The Crystal Maze and Knighmare this is not
martyndrake197611 May 2022
A good effort, with some decent acting, creature make-up and some interesting sets, but sadly lacks any kind of humour, spontaneity and all the things that made TV series like Knightmare, The Crystal Maze and even Fort Boyard interesting and fun to watch. It's far too polished and controlled by the producers and is in no way "immersive" as they claim to be.

The stakes are so incredibly low. There is literally nothing to lose here other than the plot of the storyline. There are no prizes to be won. The contestants are therefore not much more than glorified actors that occasionally must solve puzzles - the rest of the time they're told what to say and do.

Plus there's far too much post-production work that further drives home that this is highly controlled, cheap way of getting a knock-off fantasy series that's disguised as some kind of real-life puzzle adventure game show. It doesn't know which genre it wants to be in.

A remake that misses the mark
firefox2k12 May 2022
A few people don't remember that this is not a new show. The Original concept for the show came out back in 2014 on ABC.

Then it was 12 people with the contestants aging from 19 to 40.

Wow..SWING AND A MISS!!! Awful
ebqrkhf11 May 2022
The biggest challenge of this show was to actually sit through it.

Hammy, wooden acting.

Tropes and jokes that never land.

A mish mash and rehash of tales already told with better direction and effects.

I'm sorry but i can't recommend, i wanted to like this so much, as i'm a huge fan of the Fantasy genre, but this was unwatchable.

Get a different director and try again is about all i can say.

Bland reality game show stuffed in bland fantasy story
techonethrowecolton11 May 2022
This show, while not terrible, suffers from a far worse fate: it's boring. The actors are decent, if not in cliched predictable roles, while the contestants all have the combined charisma and personality of a damp dish rag. The challenges are super dull, as there are no eliminations or prizes, the outcomes clearly dictated by the plot, thus robbing them of any interest. The storyline itself is just a standard fantasy story that raises no interest. Everything is rushed and its just actors spouting exposition and herding the contestants to their next challenge. I will say there was one joke i found very funny though: the cliffhanger at the end that means they think they're getting a second season. Would recommend staying far away from this bland mush.

Makes you feel embarrassed to watch
indigeninja12 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of those deals where you skip forward 10 seconds at a time because it's so boringly typical. You get a few minutes into it and it is sad. Cheesier than a three-cheese quesadilla. Cheesier than this review.

Amateur film
bobhunnicutt12 May 2022
I attempted to watch for the filming location. It's nearby, one of my son's worked there. Otherwise, the writing, direction, cinematography, musical score, acting, etc are unbelievably bad. Disney should be embarrassed.

no. no. no..
tony-146-69562613 May 2022
Low budget where all the money went into costumes.

Acting is really awful, specially the teen heroes. Excuse me, Paladins. They are unproven yet.

As others said, I haver seen high school plays that were much much better.

Plot is thin as the hope of a snowball in hell.

There is almost no world building. We know nothing about the 8 teens that were summoned to boring world. At the end of episode 1 we still do not anything. There is no character building.

And it is boring. Eye glazing boring.

I am a geek who love all things fantasy. This ain't it.

Good for young children
troupadore17 May 2022
The bad reviews are likely grown adults. I could see this as a positive show for young children. Not scary, positive messaging (team work, wisdom, perseverance). Lots of fun makeup and corny characters.

High School Plays are Better
nnstt1312 May 2022
Disney should feel embarrassed. A high school play would have done better. Everything is so forced and bland. There is zero depth to this and is completely rushed. As such, there is no connection and desire to continue watching this. The preview was the best thing this show had to offer.

I am thoroughly shocked at how TERRIBLE this is!

Return to Everealm
dahmenjudith12 May 2022
As a fan of the first hour (The Quest 2014 blew me away!), I can't help to compare the old and the new. I'll be honest, as soon as the soundtrack set in, and I realised they had gotten the same composers from 2014 back, I was hooked, and a second later, I was fully emersed in Everealm.

Yes, the show has its flaws, that was to be expected.

Filming with underaged teenagers makes some things more difficult in general with limited filming hours per day and such. Some of the after-challenge-talks among the Paladins came across kind of staged and clumsy although I'm sure they were authentic. As soon as a scripted character was present and asked them questions, this awkward atmosphere was gone, so maybe to that more next season?

The scripted characters sometimes - very rarely though - acted incomprehensively, especially the castle's guards and also Prince Cederic. He drove me nuts with his actions.

