CBS is taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook by announcing its programming success in the billions of minutes watched.
If you were wondering what that might mean to a broadcast network, it measures out to 456 billion minutes of CBS programming watched in the first four months of 2024.
With two new hits on its hands — Tracker and Elsbeth — this doesn’t surprise us in the least.
Here’s the real measure of their success, though.
Viewers delivered over 30% more time spent in front of CBS programming than Netflix and over 231% more than all other streamers combined.
No wonder they’re patting themselves on the back.
Those are incredible numbers that often go unnoticed when you use traditional ratings tools to deliver the news.
Even crazier, the time spent watching CBS programming has increased by 5.8% over the same period in 2023.
People often wonder how shows can be considered a success...

Michael Shiakallis has been spilling a lot of Married at First Sight tea since the season ended and most recently he shared another bit of information about how he got on the show.
The Season 17 star confessed that he didn’t initially sign up for the marital experiment, but was recruited on social media.
That’s how he learned about filming for the new season and how his journey began.
Things took an unexpectedly rocky turn for Michael early into the process when he became a part of a historic moment.
His first bride — still a mystery to us all — refused to walk down the aisle, marking the first time a groom was left jilted at the altar.
It was also the first time a participant was given a second chance with a replacement bride — Chloe Brown later in the season — but let’s get to how it all started for the 38-year-old.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem delivered its second straight No. 1 showing among streaming titles, leading the rankings for the last week of March. The acquired series top 10 had several new entrants, thanks in part to a change in how Nielsen reports the numbers.
The ratings service says it made an “enhancement” to its Streaming Content Ratings, which is the basis for the weekly top 10 lists, that results in a number of programs being added to the Scr product. (They weren’t previously “due to business agreements which preceded the rankings, coupled with the associated technical aspects of measurement.”) The affected programs stream mostly on Hulu and Peacock after airing on linear networks.
The upshot is that former Fox series The Resident (1.48 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix) and animated mainstays Family Guy (837 million minutes on Hulu) and American Dad (619 million on Hulu) all made their first appearance in the top...

Netflix‘s earnings report for the first quarter of 2024 included some encouraging numbers, but a warner about the future caused the streamer’s stock price to decline. Netflix shares fell by as much as 8% after the company revealed that it would discontinue its practice of sharing quarterly subscriber gains.
Let’s start with the good news: Q1 2024 turned out pretty well for Netflix. Thanks to its global slate of originals, which included Q1 releases like Love Is Blind season six (pictured above), the streamer hit $9.33 billion in sales, while net income grew to $2.33 billion. Both of those numbers exceeded analyst projections.
Netflix’s subscriber numbers are also looking healthy. 9.33 million customers signed up for accounts during the first quarter; in comparison, analyst estimates for Netflix’s Q1 subscriber gain averaged out to 4.84 million customers, so the actual number was nearly twice as big as projections.

Netflix reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it added a whopping 9.33 million paid subscribers.
Analysts consensus estimates were for Netflix to add 3.93 million paid subs globally in Q1 (to reach 264.21 million), according to StreetAccount. Per Netflix, it has now climbed to 269.60 million subs as of March 31.
These impressive Q1 results come following a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers added for the fourth quarter of 2023, which was a Q4 record for Netflix. Despite this back-to-back growth worth boasting about, Netflix announced Thursday it will stop reporting quarterly sub totals beginning in 2025, a move that is sure to shock an industry that has been fueled by the battle for streaming subscribers for years.
The Q1 2024 lineup that fueled Netflix’s sub growth included its live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the “Game of Thrones” creator’s sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman,” the latest season of “Love Is Blind,...

Love is blind — or is it?
Netflix had an absolute smash hit on its hands from the moment Love Is Blind Season 1 premiered.
From its impeccable set design, down-to-earth hosts, and a relatable cast with a flair for drama, the show has it all.
At least, that's what it seems.
While its massive fan base is undeniable, it's hard to overlook the fact that a glaringly large portion of the population is unrepresented on Love Is Blind.
The concept of this reality dating series is that looks shouldn't matter when finding a partner to spend your life with. At least, that's what they tell us.
But as much as they tout that premise, they still happily and exclusively cast conventionally attractive, thin, and mostly white participants.
The producers also haven't explored opening up the series to include the LGBTQ+ community, a move that other similar shows have found successful.

