Our most recent encounter with David Lynch – that renaissance man of all things dark, bizarre and dreamy – was his surreal, confusing and lightly scary music video for Nine Inch Nails' single “Came Back Haunted,” which brought together some of Lynch's earliest creative themes (high-contrast photography, alien textures and horrific, distorted faces) and his more recent obsessions with digital animation. It's no surprise then that Lynch's own musical career, which includes collaborations with a wide assortment of artists, also brings together sounds and themes spanning his entire creative canon. His work with composer Angelo Badalamenti on films like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive is the stuff of legend, and he previously worked with Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor on one of his most disturbing films, Lost Highway (my personal favorite, haters be damned). Over the past decade or so, he's devoted considerably more time to music, setting up his...

Though he’s not likely to release a new film anytime soon, that hasn’t stopped David Lynch from finding a new outlet for his creativity: music. His second solo album, The Big Dream is out now and a new ten-minute video has arrived online chronicling how the record came together. The behind-the-scenes video is pretty straightforward (though starting off and interspersed with Lynch-ian weirdness) and features probably the most direct interview that Lynch has ever done, at least in terms of shedding light on his process. You can also catch some footage of Lynch playing slide guitar in the studio. It’s great that Lynch is still excited about pushing his own boundaries at his age but we still wish someone with some extra cash would just finance Lynch’s next cinematic foray into the weird. Someone get Megan Ellison on the phone. Watch below and tell us if...

David Lynch directed the music video for the Nine Inch Nails single "Came Back Haunted," and it's one serious sensory overload.
The "Mulholland Drive" and "Blue Velvet" director's video comes with an epilepsy warning, and it's immediately obvious why: It flashes through a string of creepy images, strobe-light-style, ultimately reading as a four-minute distillation of "Lynchian" filmmaking. In other words, it's super intense and resistant to easy interpretation.
Aside from being a famously surrealistic director, a controversial modus operandi that has earned him praise and criticism in equal measure, Lynch is also a recording artist. His latest album, "The Big Dream," is out July 16 -- and it features Lykke Li on a bonus track.
Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor produced the soundtrack for Lynch's 1997 movie "Lost Highway."

David Lynch has unveiled new single 'Star Dream Girl'.
The track is the first official single from the director's upcoming second solo album The Big Dream.
It is available now as a double-a side digital single alongside 'Are You Sure'.
Lynch said: "After I moved away from Boise, Idaho, I came back in the summer of '61. Around that time, Jerry Lee Lewis was supposed to play at this big club in the Sagebrush Desert - I think it was called the Miramar. Back then, these big events would catch people's imaginations.
"They would take their motorcycles or hot rods to these remote places to see some star. So we all drove out to this place, but Jerry never showed up and people were really pissed off.
"'Star Dream Girl' has that same kind of charisma. People can't wait to see her and come from miles around."

David Lynch has voiced his dislike for the modern trend of watching movies on smartphones and portable devices.
The legendary Blue Velvet director, who will release his new studio album The Big Dream on July 15, opened up about the state of cinema in an interview with The New Review for this week's Independent on Sunday.
Lynch stated his belief that modern technology is damaging the filmgoing experience.
"If you have a chance to enter another world, then you need a big picture in a dark room with great sound," he said.
"It's a spiritual, magic experience. If you have the same movie on a little computer screen with bad sound - and this is the way people are seeing films now - it's such a shame. It's a shameful, shameful thing. It's so pathetic."

Trent Reznor and David Lynch previously put their heads together for the latter's 1997 movie "Lost Highway," so it makes sense that they've decided to collaborate again, this time on Nine Inch Nails' new stuff. Reznor Tweeted a pic of him and Lynch together (as seen here), just to prove we're not, in fact, dreaming. Did you see David Lynch's teaser on Vine? The real announcement is here: he'll be dropping a new album, The Big Dream, on July 16th. Watch the album trailer above and listen to the new track, "I'm Waiting Here", below:
Lars von Trier will be taking a new approach to promoting his new (two part!) film, Nymphomaniac:
"Using a structure known from literature Nymphomaniac consists of chapters, encapsulating both Volume I and Volume II and during the next eight months, starting from June and like domino pieces counting down to the release, small bites of these chapters will be published exclusively by a community of selected newspapers around the world.
Each chapter teaser is defined by a headline, a still and a short narrative that playfully unveils the multilayered universe of Nymphomaniac with which Lars von Trier wants to introduce a new film genre: Digressionism."