Some of the challenges were well thought through, others were hard to grasp for the audience and the Paladins alike, and the fact that there was no elimination this time (Thank the Fates!) often made it hard to understand how the winner was chosen.

While most of the props and costumes were top notch (I SO appreciated that the royals wore different costumes every day as royals would.), a few props and costumes looked super cheap like bad LARP equipment, and the same goes for the creatures, which is very strange because some were SOOO lifelike and others looked like unconvincing Power Rangers villains. It was almost as if two different teams had worked on the make-up, props, and costume department.

Apart from these points of criticism, there's only good things to say.

The writers filled the story with so much lore and history, so much character development. The characters have depths, they have pasts, there is no black and white. The story starts off much darker and with an imminently menacing atmosphere. All actors were 100% convincing, I suffered with them, I cheered with them. The special effects (I know how difficult CGI fire is!) were fantastic, the music combined the old Quest soundtrack and also had new beautiful themes. The Paladins were a fantastic team, each of them super likeable, and they were 100% immersed in this world - as was I.

I can't wait to return to Castle Saenctum next season!

Continue the Quest.

It's ok. Fun at times, cool effects, and yes it's corny
mule_us12 May 2022
This show is about teens from modern times being "transported" to a medieval reality show. Its basically LARPing there is zero chance of pulling off the concept without being corny.

If you can make it past that its a fun watch. The actors do a decent job. The costuming and creature makeup is excellent. The world building is so so, but immersive enough.

The weakest part is the reality show aspect. The format doesn't give much room for the participants to show personalities or interact in a non-forced way. They mostly sit around listening to the characters speak and then run from challenge to challenge. Sometimes they say, "Ewww bugs" or "wow we did good on that challenge." That's the extent of it.

The challenges they face are pretty vanilla and low stakes. Although its really a kids show so don't expect things to get too scary or the storyline to be anything special.

Again, mindless fun and a decent attempt by Disney at this concept.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME
seanmoraghan17 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The worst rubbish I have ever watched, bad script, bad acting. I have seen better acting on WWF & Shortland Street. Google Shortland Street & you will see haw bad that is.

This show is a waste of time & money, Disney must be getting desperate.

OMG it is that bad, I just want to PUNCH in that face the writers, the terrible actors, anyone who gave it more than a 2 & the producers.

Sad

Horrible acting. Couple that with dreadful writing. I see why Disney didn't promote this series. I managed to watch the first episode and part of the second. I didn't have any expectations, yet I'm still disappointed.

Wow how terrible
thesanger-7508513 May 2022
The only reviews that like this mess must be family members or part of the cast. I really tried hard twice to watch it but never made it through the first episode.

Boring and uninspired.
conniestims18 May 2022
Right off the bat, everything was PAINFULLY scripted. You could really tell that the contestants were told exactly what to say, and weren't given much of a choice as to what they should do. The writing is bland, generic and unimaginative, and takes wild leaps at times, showing that the original script must have been far more drawn out than the final product, and rather than rewrite it to be shorter, they simply cut out parts until it was good enough. What could have been a show with plenty of excitement, tension, and drama ended up as what is quite possibly one of the worst entries into the fantasy game show genre to date.

Another popularity contest
ertab26 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Started okay but then started giving out trophies based on votes at times. It was ridiculous, the best overall player didn't even get a single vote for the final challenge. Many of the contestants even started whining because they weren't winning. Overall very disappointing, good concept, poorly executed.

What The?
fdsci26 May 2022
I've seen better high school plays. Was there a Director, Was there a plot? Was there good acting? No, No, & No! You're embarrassed for the actors. There could've been better by accident but it seem to follow a path of boring nonsense that didn't Peak my interest.

Don't Expect the Original
jupitersnuds14 May 2022
For those of you that keep comparing this to the original, you will keep being disappointed by the fact that it isn't equal to its predecessor.

It will never be better or equal to original but that does not mean that it is not worth watching.

The acting is phenomenal, the makeup is incredible and the special effect are state of the art and the storyline reminds me of the Witcher.

Stop comparing it to something that it will never be.

This is a reinvention of something classic that happened 8 years ago.

Move with the times people.

There was alot of work, effort and care that went into this show and it shouldn't be based as heavily as it has been on this app.

Give it a chance, get lost in the story, enjoy the tension and Lord of the Rings like battles.

If it's not your cup of tea go rewatch the original after all nobody is making you watch this.

TV is for your pleasure alone so enjoy yourself elsewhere if you keep comparing it to some blast from the past.

