The third edition of the Red Sea Souk, the market arm of the Red Sea Film Festival, awarded its top prize of $100,000 to “The Return of the Prodigal Son” by Rani Massalha. Another eight feature projects and two TV series were awarded cash and in-kind prizes as part of the Red Souk Awards.
Massalha’s film, a co-production between Egypt, Tunisia and France, tells the story of Salem, a pig farmer in Egypt who is a Copt — a native Christian community in the country, often persecuted — amidst a breakout of the swine flu in 2009 that sends Egypt into a spiral of psychosis, leading the Mubarak government to pass a law to slaughter all the pigs.
In a statement, the writer-director said: “The pigs of Egypt were ‘sacrificed’ under political pressure and hysterical media coverage organized by the Muslim Brotherhood, crystalizing the structural violence of Egyptian social relations between communities.”

Palestinian-French actress Hiam Abbass and her filmmaker daughter Lina Soualem touch down at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday with documentary Bye Bye Tiberias.

Abbass’s near-100 credits have included Tunisian drama Red Satin, Moroccan hit Rock The Casbah, Israeli productions The Syrian Bride and Lemon Tree; Syria civil war-set Insyriated, Palestinian dramas Degradé and Gaza Mon Amour as well as parts in Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Jim Jarmusch’s The Limits Of Control.

The astronauts in “For All Mankind” are icons of their world. In this branch of the Space Race multiverse, where the battle for supremacy beyond the atmosphere is the stuff of headlines and not 50th anniversary specials, the two Cold War powers operate like the bygone studio system. People in restrictive contracts, marketing stars to gin up extra publicity, culture-rocking events that have massive geopolitical ramifications, and extreme burnout on a grand scale.
Now in Season 3, the astronauts who made up the initial space program have each taken on their own kind of mythical status. Those who have died sacrificial deaths have been memorialized. Some who are still living have become infamous departmental legends and others have become even more prominent national figures. Over the show’s nearly three decades of story, the early Apollo astronauts have become not just household names but monumental figures of public life.

Roku and Apollo Global Management have teamed up to bid for a minority stake in Starz, Deadline has confirmed.
A person familiar with the situation said a first round of bids was several weeks ago and interested parties were just starting to get access to Starz data. Others are in the mix as well, with interested parties said to include DirecTV, and the process is going rather slowly.
Lionsgate announced last fall it was exploring strategic options for the cable network and streamer, effectively putting it on the block. The company run by Jon Feltheimer acquired Starz for 4.4 billion in 2016. But the combined company now has a market cap of just over 3 billion. Selling all or a part of the asset could unlock value.
That’s been especially true given the big multiples paid for content, including Amazon’s 8.45 billion acquisition of MGM.

The beauty of Ivory, Omar Apollo’s magnetic full-length debut, is that even through complex production choices and rich sonic flourishes, it always feels effortless. The LP is a bountiful trove of genres and technique; crack it open and sharp guitar licks, celestial harmonies, aching soul melodies, and even touches of ranchera come tumbling out. Even when the album is splaying out in multiple directions, Apollo’s sense of maturity grounds the project, and the songs stay playful yet tender, free yet focused. Across all the terrain it covers, a central message shines through,...

This week marked the release of “Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood,” Richard Linklater’s new film about growing up in Houston in the shadow of the Apollo Space Program in the late 1960s. While the movie was inspired by Linklater’s own childhood, he is not the only member of the film’s team to have a personal connection to the material.
Jack Black, who narrates the film as the grown-up version of the main character, is the son of two aerospace engineers. His mother, Judith Love Cohen, famously worked on projects like the Hubble Space Telescope and was involved with the Apollo program. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight to promote the film, Black opened up about his mother’s legendary career and how it inspired his performance. Growing up in the NASA hub of Houston, Richard Linklater remembers the pervasive impact the first moon landing had on his childhood. He fuses those memories with fantasy in his new movie, the animated “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood” (currently streaming on Netflix).
Linklater even likens it to a cinematic scrapbook: It’s both a nostalgic snapshot of the ordinary suburban childhood he experienced and the extraordinary scientific achievement he witnessed. In fact, he describes it as “A Portrait of a Free Range Childhood,” in which his alter ego, fourth grader Stan, fantasizes about making his own secret trip to the moon.
“Getting to do this was wonderful in a ‘You Are There’ realism,” Linklater said, referring to the Walter Cronkite-hosted educational TV series about American history. “It was a significant moment in time that will be remembered forever: when humans first left the atmosphere of their...

