This was fun to watch...
paul_haakonsen21 October 2021
I remember watching "Dogtanian" on the TV when I was about 7 or 8 years old, every Saturday and Sunday morning. But I must admit that I didn't know what there was a 2021 CGI animated movie in the works. I stumbled upon this 2021 animated movie by random chance, and opted to sit down and watch it with my son, and let he see something that I watched when I was buy a boy.

It should be said that the 2021 CGI animated movie "Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds" definitely was in the spirit of the 1981 animated cartoon, so it was somewhat of a trip down memory lane for me. And the storyline told in "Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds" was enjoyable for both my son and I, so that was something great from writer Doug Langdale.

The voice acting in "Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds" was good, which is something of importance when you're watching an animated movie. I weren't familiar with anyone on the cast list, for better or worse. But I will say that the voice acting was suitable for the movie.

The CGI art style was also nice. They managed to keep the style of the 80s animated cartoon, while adding an updated touch to it at the same time.

"Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds" is enjoyable for old fans of the 1980s cartoon, just as it is enjoyable for newcomers unfamiliar with the characters and storyline.

I am rating "Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds" a six out of ten stars.

Much better than I expected.
sarcasm_for_free2 January 2022
As a watcher of the TV series, I watched this with interest to see what was better/worse than it.

First of all, the new CGI animation was good. Not exactly Disney quality, but when you can count the amount of wrinkles on the end of a dog's nose, I'm officially impressed.

I was also pleased with the way the characters were portrayed. Not just Dogtanian and the musketeers, but other underwritten characters from the show like Milady and Juliet get more to do here and have noticeably stronger personalities.

Even Pip, who annoyed me immensely in the original because he always seemed so out of place, actually has a place and a reason for existing. And when the film actually got me to LIKE him, you know it's doing something right.

On the downside, there is a pretty awful love song here which fortunately isn't on for very long (unless you want to torture yourself by staying through the credits). And the plot structure is very predictable, especially if you've already sat through other iterations of this oft-told tale before.

Still, those are minor quibbles in the great scheme of things. This film surpassed all my expectations, and I recommend it mostly for fans of the old show (you may even spot a few tributes to it, if you keep your eyes peeled). Who knows, maybe even your kids will like it too... ;) 6/10.

A doggy and attractive version in 3D of the classic tale written by Alexandre Dumas
ma-cortes28 November 2023
In 17th century France, young D'Artacan (or Dogtanian) travels to Paris to fulfill his ambition to become one of the King's Musketeers. He befriends Athos, Porthos and Aramis and falls in love with Juliette. Stars hot-headed D'Artacan (D'Artagnan) in a brave role as a young and handsome dog of fortune, a dashing , audacious lover and nimble athlete. D'Artacan and the three musketeers or muskehounds must defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war. This delightful adaptation based on Alexandre Dumas classic novel starts with the youngster D'Artacan who arrives in Paris to find Mister Treville , chief of Musketeers. But he meets with three two-fisted Musketeers , rollicking adventurers , fighting to live and living to love and they dared a thousand perils. Fearing that D'Artacán reports the king, Richelieu orders Rochefort and his particular guards to kill him, making that D'Artacán, Amis, Dogos and Ponthos leave his misunderstanding behind to fight together. D'Artacan to be aware they are Musketeers and is invited to unite them in their objective to struggle against guards of Cardinal Richelieu, Rochefort and the astute Milady De Winter who is lovely as a jewel, deadly as a dagger the wickedest woman in all Christendom . Meanwhile, D'Artacan falls in love with a gorgeous young, Juliette, she is a golden-haired beauty entangled in a web of treachery and intrigue. Furthermore , there is developed an intrigue between Luis XIII, Queen Anne of Austria, Duke of Buckingha ; and of course, the nasty Richelieu, as evil as ever . The musketeers join forces for royal vengeance with the shout : ¨One for all and all for one¨

The Dog Knight(2021) professionally directed by Toni Garcia, Stephen Hughes results to be a slight an likeable retelling about the durable Alexandre Dumas's novel. An amusing and colorful adaptation set in Paris, circa 1625, a brave puppy helps three sword dogs in their fight against the king's enemies while falling in love with Julietta. So they have to recover a valuable necklace that the evil Milady de Winter has stolen. And they join forces to avoid a plan about topple Luis XIII as part of powerful and cruel Cardinal Richelieu's masterplan to unleash the war against England. The 3D animation is good but it's nothing special. A vein of humour is evident here, especialy bit the mouseThe troublesome mouse that always accompanies Dartacan who usually helps or betrays him . Here the comic and ironic tones are increased, though sometimes falling flat. For this movie itself , though , energetic and frantic are the best adjectives you could think of to describe its attraction. The characters are more cuddly than daring, as they were in the books. D'Artacan is still feisty and headstrong but as this is a children's cartoon they had to remove his amourous nature. The characters more or less follow the traditional cannon, adapted a thousand times to the big screen and television.

