interesting documentary about a godawful sect

Warning: Spoilers
"Colonia Dignidad" is a documentary about the functioning of a reclusive group, founded by German settlers who had migrated (fled ?) to Chile.

If you want to determine whether a group is a sect, there's a more or less generally accepted checklist you can use. This checklist includes questions such as : does the group consist mainly of obedient followers in thrall to a charismatic leader ; do the followers believe that their leader has received a mandate from Heaven ; does the leader discourage critical thinking and secular knowledge ; does the leader preach virginity, chastity and probity while indulging in sexual kinks and quirks that would have given Caligula pause ? The "Dignidad" organization scored very, very high on the checklist. However, it went that extra mile by concluding an alliance with a dictatorial regime given to torture and assassination. The result was a hell of inhumanity and depravity, with political dissidents being tortured by, or on behalf of, Pinochet's cruellest henchmen.

It's a pretty good documentary ; it may not add much in the way of new information, but it analyses the phenomenon with an admirable clarity, mixing interviews and comments with contemporary footage. (I gather from the data on imdb that the documentary has been shown in a mini-series format. However, I watched it as a single continuous work. It was long, but never boring.) Many of the real-life details are jaw-dropping in their absurdity. For instance, the sect's leader succeeded in convincing his flock that newspapers were poisonous. As a result none of his followers dared to pick up an external and independent news source, from fear of becoming ill.

The documentary also asks some hugely relevant questions, such as : how did the group's leader (a ravening paedophile somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan) get away with his activities for so long ? Why did so many people - even people who should have known better - insist on treating his sect like a happy little community of farmers, philanthropists and idealists ? Who were his political friends and sponsors, both in Germany and in Chile ? And just who was manipulating whom ?

The documentary also includes a useful warning : if you're a parent, it's an excellent idea to take a VERY close look at the people you're entrusting your children to, for instance during a summer holiday. There's many a sport school, vacation club or youth organization which exists only in order to provide perverts with a steady supply of vulnerable victims.

So "Colonia Dignidad" is certainly worth your attention, although it's unlikely to leave you with a smile on your lips and a song in your heart.

A Shangri-La dreamt by a pervert Führer
jhmb20038 October 2021
Astonishing documentary about this rather unknown settlement in the Chilean Andes, populated by a weird, almost unbelievable flock of young Germans led by a crazy Führer, which endures for over 3 decades. The story is so engaging, twisted, mysterious and implausible that it is almost impossible to stop watching. Eerie and incredible testimonies and footage, as well as witnesses and victims of this cult sometimes seems to be the produce of a unleashed imagination. The only documentary of this sort that I´ve ever seen is "Wild, Wild Country", which sometimes looks weak and naïve in comparison with this true nightmare. Highly recommended.

A very good documentary about the best and worst a recluse community have to offer. I didn't knew about this case but I surely don't ever forget the events that took place in Colonia Dignidad . Not for the fainted heart. A cruel true story about human kind in its worst very well documented.

Every Chilean should watch this
alahya10 October 2021
As a Chilean, born in the 80's, growing in the fractured world of the Pinochet dictatorship, this documentary was absorbing. At some point, the news exploded with Salo Luna, speaking the unspeakable, narrating how this hardly known German group, influencing the Chilean politics, had done such and such. And little by little, that chamber of horror continued, giving space to more and more... in a way, this contributed not only to the downfall of the dictatorship, but also to search a point of understanding, as a wake up call to all things done in the past. In that perspective, the documentary is quite enlightening. You can go step by step and submerge yourself in the line of events. I believe it's a must see, for deniers and supporters, so that we don't repeat the mistakes of the past. No human should be allowed such an unlimited power, especially one that allowed such evilness.

Great, but hard to watch

Incredible look into the mind of a truly disturbed person. But this type of person is all too often present in our lives at some point. So will be difficult to watch for some. But an incredibly interesting look into a sadistic world, perpetrated by a psychopathic power monger who was also an incredibly disturbed pedophile. If you can handle it, definitely interesting.

a story about...
ops-5253514 October 2021
A religious psychopath and sosiopath, making his own roix moi, pouring insecticides over the people to make them become zombies of the wholly land called colonia dignidad in mid souther chile. A german pastor and his flock of germinized lambs with a vision, there are no other words for it than ''sect''.

Its yet another jonestown, but Well made documentary, tons of film and audio material and interviews makes this a 1st class ride into the mad mans world. Have a look you wont regret it.