With the Oscars in the rearview, it’s time to turn our sights to some fresh content. Or, in the case of Netflix’s April slate, old content that suddenly feels pretty fresh when stacked up next to titles like “The Power of the Dog” and “Don’t Look Up,” which by this point have worn out their welcome.
While Judd Apatow fans will be flocking to the streamer for the release of his pandemic-themed ensemble comedy “The Bubble,” there are alternatives for those who aren’t quite ready to laugh at the events of the past two years — especially in the context of a Hollywood movie set facing down Covid-19 protocols and CGI-driven hijinks.
That film drops April 1, but another high-profile premiere from an American filmmaker also lands on Netflix: ” Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood,” Texas auteur Richard Linklater’s first return to animation since 2006’s “A Scanner Darkly.

It’s been 16 years since Richard Linklater last made a film in the art style he helped popularize with movies like Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006). At the time, he thought he’d taken the rotoscope technique—where animators draw artwork, frame by frame, atop live-action footage—as far as he personally could with a film that featured Keanu Reeves losing his grip and perception on reality.
And yet, when thinking back to his own halcyon days as a child growing up in the Houston suburbs during a time of technological innovation and wonders—the time of the Apollo 11 mission and when a man walked on the moon—he realized his own nine-year-old understanding of the world wasn’t that different from, say, Keanu’s dream life. And exploring that paradox is what gives his ultimately semi-autobiographical reverie, this weekend’s Netflix release of Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood,...

Pheelz is perhaps best known as the Nigerian producer who’s contributed to notable releases like Fireboy Dml’s Apollo, Olamide’s Carpe Diem, and Tiwa Savage’s Celia. But he worked both the boards and the mic on his latest single, “Finesse.” He floats across the slinky beat, built around gentle guitar, subtle drum rolls, and other delicate percussion; so does his guest Bnxn, the artist formerly known as Buju.
Bnxn, a 24-year-old singer, adds “Finesse” to the more than two dozen features he’s racked up (including Wizkid’s “Mood”) since his 2018 debut.

A delightful meditation on childhood in the summer of 1969 set literally in the shadows of NASA’s central operations in Houston, Richard Linklater’s contemplative and vividly animated Apollo 10 ½ A Space Age Childhood reflects on the filmmaker’s own experiences. It captures the joy and wonder of childhood through the eyes of Stan, a ten-year-old who fantasizes about being recruited for “space camp” by NASA. His father (Bill Wise), a frugal but caring man, has uprooted his family from the city to a newly built suburban development in the shadow of the Astrodome and Astroworld amusement parks. Black’s adult narrator fills in the blanks for us with whimsical, nostalgic details that highlight just how dangerous childhood can be between abusive coaches, parents that thought nothing of allowing the kids to ride in the back of a pick-up truck at 70 miles an hour, and playing with explosives.

Richard Linklater’s periodic forays into animation have been distinctively imaginative, and that goes double for Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood. A nostalgic but not in the least sentimental look at Texas life when the American space program was at full thrust, this highly personal but entirely accessible account of growing up in a culture both historically momentous and banal has something to offer all audiences in terms of its vivid portrait of a very specific place and time. But most receptive of all will be viewers in their 60s and beyond who have personal memories of the July 20, 1969, moon landing and of a milieu both memorable and banal.
Linklater calls this project “a memory of a fantasy” as well as a mixture of fantasy and reality, and everyone who was around at the time will certainly have their own recollections of that unique...

Combining elements of “Boyhood” and his animated films like “A Scanner Darkly” and “Waking Life” with frequent collaborators like Jack Black and Glen Powell (“Everybody Wants Some!!”), Richard Linklater has returned with “Apollo 10 1/2.” The new film makes its debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival this week before hitting Netflix on April 1.
The film is set in Houston, Texas, in the summer of 1969 and is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the moon landing. Linklater grew up in the shadow of NASA and said he was inspired to make the film while contemplating his own childhood during the making of “Boyhood.”
“‘Boyhood’ is about the minutiae of life. ‘Apollo’ is about minutiae as well, but it’s also about probably the biggest and grandest thing people have ever accomplished,” Linklater told Indiewire. “But this very much grew out of ‘Boyhood.’ I started ‘Boyhood’ thinking, ‘Oh,...

"This is a covert operation - that means it does not exist. No one can know about this." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the new Richard Linklater film, based on his own childhood, titled in full Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure. This one is premiering at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival coming up in a few weeks, then will be available on Netflix to watch at the beginning of April. A coming-of-age story set in the suburbs of Houston, Texas during the summer of '69, centered around the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Presented as a rotoscope animation film, just like Linklater's A Scanner Darkly and Waking Life previously. The story follows a kid growing up in Texas who is recruited by NASA to help test an accidentally-smaller-than-planned lunar lander module, though that just seems to be his over-active imagination. Apollo 10½ stars Milo Coy, Lee Eddy, Bill Wise,...

