smoking scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the arguing scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the drinking scene, overuse of the hiding scene, overuse of the driving scene, overuse of the running scene, and overuse of the talking on the phone scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the action scene have blood at certain point, but overall portray by sideways, and occur in too short of time! Make the film frustrated to watch! At the end, Boon died at the grave after saving Motley! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

Fair to middlin'
signlady1 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was alright for it's genre. Had a few good suspenseful moments. A good story line - again - as far as this sort of movie.

The thing is, a few better cast members would've really taken it up several notches. For example - Gary Busey would've made a great Jed! He could've brought so much more to the character. Also, the Don Johnson look-alike fed guy? Some one like Alec Baldwin would've brought a lot more interest & intensity to that character. I also think the sheriff guy could've had a lot more personality with a better actor.

And of course - the kid - he played his part fine. But a more seasoned young actor could again, bring a whole lot more bc this was all pretty intense. I think the kid was meant to portray 'numbness' but it just didn't play.

I liked the cheezy hutch character. He was pretty good at playing a cheezy schmuck. The brother, Danny was well played too.

I knew no one in this movie except Neal - his character was pretty good - there was a lot of drama and actually a sort of dark humor in his situation with his mom & family deaths.

Except the part where the movie starts - on THE day of his family funerals he discusses moving his mom to a cheaper part of the facility? That part took me out of the possible reality. It could'a been cut bc who would discuss THAT on that day? Plus he would have to bring death certificates, etc - it was just unrealistic. Just sticking with discussing getting his mom ready to go to the funerals would've been fine.

Also - characters kept saying 'funeral' singular when it was 4 funerals he needed to go to. It irked me that no one ever pluralized it.

Also - it irked me that it wasn't brought out to the sheriff or the boy that Emily was dead.

Anyway - a better cast would've made a great thriller. As is, it's middle ground quality for entertainment - besides the fact that 'hit man' drama is low on my personal list of enjoyable genres, it wasn't an altogether wasted movie night.

Watch if you have absolutely NOTHING else to do.
duanejunk-3333218 November 2023
I love Neal as an actor. As a producer, he should have demanded more from the cast & writer/director. Feels like it was rushed to be made & released. Real studios take time to let a project finish properly. Various plot points left my head itching. Most referenced in other reviews.

The one that did me in, right near the end, was when Mot was stuck in the back of the Sheriff's SUV. The sheriff went in to talk with Jeb, leaving Motley alone in the back of the car. Mot tried to escape out the rear doors, but the Sheriff had locked them. There was NO cage in the car. All he had to do was climb over the seats and open a front door. They kept calling Motley "smart" throughout the movie, but couldn't climb over the seats. Dumb kid.

Anyway, if you're a McDonough fan, it's worth a watch. If not, PLEASE watch something else!

Not too bad but not real good
jmw11108513 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought the movie was ok. I liked seeing McDonough and Cudlitz together again, (they were both in Band of Brothers). The supporting cast was good. I think they could have done more to emphasize the close relationship between the two aforementioned actors near the beginning of the movie.

A better director would have spent a little more time building up the drama and tension before some of the shootout scenes.

It was trite and predicable to know that the cop was going to betray the kid.

The actor who played the kid did a good job, much better than his brother in "Boon" the sequel to this movie.

Another problem with the film was that there were shootings and kidnappings in the middle of the town and nobody noticed. The director should have handled that better because that flaw was so obvious.

Straight-up bad!
eferrorfile3 June 2022
Wow, just wow. This movie was a complete waste of time. I was expecting it to slowly build it up for the ending, but NO. Sat through the whole thing, to see... That. Sloppy writing, horribly directed, bad pacing - real amateur hour. Damn shame for McDonough, though. Man can act really well, and at times I saw he tried, but the writing just wasn't there to make it work.

I suggest you skip this one, watch something else.

Love me McDonough as a baddie but even better as a good dude.
andreahill-156794 December 2021
Loved everything about this. Loved McDonough Was it slow paced? Yes.

But that's what i like. It was remeniscent of old crime films that took their time to build. Really cool look. The kid who played the main character was good.

Cudlitz rocked it as a baddie and i wish he did more films.

The cast was solid and I personally loved the cinematography and the music.

If I had one complaint it would be that I thought there would be more action but again, I didn't really care. The story was great and I was definitely on the edge of my seat.

Not bad at all for an indie!

phildutton-775084 December 2021
Neal McDonough and Michael Cudlitz are two of my favorite actors on T. V. I saw them and I watched it and I have to say - I loved this.

It's not an action movie at all. More to it than that. It's got some action in it but it's a character film, and I was really surprised.

The story was simple and to the point, which isn't bad at all. It's the characters.

Really enjoyed it and I hope to see more from these guys.

I wasn't sure what to expect but I have to say it was really good.

Talented group of filmmakers who are making more stuff. I look forward to their next thing. I hope they make more with Abe from Walking dead.

I love McDonugh as well but Cudlitz was so cool in this.

Good gangster/chase kind of movie.
