In Season 1, we met people like Dani, a highly motivated and focused animator; Subodh, who’s been single all his life and eager to change that (and whose mother feels ill-equipped to help him navigate American dating culture); and Steve, a more recently diagnosed 63-year-old who wants to give his long-abandoned dream of finding a special someone another chance now that he’s beginning to better understand himself. In Season 2, we check back in with some of these familiar faces and follow the romantic journeys of a few new people on the spectrum as well.

Screenwriter Tony Spiridakis wasn’t familiar with the Museum of the Moving Image’s Marvels of Media Festival — which celebrates the work of mediamakers with autism — before penning his star-studded film Ezra, about parenting a child on the spectrum. But he quickly became a supporter after MoM founder and former AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan reached out.
“[The festival] understands the power of empathy and the undeniable beauty of diversity,” says Spiridakis, who now sits on its advisory board alongside Ezra director Tony Goldwyn. “It shows the unfiltered, authentic expression that comes from the unique perspectives of autistic mediamakers, something Hollywood and all artists can benefit from.”
Marvels of Media, taking place until tomorrow in Queens, joins the ReelAbilities Film Festival, which runs April 3 through 10, and is hosting Ezra’s New York premiere on opening night. Both of the film festivals are dedicated to disabled filmmakers and narratives showcasing characters with a disability.

When asked by her uncle and aunt what she wants from an “adult relationship,” autistic actor Dani Bowman answers, “You mean checking out the size of his banana?” Dani’s uncle and aunt — also her guardians — let out an embarrassed laugh in response. Dani repeats, “You know what I mean? His banana!” More awkward laughter follows. After a pause, the aunt says, “A lot of people think that girls on the spectrum don’t think about sex, but you do!”
The scene is a snippet from Netflix’s viral reality dating show, “Love on the Spectrum,” the newest season of which was released — and topped trending lists — on the streaming giant recently. The documentary-style show, which captures autistic participants navigating the dating world, won three Emmys in 2022 including for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, and has quickly become a darling of neurotypical audiences. “Heartwarming,” and “enlightening” are some common descriptors used by reviewers.

It was a gloomy Thursday afternoon on Aug. 31, 2017. My wife, Jessica, and I were sitting in a doctor’s office, waiting to speak with a the nurse practitioner who specializes in child development, who would tell us the results of her observation with our two-year-old son, Noah. She’d asked various questions regarding what he does and doesn’t do daily, and had given him different activities to perform in front of her. Jessica and I were formulating theories about what she might say about our son and his development after we’d qualified for early intervention services in our state, receiving therapies for fine motor, communication and others. Our older daughter, Sophia, also went through intervention after not demonstrating the “required word count” after hitting 18 months of age. But once we’d put her in preschool, she never stopped talking and expected a similar outcome with Noah.
And then she walked back in,...

It’s a quiet month on Netflix in January, but the streamer still has some good stuff lined up for the new year, including an interesting documentary about the Centra Tech cryptocurrency scam. Bitconned arrives on the first of the month alongside Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben adaptation, Fool Me Once, which sees an ex-soldier called Maya witness her husband’s murder on a nanny cam. The crime then leads her down a deadly path where she uncovers a deadly conspiracy.
Schitt’s Creek star Daniel Levy will also debut his first film as writer and director with Good Grief on Netflix this month. The movie follows Levy’s character Marc as he does some soul-searching after the death of his husband.

The 2023-2024 primetime television season looked nothing like previous years, with reruns, unscripted shows, and international imports populating broadcast networks’ lineups. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though undeniably justified, took quite a toll on all the networks. Fortunately, the strikes have been settled, production has begun on nearly every new and returning series, and the midseason January lineup hints that things are slowly returning to normal.
Here’s a look at the shows scheduled to launch their new season – or series – premieres in January 2024. NBC’s Chicago shows – Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. – will kick off new seasons on January 17th, with the Law & Order franchises returning on January 18th. New highly anticipated series debuting in January include Echo, Expats, Masters of the Air, The Brothers Sun, and Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale.

Although the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has only gone to two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by six different shows in the same stretch of time. “Love on the Spectrum” took the 2022 prize but is out of the running this time, leaving 2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” as the only show with a shot at pulling off the category’s first repeat victory in four years.
“Untucked” is one of three returning contenders in the current Best Unstructured Reality Program lineup, along with “Indian Matchmaking” and “Selling Sunset.” Both were bested by RuPaul’s series in 2021, while the latter also lost alongside it in 2022. Rounding out this bunch are “Vanderpump Rules,” which has finally broken through with Emmy voters after 10 seasons, and new show “Welcome to Wrexham,” which, according to Gold Derby’s odds, is heavily favored to win.

“The Rehearsal” has never been an easy series to pin down. Throughout the magnificent first season, questions stacked up with each new episode: Is it real, or is it fake? How much is real, and how much is fake? What does “real” even mean, in the context of a show about rehearsing for life’s biggest moments by playing out every possible scenario ahead of time? And among the dialogue-free birthday parties, dialogue tree conversations, and a bar on a soundstage that just happens to have an operating liquor license, don’t get me started on what might constitute a “fake.”
Where some saw incisive commentary on reality TV, others saw actual reality TV. The 74th Emmy awards ceremony has come and gone: trophies have been distributed, viral moments have circulated, and the time has come to do the math, figure out who came out on top, and unleash our rightful anger upon the TV academy for snubbing our favorite nominees. In other words, it's another typical year at the Emmys — which is actually a relief. The last time we all gathered around our screens to watch celebrities in beautiful gowns win trophies, absolute chaos erupted. It feels like one can simply copy and paste the same story every year. “This year’s Emmys ceremony had some wins, but ultimately still reminds us that little has changed when it comes to championing diverse talent.” The deck was already stacked against the Television Academy the minute the overwhelmingly white nominations were announced.
Some categories, like Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Best Actor in a Drama, even had multiple nominees from the same show; four of the seven slots in the former category were taken up by actresses from “The White Lotus.” It was proof of a core problem when it comes to issues of nominee diversity: Not only were the voters not looking at different actors for nominations, they also weren’t watching nearly as much television to begin with, preferring instead to stick with a few popular shows as opposed to spreading the love.

HBO roared back to the top of the Emmy Awards, with the premium cabler and its streaming counterpart, HBO Max, topping the total awards haul for 2022.
HBO/ HBO Max picked up 38 Emmys in total, doubling their 19 wins in 2021. HBO took home 10 wins in the limited series category thanks to “The White Lotus,” with Mike White winning for both best writing and directing. To close out the night, “The White Lotus” ultimately won best limited series while “Succession” won best drama series.
“Euphoria” took home six statuettes for its second season, including a win for series star Zendaya for best actress in a drama series (her second win for the show in the category). HBO Max’s “Hacks” won three Emmys, also for its second season.