Once again, TV usage was down in March with broadcast TV receiving the smallest percentage among the primary viewing categories.
Broadcast TV saw a 6% usage decline from February to March, accounting for just 22.5% of viewing. Year-over-year, broadcast viewing has fallen 4%, according to Nielsen’s monthly report, The Gauge.
On a yearly basis, cable viewing saw the largest usage decline at 10%. However, it remained resilient at 283.% of viewing thanks in part to March Madness. Sports cable viewing was up 43% in the month of March, according to Nielsen, which also notes that the women’s NCAA tournament had a larger impact on viewership than it usually does.
The State of the Union also gave cable a boost, since 32.2M viewers tuned into that March 7 event.

If there's one thing more popular than true crime documentaries on Netflix, it's surely reality shows. The streamer has churned out a string of highly successful reality series, from "Love is Blind" to the controversial "Squid Game" reality show that was criticized for alleged "inhumane" conditions on the set. Now, the streamer has debuted its latest unorthodox take on the reality format with "Unlocked: A Jail Experiment," and it's another pretty controversial (and hugely popular) one from Netflix.
The show chronicles Arkansas sheriff Eric Higgins' radical approach to changing the conditions in Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility in Little Rock, Arkansas. That is to say that Higgins essentially handed over one unit of the county jail to its inmates. According to Tudum, "Unlocked: A Jail Experiment" is "an eight-episode exploration of what happens when unit cells are unlocked for six weeks, and detainees create community and structure for themselves." What could possibly go wrong?...

Megan Fox is finally addressing the Love Is Blind controversy involving Season 6 cast member Chelsea Blackwell. After Blackwell told then-boyfriend Jimmy Presnell that Fox was her celebrity doppelgänger, Blackwell received a barrage of hate from online critics about the comparison. Fox is now stepping up and defending Blackwell. “I didn’t watch it, but I think in general, no one deserves to get bullied,” Fox told E! News. “I don’t think she deserved that. I think people went way too hard. I did see a picture of her. A hundred thousand percent, people have told her, ‘You kind of look like Megan Fox.'” She added, “I believe she’s telling the truth and I hope like she still has that sparkle in her eye. I hope the world didn’t steal it from her. Mine died long ago from being bullied for 20 years. So I hope that didn’t happen to her.

Megan Fox finally weighed in on the “Love Is Blind” controversy that erupted earlier this year when Season 6 cast member Chelsea Blackwell told her eventual fiancé Jimmy Presnell that Fox was her celebrity doppelgänger. Presnell ended up telling Blackwell that wasn’t true, while “Love Is Blind” viewers bombarded social media platforms to roast and mock Blackwell for a comparison many thought wasn’t accurate.
“I’ve never had more people text me about something,” Fox told E! News’ “The Rundown.” “I don’t really watch TV very much. But I’ve had a lot of people text me and stop me. Even other celebrities at like Oscar parties were like, ‘Do you watch “Love is Blind”?’ And I was like, ‘No, but I know what you’re talking about.'”

When a streaming service has so much to offer it can be overwhelming, and instead of hunkering down with your popcorn for a movie night in, you end up scrolling in every direction, ultimately giving up in favor of another comfort episode of The Office. But now, The Criterion Channel is going to decide what you watch. No, it’s not some sort of spin-the-wheel-and-make-a-deal but rather a continuously running stream of movies from their catalog. That’s right, they’re making good on the “channel” part.
The streaming service, which launched in April 2019, sent an email to coincide with their fifth anniversary, which read: “Don’t know what to watch? Let us choose! Love Is Blind held onto its reign atop Nielsen’s streaming charts for the first full week in March.
From March 4 to 10, the series racked up 1.5B minutes viewed. That’s thanks to the Season 6 reunion episode released on March 6, which Nielsen says tallied a more than a third of that viewing. The reunion saw half of its viewership concentrated on the day it was released — a pretty impressive feat for any streamer.
Netflix’s reality series was joined in the top three by two more of the streamer’s originals. Damsel stormed up the charts to No. 2 after its March 8 release with 1.2B viewing minutes, while The Gentlemen managed 1.2B minutes across its eight episodes following its March 7 debut.
Nielsen reports The Gentlemen attracted a slightly older audience, with half of its viewership coming from the 50+ demographic.

Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen opened with a bang on Netflix.
The series, a spinoff of Ritchie’s 2019 film, delivered almost 1.21 billion minutes of viewing over its first four days (it premiered March 7), according to Nielsen’s streaming rankings for March 4-10. It ranked second among all streaming series for the week, behind Love Is Blind (1.5 billion minutes), which repeated as the top overall title.
Netflix also got a big first week for Millie Bobby Brown’s movie Damsel, which edged The Gentlemen for second place overall: Damsel had 1.209 billion minutes of viewing to 1.205 billion for The Gentlemen. Two other shows also topped the billion-minute mark — Bluey (1.1 billion on Disney+) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.04 billion on Netflix and Peacock).
After a huge opening and a strong second week, Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender fell by about 51 percent to 950 million minutes, still good for sixth place overall and third among original series.

“Love Is Blind” has spent four weeks on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 fueled by the episodic release of its sixth season, and had its second No. 1 week in a row between March 4 and March 10. The reality dating series was watched for 1.5 billion minutes during this viewing window, which included the release of the Season 6’s climactic twelfth episode.
Though that 1.5 billion minutes includes viewership of all seasons of the reality dating series during the week, Nielsen says that over one third of the tally was attributable to the wedding episode, which itself saw half of its viewership on the exact day of its release. Though Netflix is known for its binge releases, “Love Is Blind” is undeniable evidence of the potential for success with segmented drops.
In second place was a movie: Netflix’s “Damsel,” starring Millie Bobby Brown, which debuted with 1.2 billion minutes watched in its first three days of availability.

When “Vanderpump Rules” first premiered on Bravo in 2013, the premise was simple: a selected cast of chaos-makers from Lisa Vanderpump’s restaurant staff at Sur navigated Los Angeles in their twenties. While the base of the series pulled from past reality television renegades like “The Hills,” it proved to be an entirely different ballgame due to the unabashed narcissism and web of relationships present in the cast.

With current discussion in Hollywood about artificial intelligence kicking way up, including what it can and can’t do, and the ways it may change how actors work, IndieWire asked King how shaving her head helped her performances. Specifically, if potentially not having to do so in the future, thanks to technological advances, appealed to her or would it change something about how the actress preps.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” dropped to the No. 2 position on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for Feb. 26-March 3 after debuting on top the week before. During its second week on the chart — its first full week of availability on Netflix — the series was watched for 1.9 billion minutes, a 25% decrease from the prior week’s 2.6 billion minutes.
Comparing last week’s Nielsen chart to Netflix’s own data suggested that “Avatar” had a more successful debut in the U.S. than in other territories. However, both companies’ Top 10s show that the series didn’t have the same staying power as other big-budget Netflix projects, which tend to increase in viewership from their opening weekends to their first full weeks of availability.
The show did drive renewed interest in the “Avatar” IP, however: Per Nielsen, the animated Nickelodeon series that inspired Netflix’s outing saw a viewership bump during the week of Feb.
Comparing last week’s Nielsen chart to Netflix’s own data suggested that “Avatar” had a more successful debut in the U.S. than in other territories. Love Is Blind eclipsed Avatar: The Last Airbender to take No. 1 on the Nielsen streaming charts as Season 6 of the reality dating series started to heat up.
From February 19 to 25, Love Is Blind tallied 2.1B viewing minutes, which was slightly down from the week prior but enough to claim the top spot. This coincided with the release of the second batch of episodes in Season 6, which dropped on Netflix on February 21.
Meanwhile The Last Airbender saw a bit more of a dramatic drop in viewership versus its first week on the platform. The eight-episode series still tallied an impressive 1.9B viewing minutes, though.
This kind of dip in viewership is to be expected, since all eight episodes were released at once. Audiences tend to binge quickly and move on, rather than space out their viewing — unless they’re forced to with a staggered release schedule, like with Love Is Blind.

Recently, Amazon Prime introduced a new series that promises to be full of laughs, drama, and adventures. In The Goat, previous relative stars from multiple shows will compete for the title of “Greatest Of All Time Reality TV Star.”
Goat Coming To Prime
Markedly, Prime Video is bringing a new series that will crown The Goat Reality TV star. Notably, it looks like the crossover that reality TV has been missing. Coupled with challenges and alliances, the host Daniel Tosh jokes the contestants will have to put their “strength and lack of life skills” to the test to face off for the title. Undeniably, the show is packed with a reality star-studded cast from The Bachelor, Love Is Blind, Big Brother, Real Housewives, and many more popular shows. Each of the fourteen contestants will compete to be named the best reality star and of course, walk away with a $200,000 prize.