This classy story is adapted on several versions , firstly take on about this classic is the following : 1921 silent version by Fred Niblo with Douglas Fairbanks and going on the 1935 adaptation by Rowland V Lee with Walter Abel and Paul Lukas ; 1973 amusing version by Richard Lester with Michael York, Oliver Reed , Raquel Welch and Charlton Heston as Richelieu ; The Three Musketeers (1993) by Stephen Herek with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt ; 2001 rendition by Peter Hyams with Justin Chambers, Mena Suvari and Tim Roth. And , of course, the classic series in animated cartoon: D'Artacan y los tres mosqueperros (26 episodes, 1981-1982).

A poor film trading on nostalgia, not quality.
katlson14 November 2021
First off I've no idea who is giving this film high scores but their reviews seem to indicate they've not actually seen the film.

We have regular 'cinema nights' with the kids (6 and 10) and when Dogtanian came up on Sky Cinema I thought it would be right down our street as I loved the animation as a child.

First off, this film is 1hr45 long, longer than Frozen yet or needed a good 45-50 mins shaved off as it has so many pointless bits which don't add anything other than boring bulk.

The voice acting is awful, you can literally feel the actors struggling to read the script, adding pauses in strange places and mispronouncing words. The story is over complicated for children, quite boring and dull. There's a fart joke 5 minutes in and I'd argue that it was the peak of the film.

The animation is awful, so low budget, it's clear they spent all the money on the rights to a beloved cartoon and had little left. It looks like it was made on an old movie maker package on a 20 year old PC. There are two camera angles and that's your lot. It looks horrible (though the line art 'flashback' was nice and served only to show how rubbish the rest of the film was). It was so poor it distracted from what plot there was.

We turned the film off before the end, I have to admit it. I'm SO disappointed my favourite cartoon as a child has become this. The kids were FINE with us turning it off which I think says it all.

Save your time and watch the old cartoons on YouTube or just watch a different film altogether.

Good Movie, But May Not Be Everyone's Top Dog
jeremycrimsonfox1 February 2022
TBH, when I saw the test footage of this film, I thought this was cancelled. However, it was done and released only in Spain and the United Kingdom.

Dogtanian And The Three Muskehounds is a remake of the classic 1980's Spanish-Japanese cartoon that is based on the 1844 classic tale, The Three Musketeers, the movie is basically a retelling of the series, starting with Dogtanian and his father's duel. After defeating his father, he earns the family heirloom, the Omega Sword, and is sent to Paris to become a Muskehound, only to team up with three of them, Anthos, Porthos, and Aramis, as well as Juliette, a lady in waiting Dogtanian falls in love with, and Pip, a mouse thief who becomes his squire, to save France from an evil plot from Cardinal Richelieu, who aims to sieze the throne by starting war between France and England.

Now, this may not be a film for everyone who grew up with the original cartoon. There are new voice actors (and whoevers voices Dogtanian is good, but not as good as the legendary Cam Clarke, the original English voice of the hero), and it does add characters not seen in the original (like Pip, who can be found as annoying), but it does a good job with the story (adding in more details and even some 2D scenes that look like the original series updated). I recommend watching this and coming to your own conclusion, but I see it as a good film in my book.

Worse animation than the 80s kids cartoon
cornishcarrot21 October 2021
Ignore the obvious fake reviews from shills, the crude animation would have looked bad 20 years ago and the charmless 3d renditions of the characters have none of the personality or details of the 80s cartoon. Even the crappy clipart 2d animation flashback scenes are infinitely better than the awful, barely animated CG that looks like a student project

As an 80s kid who loved the original I was nostalgia baited into watching this disaster and regret every minute. Absolutely unnecessary and a totally pointless remake that misses the mark in every way.

Really not sure who this movie is aimed at
suzanneg-615086 August 2021
I took my kids to see this at the cinema, having never seen the original. The animation quality was poor especially considering it was shown in the cinema. The language they used to tell the story went straight over my kids' heads so it was difficult for them to follow and most of the characters lacked personality. We were all utterly bored and glad when it was over.

