‘Forever’ creator Mara Brock Akil on updating Judy Blume — and finding ‘real intimacy’ — in the age of social media
Image
Since its publication in 1975, Judy Blume's young adult novel Forever... has stirred controversy for its frank exploration of teenage sexuality. By the same token, it's been an important touchstone for young readers navigating the thorny terrain of first love. It was an important book for Mara Brock Akil, a TV veteran who has re-interpreted it for Netflix for a new adolescent audience.

"Judy Blume was a first for me as a reader," Akil tells Gold Derby. "I think I became a writer because I was a reader first, and I was immersed in her world." Forever, which explores two teenagers navigating sex and intimacy for the first time, had a particular impact on Akil and her friends because "someone was willing to tell us the truth." Blume's book served as "our modern-day internet" for its young readers, explaining love, dating, and everything that comes with it. So when...

‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Creator and Stars on Kanan’s Villainous Transformation: ‘He’s Rolling With the Punches of What He’s Become’
Image
Season 4 of the 1990s-set hit Starz crime series “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” is roaring toward an explosive finale, and audiences are coming to grips with the fact that the teenage Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis) we met in Season 1 is completing his transformation into the monstrous villain who made his debut in “Power.”

Though he’s still keeping specific details close to his chest, “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” showrunner and creator Sascha Penn said in a recent FYC panel alongside the series’ stars that fans are in for some shocking revelations.

“Kanan’s relationship with Raq, the rest of his family, and Jukebox is one of the big questions everyone seems to ask: ‘Well, look at how close Kanan is to Jukebox. How could he possibly kill her the way he does in “Power”?’ And I’ll tell you, we do give a full and complete answer to that question for sure,...

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season Finale Sneak Peek: Snaps & Pop Want Kanan on the Winning Team
Image
Legacy.

It’s a word we’ve heard throughout the Power Universe, as various players of the game have fought to preserve their legacies and their place as leaders in the streets.

Snaps and Pop have cemented themselves, and as you’ll see in the sneak peek TV Fanatic received from Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 10, they believe Kanan has it in him to be a powerful player in the New York drug game.

(Starz/Screenshot)

Kanan is at an interesting point in his life. As he and his mother drift further apart, he is starting to think about what’s next for his future.

Unique’s proposition to Kanan about working together during Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 9 was partly rooted in Unique’s hatred for Raq, but he also respected Kanan’s hustle.

‘Forever’ Stars Michael Cooper Jr., Lovie Simone Discuss Filming “Vulnerable” Intimate Scenes For Netflix Series: “We Both Shared A Bit Of Nerves”
Image
In Netflix’s Forever, Mara Brock Akil’s serialized adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel of the same name, two Los Angeles high schoolers navigate young love and their first forays with intimacy. The tender-hearted show, which updates the source material’s time period, locale and protagonists, caused its fair share of “nerves” for lead actors Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone as they took on their more “vulnerable” scenes.

“Lovie and I, we really made a conscious effort to check in on one another,” Cooper Jr., in his breakout role, told People in a new interview. “We’re a bit vulnerable, but immediately, we kind of felt comfortable with our intimacy coordinator. It’s a lot of technicality when it comes to those things.”

“There’s 30 people in the room with a camera, and the way that you’re positioning your body, I mean, everything’s choreographed,” he explained,...

Chicago Fire’s New Villain? Budget Cuts Dressed as ‘The Padlock’
Image
It’s always fun to hear that your favorite show has been renewed, but for Chicago Fire fans, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, we’re getting another season.

But on the other hand, we’re losing at least two series regulars.

(NBC/Screenshot)

That’s one way to smother all the excitement and make us wonder whether the show can recalibrate.

It has survived many cast changes in the past, but audiences are becoming more fickle due to the many options available outside of broadcast TV.

(Peter Gordon/NBC)

As a network, NBC needs shows to be fiscally responsible, so the cast changes aren’t too surprising.

The Challenge: All Stars Is Losing Its Edge — Here’s How to Fix It
Image
The Challenge: All Stars started with a fantastic idea, but the Og concept seriously fell off with the recent All Stars Rivals.

While the throwback concept brought intriguing pairings and a few returning OGs that made it watchable, it lost the luster that arrived with the first several seasons.

