This isn't what we loved
tolgasabe22 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am sorry. We didn't love samurai X for him fighting 1000 people, evading 2000 swords. We liked the strategy, his thoughts during the fight. We loved the single combats.

Just could finish the trash mob in 2-3 swings and make better duels.

Would cost less also.

Enishi had at least 5 chances to finish kenshin but didn't. Looked silly.

Please be more careful with single combats.

We don't need lots of jumping humping flipping flopping.

More stars for the action but not the plot
stormrider6526 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
While I as a Singaporean Chinese love action films, and grew up with them, I cannot reconcile with the fact that the protagonist went to the base of his enemies head-on and alone, using only his Katana to fight 500 swordsmen, many coupled with fire-power.

I can understand when Bruce Lee went over to the Japanese dojo and whacked the living lights out of 20 karate men, due to the latter being a local bullies there and indirectly caused a few Chinese to fatality. But this show is of a totally different level - the main villain Erishi led his contingent to practically leveled the whole town to ground, killing hundreds of innocent people and even Himura's friends and family.

No one in the right mind and with some IQ will walk through the main door armed with only one piece of Katana. I can certainly understand Why the plot goes this way - if not there will not be a 'movie' to begin with, but the story or plot can be tweaked to strengthen the 'logic' behind such a move, and not result in the viewer being mind-boggled and confused.

Better than previous ones, despite previous ones being one of the best in the genre
romelv19 June 2021
When people ask me what are the best action/martial arts movies of 21st century, only two of them comes to my mind - The Raid and Rurouni Kenshin (well, maybe John Wick is somewhere there not that far behind as well).

But Rurouni Kenshin is more than just action. People who are interested in historical movies will find RK movies interesting due to their setting. People that like action will love it for insanely well choreographed fights. People that like comedy or drama will find it here as well.

This time, RK movie feels darker and more serious than the previous ones, but that is actually a good thing, since the theme of the movie was serious and sad. Soundtracks are outstanding in this one, just like the cinematography. If I had to shortly describe it, I would say that it is an improvement in all departments. Sequel done right. Don't miss it.

I laughed a lot during this movie.

The acting is bad but made me laugh, sometimes the actor would have a high pitched voice and then 1 second later he was talking very low pitched. Also the ketchup blood made me laugh.

The fighting scene's and cinematography were cool.

But the story was stretched too much, could've been 1 hour shorter.

I'de give it a 6 for all the laughing, i did enjoy myself even though it probably wasn't ment to laugh.

Unpopular opinion
Justareview2 August 2021
I watched the beginning and the final of this movie, and i can say that the actors were spectacular ! I have never seen something like this and since i start watching it i became interested in Japanese- fight movies ! The writer of the script and the actors really deserve congratulations, but i only have one single complain that affected my rating... why kenshin had to marry another girl at the end? I mean .. the whole movie is based on the deep love story of him and the first girl .. that he accidentally killed... and he was deeply in love with her.. so much that i was crying ..haha! So why he had to marry another one as if it was nothing ? This messed up my opinion.

Are we just going to forget that Yahiko was already fighting so good in the Part II Kyoto Inferno and now here he is suddenly a weakling. How did they miss that.

A fitting end to this series. Can't wait for the beginning.
wyymnqjazw18 June 2021
The sword fights and the wire works are out of this world. And the story is really a tragedy which shows the torment and the suffering of the protagonist and why he did what he did to atone for his sins and regrets. Fans of Ruronie should watch this.

When the hero suffers, so does the audience
A_Different_Drummer20 June 2021
Mixed bag. If you are fan you are going to love it. If you are new to this, you are going to wonder what all the fuss is about. Agree with other reviewers noting there is a lot of "air" in Part I, almost as if they wanted to max out the story. For a second payday.

Decent effort
MickeyTheConstant17 November 2021
It's not as good as the other movies in the franchise but is still a decent effort. To come back after all this time and still make a movie that adds to the franchise and for all these superb actors to just simply reprise these roles like it was only yesterday is very impressive. Good action movie but something is lacking compared to the other movies.

It became what the first films were not: a caricature
lacgratacos19 June 2021
The first 3 films stood out among live action films for their down to earth perspective, beautiful choreography, charismatic actors and memorable music. This 4th installment fell flat overall.

From treating their characters with respect, it became a cariature of itself, many becoming useless bystanders and taking actions out of character.

Only 1 battle choreography was up to par with previous films, with characters using their environment and prolonged shots.

Establishing the setting dragged far too long.

Its a real shame. This series of movies had created a new standard of live action films, and it didn't deliver what originally set it apart.

You'll want to watch the OVAs right after.

Good Samurai Sword Action
john-bachak6 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't seen the previous ones, so I was doing a bit of catch up. But I must say Enishi Yukishiro is actually the more interesting character in the film. At least in this film. Even his fighting style i preferred then Kenshin's. The film even starts with him and you pretty much see his story unfold & his simmering rage and despair from His sisters death. He has a very sympathetic motivation, although by the end he realises his motivation was misguided. I wouldn't mind seeing a movie with him trying to redeem himself.

