"You know the recipe of all perfumes?" Madman Films in Australia has released their own official trailer for Perfumes, a French comedy from filmmaker Grégory Magne. This already opened in France back in 2020 and played in the US last year, but we're just catching up with it now and have never posted this trailer so far. Anne Walberg is a celebrity in the perfume world. She creates fragrances and sells her incredible talent to companies of all kinds. She lives as a diva, selfish, well-tempered. Guillaume is her new driver and the only one who is not afraid to stand up to her. Can they save her by working together? Emmanuelle Devos stars with Grégory Montel, Zélie Rhixon, Sergi López, Gustave Kervern, Pauline Moulène, and Lisa Perrio. This looks amusing with all the usual quirks that come with the perfume business - and all the strange smells. Almost like a light-hearted,...

With the Sydney market emerging from lockdown, the national box office got a 72 per cent boost last weekend, despite the absence of major new releases.
According to Numero the top 20 films tallied $3.1 million, up from the previous weekend’s $1.8 million, a record low for the year.
All cinemas in Nsw can now open at 75 per cent capacity or one person per four square metres; whichever is larger. However, the market is not back to full health as yet, with indoor seated entertainment venues in Melbourne still closed and will remain so until the state reaches an 80 per cent vaccination rate. Southern Tasmania also entered a three-day lockdown on Friday, and cinemas remain closed in the Act.
However, the weekend’s improved result indicates there is some pent-up demand to return to the cinemas, a positive sign ahead of larger scale releases re-entering the market from this Thursday, starting with Warner Bros....

We’ll probably spend the next decade or so speculating on the impact certain films might have made had they not been released in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. One movie that could have had a bigger splash was “The Water Man” (Rlje Films), David Oyelowo’s impressive directorial debut. It’s a rousing kid adventure and a poignant family tale, and he very skillfully threads the needle between those two genres. Like many an actor-turned-director before him, Oyelowo displays a sure hand with the fine ensemble he’s assembled, including young actors Lonnie Chavis and Amiah Miller and veterans Rosario Dawson, Alfred Molina and Maria Bello.
Also available: The Criterion Collection continues to preserve the best Netflix originals to physical media, the latest being the intense “Beasts of No Nation,” starring Abraham Attah and Idris Elba in an appropriately brutal tale of child soldiers; “Overwhelm the...

Despite school holidays, last weekend proved relatively quiet at the movies, with cinemas still shut in Sydney and other parts of the country.
Theatres will remain closed in Australia’s largest city and its surrounds, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour, until at least July 9.
Capacity restrictions remain in place and masks are compulsory in cinemas in the rest of Nsw, as well as several other states.
Cinemas in Western Australia’s Perth and Peel, as well as Darwin and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, were also closed for part of the weekend, reopening on Saturday. Lockdown restrictions in parts of regional Queensland ended on Friday, followed by Brisbane on Saturday evening.
As such, the top 20 titles tallied just $6.8 million, down 25 per cent on the previous, according to Numero.

“Les Parfums,” a romantic comedy-drama starring Emmanuelle Devos (“Read My Lips”) and Grégory Montel (“Call My Agent!”), has been acquired by Distrib Films for U.S. distribution. Global rights for the film are handled by Pyramide Films International.
The film, directed by Gregory Magne, tells the story of Anne Walberg, a celebrity in the world of fragrance, whose professional success has turned her into a quick-tempered diva. Guillaume, her new chauffeur who is freshly divorced, is the only person who is unafraid of her.
“It’s a very elegant, tender and bittersweet film with two actors who seem very inspired by their respective role,” said François Scippa Kohn, founder of New York-based Distrib Films. The executive said he was planning to release the movie in virtual cinemas during the first quarter of this year since movie theaters are closed and there is “no real perspective about their reopening.”

Korean hit #Alive kicked up another $2.2M this weekend, holding well throughout the mid-weeks, but with an overall 63% Friday-Saturday-Sunday dip from the comparable weekend days last session. The timely thriller that’s set against the backdrop of a city in lockdown due to a virus has now grossed $11M. It’s a continued indication that moviegoers want something new, and in cases of a strong local industry, they’re also enjoying homegrown fare. Still, not much is going to rock the international box office until Hollywood starts releasing fresh titles.
A question has been raised as to whether the studios could release big new movies overseas without the biggest domestic cities given the situation in the U.S. is still dire. While international makes up the lion’s share of receipts (73% in 2019), a finance source explains that an event picture generally goes out on more than 30,000 screens worldwide — those screens are hardly available at present.