And when that fifth season arrived, The Challenge: All Stars aired on a different network, and producers changed what initially worked, seemingly frustrating many fans.

(MTV/Screenshot)

We received some OGs and then cast members from recent seasons of The Challenge, arriving from CBS or other networks’ reality TV shows.

However, I believe All Stars can keep going and it’s apparent that the man who brought this concept to life, The Godfather Mark Long, is doing his darndest to keep things moving in the right direction.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 9 Leaves Us Headed for a Bloodbath
Image
That may have been Power Book III: Raising Kanan‘s best hour.

That may have been one of the best hours in the whole damn Power Universe.

And we still have one more hour to go this season.

(Courtesy of Starz)

As we approach the end of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4, ten different storylines are in motion, and that’s how Power has continuously operated.

Various characters and story arcs are being juggled, and at a certain point, many of them start to merge, which we are starting to see here.

This was the first hour we saw Kanan and Unique interact, the number one Raq haters, and Stefano turn on Raq, and Lou-Lou make a decision about his future.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 17’s Jolink Wedding Brings the Romance as Other Ships Crumble
Image
Whew, Grey’s Anatomy sure loves itself some messiness!

I don’t know what to say about Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 17 other than I had envisioned something totally different than what we’ve had, and now a girl’s feelings are all over the place.

Jolink’s wedding was whatever the heck it was, but the other relationships spiraled out of control during this hour.

(Disney/Anne Marie Fox) Jules Pursuing Her Options is a Wise Choice

It’s no secret by now that some of us are a bit conflicted about what’s going on between Jules and Winston.

They’re simultaneously tossing out the idea of them as a pairing too quickly while trying to operate under the guise of a slow burn, too.

Law & Order Svu Season 26 Episode 21’s Rear Window-Inspired Case Delivers A Powerful Penultimate Episode
Image
Whew! Talk about a disturbing case.

After a mostly lackluster 26th season, the penultimate episode of Law & Order: Svu delivered a dark case that was impossible to look away from.

From beginning to end, this Hitchcockian case kept the audience guessing while the cops investigated a particular heinous crime.

(Ralph Bavaro/NBC) How The Cold Open Was Similar to the Classic Movie Rear Window

I’m thrilled that the cold open was actually short, rather than wasting 10 minutes before getting to the point.

Even better, it was a takeoff on the Hitchcock classic, Rear Window, that went in an even darker direction than the original.

Rear Window stars Jimmy Stewart as a housebound man who witnesses a murder by looking through a telescope at his neighbors’ windows to pass the time, just like the guy in the cold open.

Found Season 2 Episode 21 Recap: Missing While a Family

We’re down to the wire, and it’s another pulse-pounding installment of Found to gear us up for what will surely be an epic season finale.

But furthermore, let’s get into the scene-by-scene recap of “Missing While a Family” and see what’s in store for Gabi, M&a, and the Evans siblings.

(Matt Miller/NBC)

A groggy Gabi wakes up in the hospital with blurry vision to the worried faces of Margaret, Lacey, and Zeke via phone. They say it looks like someone poisoned her, and she shares that she took something to make it look that way to better convince Sir that she wasn’t well, and Lena poisoned her.

Found Season 2 Episode 21 Reunites Margaret’s Family to Disasterous Effect and Introduces Dhan’s Past
Image
We knew the members of M&a would be vulnerable to this game the Evans siblings are playing, but they genuinely forgot about Jamie.

As the newest and unofficial addition to the unit, with the entire team stretched thin so often, it’s no surprise that he’d be the easiest to access. Hence, the final moments of Found Season 2 Episode 21 weren’t so much shocking as they left that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.

How on earth will they resolve this Lena situation?

(Matt Miller/NBC) M&a’s Latest Case Spotlighted Anti-Semitism

When we learned that an entire family was missing, there were so many questions about how that could be and how it would play out.

But as the case fell into place, it combined many things like conflict in religion, the type of normalized anti-semitism that has sadly become commonplace, and genuine greed.

Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 5 Brings Back A Familiar Face After The Most Disturbing Scene Of The Season
Image
Yes! When they mentioned Me Warner on Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 4, I was disappointed she wasn’t on-screen.

I didn’t expect her to ever be, given Tamara Tunie’s commitment to Beyond the Gates, but I was thrilled about her cameo on Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 5.