Weird blend of genres.
mjhfoulds14 May 2022
The costumes are good. It's weird that tropes from Survivor-like reality shows are influencing a fantasy series. I think the producers of The Quest might be trying to make a comment about scripted and fake those reality shows are. After an episode I wasn't interested in any more.

Room for improvement but very fun.
shadmo32813 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Can't believe the insanely harsh reviews for this show. I found myself rooting for all of the paladins, hard to pick a favorite. And i loved Mila the Oracle! As far as the challenges go, it was a little confusing in collaborative challenges as to why one paladin would win over others. Could have been resolved with a Survivor style voting, or simply had more clear competition challenges, like escaping the snake man's rope cage.

The story was crafted enough make the challenges feel worthwhile, but I felt there was a little too much of the scripted story which seemed to remove some storytelling agency from the actions of the paladins. Very exciting when the paladins failed their challenge, and had to react to the consequences, like prisoners escaping.

Perhaps the occasional aside confessional with paladins to talk about what they're thinking and feeling would have been nice. This also would have been helpful for them to tell the audience about themselves, their interests, why they want to be the One True Hero.

Lastly I feel the final "boss battle" with Tavora was lackluster due to it being entirely reliant on CGI magic. This could have been fixed by making it a real challenge like a water cannon shootout/dunk tank - something the One True Hero could actually physically manipulate that would mechanically trigger a real trapdoor that indicates Tavora has been destroyed or trapped. Add some real pyro for spice. Pointing at each other and yelling, which the other paladins pretend they can see VFX that aren't there, was not compelling, and probably not fun for them to film either.

Hope it gets renewed and they learn from the mistakes of this season, because I think the concept is so fun and I know I would have loved to be one of the competing paladins.

I really enjoyed it actually 😊❤
kristopherleclaire12 May 2022
I was surprised. Started of rocky but ended up bringing the whole thing in 1 day.

Yes it is cheesy but it is a teen show with teen doing challenges, you can't make it like survivor level hard.

If you like fantasy and always wanted to be immersed in a fantasy world, you'll enjoy it.

I'd pay to be able to through an adult version of this ❤

This is depressing
scottagreen9122 September 2022
What is the point in Disney spending so much money on what ultimately is rubbish.

Just wipe it from Disney +

It is absolutely ruined by a bunch of specifically selected multi-cultural teens. Seems like an effort to meet certain targets for the year of 2022. Especially when you see this appears to be an objective. Not subtle at all.

It feels more like a bunch of pre-teens left the tracks from Disney World and came across a bunch of wanna-be actor has-beens.

You know it's bad when you don't typically write reviews but feel compelled to warn the world how trash something really is.

There should be a petition calling for Disney + to go back to the drawing board. Spend another $50 million or so on some other trash.

No thank you.

Better to blind oneself to watch this travesty
david_honig3 April 2023
In the history of mankind there have been several epic falls from grace: Lucifer's Fall, Highlander 2, Lost Boys 2 & 3. Eclipsing even the Morning Star, burned into humanities psyche is The Quest 2022.

As all of you most certainly know The Quest 2014 was an amazing fantasy competition that combined LARPing with reality TV. The 2022 Disney+ reboot was as tragic as the Two Corey's last film Lost Boys: The Thirst and a non-sequitur on par with Highlander 2.

A few details: Changing the show from a LARP competition among Survioresque candidates, to entitled young adults spouting aphorisms. The challenges that once were actually challenging and interesting, became trivial and even worse entirely faked. Character development (good or bad, influenced or not) which is a backbone of competition and reality stories was replaced by middle school acting with a bad script.

In short, I've seen it and I curse my eyes. Don't follow my path.

Good story but....
ryanramsey10 January 2023
I enjoyed the story, it reminds me of old style choose your adventure books. This would be great for K-6 kids with a passion for adventure and the D&D genre. Completely safe content.

The casted actors were good and could stand in thier own without the paladins. I had to scratch my head and wonder, why can't they just do this in thier own?

The untrained children paladins and thier fabricated lessons learned were painful to watch.

It was clear that the author wanted to emphasize the value of teamwork, heart, courage and the sort but it just didn't come together.

The last episode is probably the best but the whole story wrapped up without connecting the contributions of the paladins to the local nobility.

A fun little show
tedted210 July 2022
At first I almost turned it off cause it was a bit cheesy but kept watching and found myself rooting for the kids and wanting to know how it finished. I've got some qualms with it, but overall a fun show to watch on a lazy weekend.