When Nigerian musician Fireboy Dml thinks of his earliest influences, a few names come to mind. There was Passenger, the English folk/indie band turned solo artist, that led him to fall in love with American artist Jon Bellion. Then there was the legendary Afrobeats star Wande Coal whose intentional lyricism within the contemporary scene shaped how he approaches songwriting. But most notably, there was Ed Sheeran, whose songs inspired Fireboy to learn how to play the acoustic guitar, an instrument that, many years on, has remained a core part of his sound.

“Oslo” tells the story behind the iconic photo of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasir Arafat shaking hands on the White House lawn in 1993. The new TV movie from HBO dramatizes the top-secret negotiations that led to the historic Oslo Accords, a milestone in the ever-winding road to peace in the Middle East.
The movie is an adaptation of J.T. Rogers’s Tony-winning play of the same name, which centers on the Norweigan couple who brought representatives from Israel and Palestine together for the back-channel meetings that would eventually culminate in the signing of the Oslo Accords, the first formal mutual recognition between Israel and the Plo.
As with any based-on-a-true-story flick, the subjects’ lives are much fuller than a two-hour narrative can afford to flesh out. Before you stream “Oslo,” read up on some of the real people behind the historical drama.

After 10 consecutive days of violence, the renewed Israeli-Palestinian conflict is already considered the worst clash since 2014. For a film community known to be fiercely opposed to the politics led by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers and producers fear the escalation of violence will cause irreparable damage. There have been countless fallouts between Israelis and Palestinians in the region over the last 70 years, but industry executives indicate that the proliferation of social media is taking commentary on the conflict to unprecedented levels.
“Today, because of social media, hatred is spreading much quicker. This is a nightmare, and it will affect relationships in the medium to long term,” predicts Rani Massalha, the Paris-based French-Palestinian producer of Tarzan and Arab Nasser’s “Gaza Mon Amour” which opened at Venice and represented Palestine in the Oscar race this year.

The dancer also appeared in classic films like “Carousel”
Jacques d’Amboise, a famed dancer and choreographer with the New York City Ballet who also appeared in classic musical films such as “Carousel” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” has died. He was 86.
His daughter and dancer Charlotte d’Amboise told The New York Times he died Sunday at his home in Manhattan after a stroke.
At just 15 years old, d’Amboise left school and was recruited by the New York City Ballet, quickly becoming one of the stars of the company and helping to erase stereotypes about male ballet dancers with both his elegance and masculinity on stage.
By 1953, he was named principal dancer and had 24 roles by George Balanchine, including the seminal “Apollo.” He retired from the company just ahead of his 50th birthday in 1984, but he would continue to choreograph routines, including 17 works for the City Ballet and others for the National Dance Institute.

Washington, Feb 1 (Ians) NASA has quietly delayed its plan to award two high-profile crewed lunar lander contracts from late February to April 30.
According to the space agency, the delay is designed to give it more time to evaluate the bidders' proposals and to "preserve the ability to seamlessly transition" from the development phase, but it may not need the full extension period and could award the lander contracts earlier.
The extension also gives the companies more time to design and develop their lander systems, NASA said.
Elon Musk's SpaceX, a team of aerospace giants led by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Leidos-owned Dynetics won a combined $967 million in seed funding from NASA last year to develop rival concepts for a human lunar landing system, The Verge reported on Sunday.

Although this year’s Middle Eastern/North African Oscar submissions have yet to generate a strong buzz, there are titles among the 10 films that could be contenders for the international feature short list.
Chief among them is “Sun Children” from veteran Iranian helmer Majid Majidi, whose 1997 “Children of Heaven” landed a foreign-language film nomination. This gripping drama about exploited urban street kids is cast with charismatic, non-pro performers and earned an acting award at the Venice fest for its resilient young protagonist. Strand Films will release.
A possible dark horse is “Broken Keys,” the feature debut of Lebanese multi-hyphenate Jimmy Keyrouz. It marks an expansion of his 2016 Student Academy Award-winner “Nocturne in Black” about a musician in a Syrian town controlled by Isis. Sporting the Cannes Label, this tense drama, with a score by Keyrouz’s famous compatriot Gabriel Yared, shares the combination of real-life crisis and sweeping emotion that characterizes some past nominees.