It was exactly what we needed after a disturbing, violent, and all too realistic episode that resulted in multiple deaths.

(Virginia Sherwood/Peacock) The Story About The Spezzano Family Took A Grisly Turn (And That’s A Good Thing)

Mob families are violent.

Law & Order: Organized Crime had to be careful when it was on network TV so that it didn’t run afoul of the rules, but even then, it depicted levels of violence usually reserved for cable-only or streaming series.

I Doubt Boston Blue Will Survive with Only Danny Reagan
Image
With so many things working against the new Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, I’m doubtful it will survive.

So far, Boston Blue is all about Danny Reagan, but the magic of Blue Bloods has always been in how the family survived this business together.

Blue Bloods was about the family business, while Boston Blue looks more like a traditional procedural format. Here is why I think that the lack of family and familiarity could hurt Boston Blue.

(CBS / Peter Kramer) CBS Has Its Work Cut Out For It With the Blue Bloods Spinoff

CBS has a big undertaking trying to spin off the beloved cop family procedural.

Spinning off new incarnations of shows like FBI or NCIS is rote by this point, but Blue Bloods has a different format. Sure, it follows cases like these other shows, but they also add real-life and personal issues.

Alert: Mpu’s “Two Dads” Gimmick & Nikki Erasure Proves It Has Lost the Plot (and Our Respect)
Image
By now, we can safely say that Alert: Missing Persons Unit isn’t just grappling with Nikki Batista’s death –it’s experiencing the series’ slow, painful unraveling.

What even is this show anymore?

Since the abrupt and bizarre decision to kill off Dania Ramirez’s Nikki, Alert: Mpu has seemed lost in another identity crisis. The unfortunate truth is that this time, it probably won’t recover.

(Sergei Bachlakov/Fox)

I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering why someone who hasn’t covered the series consistently for some time is still whining about it so much.

But it’s positively maddening how Alert: Mpu started with a relatively interesting premise (although it still pales compared to Found), and then opted to revamp it twice.

Perhaps I’m in the minority on this, but I enjoyed Alert: Mpu Season 1 in large part because of the familial element at...

The Feud Deepens and the Bodies Pile Up on Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 8

The feud between Raq and Unique heated up during Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 8, but their beef wasn’t even the most fascinating development from this hour.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 19 Jumped Back Into Meemaw’s Worst Story (But It Wasn’t Terrible)
Image
If Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage had to revisit the Meemaw gambling story, this was the way to do it.

Meemaw is a funny, dynamic character that deserves more than constantly running into trouble with her illegal casino, but Jim owing her money was comedy gold.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 19 turned the tables by having Jim be the one in debt instead of the one demanding money from Mandy, and it led to some funny moments.

(Michael Yarish/Warner Bros Entertainment Inc.) I Was So Thankful Mandy Called Jim Out On His Hypocrisy

The punchline in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 19 was obvious, but I still appreciated it.

Jim’s obnoxious behavior on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 18 centered around his anger that Mandy dared spend her money on herself instead of paying him rent.

Bobby Is Gone and No One Is Ready To Face It On 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16
Image
The death of Bobby Nash during 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15 was controversial at best.

There have been many reactions to his untimely death, which left the audience feeling very off-kilter. Bobby was the series constant and, for many, the very heartbeat of the series.

What does 9-1-1 look like without its leader? How do these characters whose lives were all intertwined with him move forward? Those were the questions the show was left to answer, and we saw the very start of those answers during 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16.

(Disney/Christopher Willard)

9-1-1 has always delivered when it comes to the overly emotional hours.

Whereas they could easily veer into the after-school special territory, 9-1-1 has a cavalcade of veteran actors who lend credence to everything asked of them, no matter how silly or intense.

And what you get in return are incredibly nuanced and emotionally rich hours like this one, even...

CBS’s Latest Risky Choice Won’t Curry Favor with Disgruntled Viewers
Image
It’s a tough time for fans of CBS series.

The Eye network is happily continuing with its schedule and renewal choices, and there’s very little to stop it from doing whatever pleases it because it remains the number one broadcast network.

Seriously, have you guys seen the rankings for broadcast networks? CBS dominates, with most of its series taking the coveted top slots in ratings, and ABC, NBC, and Fox aren’t coming close.

