The actor playing the policeman also absconded in Germany after shooting had finished. In real life this actor is also a goldsmith. He disappeared on the last day and never turned up to the bus, or the airport. One of the other actors this guy was closest to had been warned in advance that he was going to hook it. He had been picked up in a car by relatives. A few months later he had made it to London from Germany without a passport and was doing rather well as a goldsmith.
The inspiration came from the actual case of the 2004 incident, where a fake Sri Lankan national handball team tricked its way into a German tournament, lost all of their matches, and subsequently vanished.
There are two scenes cut from the international release and the TV broadcasts. First one is early in the movie, Manoj is nervously waiting at the embassy gate because Stanley is late. He finally arrives, grinning, as if it's no big deal. The second cut scene is when Manoj's family is having dinner at the fancy restaurant where he works. Two British guys notice them, see how out of place they look at the expensive restaurant, and one says to the other "Looks like someone won the lottery."
Machan means 'brother-in-law' in Tamil language. It may also mean 'friend' in both Sinhala and Tamil slang.