The martial arts choreography and acrobatics aren't anything particularly new but still entertaining due its unique visual style. It really is like an anime come to life visually. Except that for a movie that features sword fighting there doesn't seem to be much blood or hacked limbs as you would expect. If you see people get cut, It's always out of angle. When people die in explosions, you never see anyone get blown up. You only see the aftermath. Thus you don't get the sense of danger or dramatic tension. My only real gripe with this film.

I'm a martial arts manic so I'll definitely be checking out the previous films.

Oops just realized I didn't watch the first three movies
Movi3DO21 August 2021
A live action adaptation of the anime with the same name. In 1879, Kenshin and his allies face their strongest enemy yet: his former brother-in-law Enishi Yukishiro and his minions, who have vowed to take their revenge.

I have never heard of this anime, so I only judge the two movies as standalone.

The best part of the movie was for sure the action. The choreography was amazing with people flying around and got kicked through many rooms. The sword fight and movement from the main characters were incredibly clean and smooth.

Another positive aspect was the villain, Enishi. Although the protagonist Kenshin was badass during action scenes, Enishi was badass throughout with the cool look and great acting. His motive made sense and he wasn't just a purely evil character.

My biggest problem was the story itself. Even though the movie was 2 hours and 20 minutes, it felt very fast with many side characters introduced. However, there seemed to be too many side plots to be included in the whole movie. Also, because of this, there wasn't enough time to care for the characters. At the end, the emotion just wasn't there.

Overall, solid actions but overdone story. 7.5/10.

Best Action Film I Have Ever Seen in My Life
seanthezon19 June 2021
Wow, just wow. My rating above is not accurate because I give The Final an 11/10. I am honestly left awestruck with what I just watched. I did not know this film series could transcend the limits of cinema any higher than the standard the previous three movies had set, but I am so glad to say that they not only managed to pull it off, but they literally blew it out of the water with this one and overexceeded expectations in every aspect of the film. Rurouni Kenshin The Final is the best action movie I have ever seen in my life, and it's not even close at all.

The fights were out of this world mindblowing. Loved to see more of the side characters in action as well, they got their shine with their superb fight scenes too. Cinematography was amazing, the movie truly shines as a full fledged, well developed action drama. They nailed the drama aspect perfectly on this one, better than the first three and I love to see it. The mood and emotional weight was so heavy, this film was every bit my vibe and I loved every second of it from start to end. Somehow, someway, they even managed to improve the already amazing soundtrack of the previous three movies and I loved that they added music to more scenes. As great as the previous three movies are, The Final easily makes them look and feel like they were on training wheels, in my opinion.

Yukishiro Enishi and his gang were all so scary and menacing, I loved every bit of them. The villain writing was just so perfectly well done. Enishi and his group are exactly what I want villains to be. What else is there to say, perfectly casted and executed from top to bottom. Every actor and actress excelled in each of their own respective roles and brought a new level of depth to their character.

I am so thankful to all of the creators and actors and actresses who made this film series possible. It's been an amazing 10 years, I give a sincere thank you, truly from the bottom of my heart. The two year wait was so worth it. I am so grateful, I can't wait to see The Beginning next! Thank you, Kenshin.

Excellent installment in the series
kelvynchin20 June 2021
The wandering samurai, Himura Kenshin, is now settled in Tokyo 12 years after the epic battle against the super terrorist Shishio (as seen in parts 2 and 3 of the series). But the peace is shattered by the emergence of a new adversary from Kenshin's past with a link to the Chinese Mafia, and could trigger an upheaval in the new government of Tokyo. Kenshin must once again draw on his back-blade to defeat this new threat together with Sanosuke the street fighter, Aoshi the long bladed watcher, and the chain smoking police inspector Saito . Cue excitement galore amid moments of high emotion and drama. Although not hitting the heights of the previous installments (parts 2 & 3) there is enough swashbuckling action and heartwarming moments to please both fans of the series as well as new converts. The baby faced assassin Sojiro also appears in one of the series' show stopping action highlights. Great continuation of the adventures of the man formerly known as the fearsome killer Battosai, who has learnt that to atone for his past sins, he should not die, but to preserve his own life to perform good deeds. Pic ends with poignant moments, perhaps a closure to Kenshin's relationship with his long time admirer, Kaoru. Highly recommended, and much better than any Hollywood action movie recently.

Decent remake
jindann21 June 2021
This series is actually a remarkable adaptation of the manga and animation. Similar to its previous movies, the scenes and battles are shot beautifully, with fast and well choreographed sword actions, and a decent plot that retains some essence of the original. While Kenshin was based on a most feared assassin in Japanese history, this part of the side story(OVA anime) isnt from the original author but the production company.

There are also some other downsides like overloading with too much long battles with the pawns and subordinates which becomes a bit of drag, over exaggerated acting by some actors and ridiculous costumes/moves which were some of the common problems of Japanese movies, well as some rather long stalling with motionless instances. Though I cant blame the production too much as this is still adapted from an anime and it had tried to keep these at minimal, I would prefer the story to stick more closely to the anime, while the presentation matches more closely to the real world to make the movie more convincing, with characters castings that have closer resemblance to the anime/manga.

Pretty Good
MickeyTheConstant10 August 2021
An enjoyable addition to the original trilogy. The cast really don't look like they have aged at all. It was really nice to see characters back that you genuinely cared for. Action sequences really good again and the general feel of it was similar to the others. Really enjoyed it.