That may be why the network is confident — dare I say arrogant — about its choices and about securing another solid television season during 2025-2026 ar.

And you know what? I respect it. Far be it for me to tell a network with such high success what to do.

However, I am concerned that burning so many bridges with viewers will backfire in some capacity or another at some point.

Law & Order has showcased compelling cases throughout its three and a half decade run on the small screen.

The landmark procedural keeps things fresh and exciting by finding cases that resonate with viewers, and, of course, a functioning team that ebbs and flows.

TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at Law & Order Season 24 Episode 20, titled “The Sins of the Father.”

(Virginia Sherwood/NBC)

The highly anticipated installment finds Shawn and Riley springing into action “when a car mechanic is murdered execution-style.”

“As the trial gets underway for the arrested suspect, Baxter, Price, and Maroun are faced with who should answer for the crime.”

Actress and musician Andy Allo (“Upload”) has signed on to star in writer-producer-showrunner Mike Flynn’s upcoming limited series “The Eagles of Newark.” Anya Adams will direct the series, which comes from Alcon Television Group and is adapted from the non-fiction book “Queen of the Negro Leagues: Effa Manley and the Newark Eagles,” written by James Overmyer.

Allo will play Effa Manley, a trailblazing civil rights activist and the only woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. According to a press release, the series chronicles “the dramatic efforts of Effa and her husband Abe as they embark upon a risky business venture—starting their own ball club in the raucous world of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Effa Manley, in addition to serving as the team’s business manager, was a formidable social rights advocate whose impact extended far beyond baseball.”

Power Book III Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 7 Review: The Audacity Is at an All Time High
Image
Raq has ops Everywhere and has no one to blame but herself.

Even so, how she’s being accused of things she didn’t do left, right, and center is getting ridiculous.

Like Kanan driving by and seeing her paying off some cops during Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 7 means his mom killed Famous? Why everyone must jump from A to Z off vibes alone must be studied.

(Courtesy of Starz)

This whole season has revolved around hating Raq, and it’s the one thing she has been unable to escape. If anything, it’s somehow only gotten worse this season.

Kanan’s been slowly descending into an uncontrollable hatred, and Unique has been bathing in disdain since returning from the dead.

Tony Danza Channels His Inner Gangster in ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Sneak Peek [Exclusive]
Image
Lines are being drawn in the sand today in a Collider-exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming installment of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. This week will mark the fourth season’s seventh episode, “Allow Me to Re-Introduce Myself,” which pushes the story further into what we can only presume will be a vicious, drama-filled, and brutal climax as Patina Miller’s Raquel Thomas continues her journey to become the biggest and most feared name in the drug dealing game. While MeKai Curtis, who plays the show’s titular lead, is absent from our exclusive sneak peek, audiences are invited to pull up a chair and sit in on a brainstorming session between Raquel, London Brown’s Marvin, and Tony Danza’s Stefano.

In a pinstriped button-up with his long white hair falling behind his shoulders, Stefano (Danza) gives his allies a breakdown of their competition. Things aren’t looking...

The Real Unique Is Back on Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 6 — And He’s Coming for Everything
Image
He’s baccccck!

Well, we’ve known Unique was back since Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 3 Episode 10, but Raq didn’t.

She, and everybody but Early and a veterinarian, thought Unique was long gone, no longer a threat on the Southside. She and everyone thought wrong.

(Courtesy of Starz)

I was starting to worry about how long they would keep Unique hidden because there’s only so long you can hide in plain sight.

With each move Unique made, he was putting himself out there more and more, and at some point, somebody was going to see him and realize, “Damn, you look a lot like Unique.”

Unique would then open his mouth and make a quip about coming back from the dead, and the jig would be up.

SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 2 Recap: The Way Home’s Young Elliott Is Struck with Night Terrors!

Welcome back to our coverage of all things related to the Roman Ireland Agency.

People aren’t exactly gobbling up this content, so I’ll be playing with it along the way to see if I can find a sweet spot that makes writing about it worthwhile.

What’s happening on SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 2? I’m glad you asked.

Susan is selling Mitch’s house. She doesn’t tell him up front, but she was clearly looking for things in his house.