Followup to Crazy Clown Time will be 'more confident' and feature a Dylan cover and a collaboration with Lykke Li
David Lynch is to release a second solo album, described as a "tighter" and "more confident" followup to 2011's Crazy Clown Time. The Big Dream, due on 15 July, includes a cover of a Bob Dylan song and a collaboration with Swedish indie star Lykke Li.
Whereas Lynch's last LP was generally portrayed as a weird dance album, The Big Dream is described as "a hybrid, modernised form of low-down blues". "Most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and then we go sideways from there," Lynch said in a statement. "The blues is an honest and emotional form of music that is thrilling to the soul. I keep coming back to it because it feels so good."

So a bit of good news/bad news for David Lynch fans. The good news is that he's got something new to share with you, the bad news is that it isn't a new movie. Nope, the director has instead cranked out another album, this time called The Big Dream, which is far less of a Lynch-ian name than his previous effort, Crazy Clown Time. But as usual, he's got some surprises up his sleeve. Most notably, he's teamed with Swedish sensation Lykke Li for "I'm Waiting Here," and while you can listen to it in advance, if you want to own it, you'll have to buy the digital or vinyl editions of the album. Meanwhile, Lynch also covers Bob Dylan's "The Ballad Of Hollis Brown" among the rest of the album which contains 11 original tunes. "Most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and...

This year, voting members will have to cover 69 picks, and slim it down to a neat five nominations and among the titles worth mentioning that didn't receive a possibility at an Oscar nomination we have City Of Life And Death and Lebanon. Unfortunately, even this list is imperfect as there is no mention of titles that were big with critics such as Women Without Men, I am Love, Hadewijch. - The Golden Globes do things a little differently than the Oscars when it comes time narrowing down the absolute best in foreign language cinema. The Hollywood Foreign press do without the politics of one film per country quota, which is great when a smaller nation has a stellar year with at least two worthwhile mentions, and just makes sense for the France film industry who on average, give several reasons to appreciate the 7th art. The Venice Film Festival has announced it's 2009 line-up this week, showing off the films that will make-up it's 66th annual fest. Rome -- Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story" will headline a 24-film competition lineup at September's Venice Film Festival, which is heavy on first and second films from up-and-coming directors.
The lineup includes five U.S. films, four each from Italy and France, four from Asia, two from the Middle East -- with all 23 films named Thursday as world premieres.
A 24th surprise competition pic to be announced during the fest would also be a world premiere, officials said. The fest will feature 71 world premieres.
"We are very pleased and very honored to announce this lineup," Venice artistic director Marco Mueller said in a briefing Thursday, where Fatih Akin's comedy "Soul Kitchen"; "Accident," a thriller from China's Cheang Pou; and "A Single Man," a drama from Tom Ford starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, were revealed as part of the lineup.
All told, the fest will feature 16 first works and nine second works.

No disrespect, but I'm surprised that George Romero's Survival of the Dead receives a competition slot. At first glance, what I notice are the number of works from China and Hong Kong, India and a pair from Egypt. We see where the whole 3D appreciation thing is leading towards (they announced a yearly 3D award would be given out at the festival - regardless if the film was even at the festival) and perhaps its not milan, but it makes sense that American fashion designer Tom Ford to preem his directorial debut A Single Man in Italy. Since Gomorrah and Il Divo strong-armed their way into theaters, box office tallies in Italy have most likely changed for the better, and perhaps to an outsider like myself, it meant a return to form for Italian film in general. Expect to see major funding for the next vague of films to go towards film depicting political crimes and mafia crime dramas and perhaps, Michele Placido is among the first to have hit the jackpot receiving the backing 20th Century Fox Italia for his next project.