Everything good about this is taken from its source materials.
sramsey-janus13 December 2021
The voice acting and dialogue are clumsy, the animation is cheap, and the overall production is cheap. Any other version of this story would be better.

Classic brought to new audience
steve-4243929 June 2021
It must be difficult to remake something for the modern age something that was produced 40 years ago with the common techniques, styles of the times and for the typical audience. The world has moved on, the risk is to make something new for the modern audience that the older audience will hate. This film has done a remake but with a nods to the classic. The 1980's version was a version the classic Dumas story made child friendly at the time, and this it what they have done again for a more modern audience. If you are a fan of the original look out for the dream sequences and watch all the credits at the end there will be things very familiar. If you are too young to remember the original take your kids for a treat and hopefully it will get them into reading books, as that was the effect it had on my back in the 1980's last time round.

Lets hope that Apolo films get funding for remaking some of the other BRB classics.

A dreadful movie that shouldn't be a movie
mjames-4563815 November 2021
Why this title you ask? It's simple, you needed perfection, skill, wit and a project that works so successfully that you only wish to turn back the clock to 30 years ago when computer animation has caused a major revolution when it comes to animation. Toy Story was the ground-breaker and since the rip-roaring success of that movie, more and more animated films relied on CGI to make it pleasurable viewing to animation addicts, children and some critics who accept this as today's norm.

Even if today's norm, we sometimes have to accept the fact that animation and cartoons on TV and film (and allsorts) have started to make us feel that we are just on a point of making us lose that loving feeling. (Personally I'll never lose my love of the Toy Story quadrology) Animation was loved by many, not the few during the 1930's with Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny plus more animated films would be registered as golden, timeless classics from the western animation of Beauty and the Beast and the highly acclaimed anime Spirited Away. Animation was pure gold in those days.

Wait a minute, what am I talking about? I meant to review this movie, Dogtanian and the Three Muskelhounds. This is actually a rip-off of the popular 1981 anime by BRB Internacional. I admit I've seen the series myself and also the sequel series too. Did I like it? For both of them, no. I didn't like the narrative, the flaws that pop up and also in one episode which I won't say of which one it was has the ultimate cliche of watching entertainment, the idiot plot.

In this movie itself, it has the idiot plot with not of the characters, not of the storytelling and not of the plot but for the whole movie itself. I wanna condemn this movie for adding in a character that does not appear in the original 1981 anime. Captain Bloodhound appears after an hour into this movie. He is actually a bloodhound (I know you're cringing) plus he has a parrot that doesn't do much. Why is this trying to lure kids into watching this pointless film version of it and why are many saying that the 1981 anime has a successful cult following when it shouldn't have to be in the first place?

I should say the Richard Lester version of The Three Musketeers is the one to watch most and also the Four Musketeers whereas both these films were actually an epic film filmed at the same time. Check it out and the same to the 1989 sequel if you wanna.

Sorry if I am being a nuisance to you if this review doesn't appease you much but if there are any other words to add about this movie, I might do so in the near future.

Really interesting adaptation
annamarie-jvv7 January 2022
I really enjoyed that they kept the main storyline and premise, yet reinvigorated the characters (especially the portrayal of Juliette). I expected to be somewhat bored because I knew the series of by heart as a child. However, through some clever twists and turns, I was pleasantly surprised.

Very beautiful film
trokanmariel-1776010 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is what I wrote, watching Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds:

1) The Pink Away 2) The Pink Wheel-A-Bout 3) Purple (undertake-her) 4) PIP's introduction

Following the list, that I assembled up above, what I realised had happened was that I'd come across an AIA vs UUCU tradition (or, if not tradition, a 'dog'mate of meta)

UUCU stands for uniformity, uniformity, contrast, uniformity. AIA stands for anti, intellect, anti, which basically means a roadtrip/slingshot for a central force, who is guarded by two anti's on the former's path to doginance.

During the screening, I also added -

AIA = all for one UUCU = suggesting OCD/"suggesting overdone" (quote by Aramis)

So, as for PIP themself:

It's better to be a co-UU in PINk, than to be late to the part-(wh)y. (A Brittney Havers tribute, from Wild Things 2)

Blast of nostalgia
engelbrechtjohann8 January 2022
I loved the book and the original animated series. This movie manages to stay as faithful to the book as possible, and to the series as well. To do this, it had to cut many of the side-stories from the series, but that's to be expected. I had one or two niggles with some elements of the story, but that doesn't matter, the rest of the movie made up for that.