Then again, with as fast as he wanted to sell (Accepting the first offer? Red flag!), he was probably holding things back from her, too.

13 Power Universe Deaths That Left Us Shook to Our Core
Image
The Power Universe is still going strong, some ten years after the original Power debuted on Starz. And as you’re probably well aware, Power was known for its surprising and savage plot twists.

That’s the thing that put Power on the map in the first place.

You never knew what you were in store for each week, as the characters and their journeys took us on a dangerous ride through the world of drug dealing, causing us to understand early on that no one was safe.

(Courtesy of Starz)

Each iteration of Power has followed that same formula, and with high stakes, you can never assume that anyone will be safe.

In the real world, if you put yourself in dangerous situations, you’re liable to get burned.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 5 Is a Turning Point for Raq and Kanan
Image
When this hour started with a flashback to a young Famous and his family, I knew where this story was headed. And knowing that didn’t make it hurt any less.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 5 was all about people making moves, various moves to set them up in the future, but this is Power. Everything Will come to a head at some point.

And when it does, who will come out on top?

(Courtesy of Starz)

Raq’s partnership with Quan has been on shaky ground for a minute now, and Unique’s revenge plan has been damaging Raq from every angle.

With Terry sitting on her product and Quan showing her absolutely no respect, she knew she had to make a move, so she put everything into motion with Hafiz during Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 Episode 4.

Raq is a very perceptive person, and she...

SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 1 Plays It Safe, Saving Any New Roman Ireland Characters for Later
Image
Welcome back, SurrealEstate fans!

I know I skipped out on SurrealEstate Season 2, but life was different then. Now, I run the show, and we can do what we want! Score!

I wish SurrealEstate Season 3 Episode 1 had the same spirit. Somehow, it feels stuck in its sophomore season, unready to move on to new things.

If you’re like me, you felt a little out of sorts during the second season. Luke had lost his powers at the end of SurrealEstate Season 1, along with his dad, his earnest quest for his mom, and his new girlfriend, Megan.

As if that wasn’t enough, Susan got stuck in the spirit of her new home (or something like that), and she was Mia for most of it.

Michael Jackson Biopic Likely Splitting into Two Movies and Delaying Release Date
Image
Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” may be split into two movies. As a result, the Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International project will likely push its current Oct. 3 release date.

While “Michael” was a major part of last year’s Lionsgate CinemaCon presentation, no footage from the project was shown during this year’s outing. The film, produced by “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” Graham King, wrapped principal photography in May 2024, but John Logan’s script is in the process of being revised in advance of reshoots.

“Michael,” which carries a roughly $155 million budget, stars Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, who makes his screen debut in the film. Colman Domingo and Nia Long will play family heads Joe and Katherine Jackson, while Miles Teller will play Jackson’s attorney and advisor John Branca. Larenz Tate will star as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, while Laura Harrier will play portray pioneering...

From gritty dramas to hit movies -- is Starz right for you?
Image
With crime sagas like “Power” and blockbuster films, Starz packs a surprising punch.

I recently wrote about how Starz absolutely crushes gritty crime dramas like “Power”, “Bmf,” and “Hightown,” (you can check that article here). But the truth is, there’s way more to Starz than just street-level thrills and crime sagas. The streamer’s also got a huge lineup of original hits, fan-favorite movies, and plenty of content you might not even realize is included – all at a very competitive price for a premium streamer. If you’re wondering what exactly Starz is, how to get it, and whether it’s worth signing up for, here’s everything you need to know.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Star Explains Joyce's Tragic Season 4 Reveal
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4, Episode 3, "Bygones," which debuted Friday, March 21 on Starz.

Fans of the Starz original seriesPower are used to tragedy; the whole franchise is built on pain and angst. But Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4, Episode 3, "Bygones" was particularly emotional when Kanan's grandmother Joyce finally revealed to the rest of the family that she was diagnosed with cancer. Joyce has been a staple of the show since Season 1, so it's hard to think that Season 4 might be her last.

In an interview with Cbr, Joker: Folie a Deux actor Sharon Washington shared what she still loves about playing Joyce Thomas. She revealed her reaction to the cancer storyline -- and what it was like to actually play that massive moment. Plus, she discusses how the cancer battle may or may not change Joyce in the remainder of the season.
