Last year, Anna Kendrick starred in Mary Nighy’s disquieting drama of abuse Alice, Darling. The actress played a woman undone by her partner’s psychological manipulations, pulling from her own experiences in an abusive relationship to shape the character. Her performance — sensitive, gripping — sustained the film’s atmosphere of dread.
In Woman of the Hour, Kendrick builds on the work she started in Alice, Darling — but now she is also behind the camera for this unnerving dramatization of serial killer Rodney Alcala’s appearance on a dating game show while in the midst of his murder spree. Woman of the Hour, which premiered at TIFF before its Netflix acquisition, is an ambitious attempt to subvert true-crime genre expectations by giving voice to the survivors and victims of Alcala’s rampage.
The film experiments with time jumps and perspective shifts to create an impressionistic portrait of the murders. Its action kicks off in 1977 with Rodney,...

Actor makes directorial debut with the frightening fact-based tale of a woman on a 1970s dating show who meets a serial killer
At last year’s Toronto film festival, Anna Kendrick played a woman crumbling within an emotionally abusive relationship in Alice, Darling, an unsettling psychodrama that proved revelatory for the star, typically associated with lighter fare. At the time she spoke about her uncomfortable connection to the material, having once been at the mercy of a controlling, noxious boyfriend, and there’s a similarly specific unease to her follow-up, the fact-based thriller Woman of the Hour, a film also focused on how the oppressiveness of gender dynamics can lead to horror.
This time, the horror is of a more tangible and gruesome kind, shown to us in short sharp bursts, flashbacks to the killings of Rodney Alcala, a charming photographer who preyed on women and young girls in the 1970s.

The studio achieved an 11.9% industry share for the first half of 2023. That is a record for the studio in terms of market share. It’s fair to say that perhaps no film has shown a more graphic depiction of the dismemberment of Nazis than Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds.” But the Finnish movie “Sisu,” which debuted in theaters on April 28, will certainly give Tarantino’s film a run for its money.
“Sisu” follows the story of Aatami Korpi, a Finnish gold prospector trying to survive the Lapland War in 1944. He strikes it rich — or so he thinks — until he attempts to bring his newfound gold to market. When he is intercepted by members of the brutal and terrifying SS, Korpi must decide whether to surrender his treasure or fight for it.
The movie has been declared a romping good time on Rotten Tomatoes, where 94% of critics gave it an approving review. Viewers have given special praise to the trim narrative, which doesn’t get in the way of what audiences truly came to see: a gory spectacle.

A new study by UCLA Center for Scholars & Storytellers shows systemic discrimination and limited access to opportunities exist against first-time directors, with only 23.4% working on major feature films in the last 12 years.
Commissioned by Lionsgate and its commitment to the inclusive content space, the study examines some of the persistent biases hindering the industry’s progress toward achieving its stated diversity and inclusion goals.
Compiled from a list of the top 100 films per year from 2010-2021 (based on domestic box office for each year; 1200 films total), the study also shows that while more women and people of color have been hired as directors recently, the rate of overall hiring in the experienced director pool continues.

March is sort of a weird, in-between period in the moviegoing calendar. With Oscars season thankfully behind us but the summer blockbuster season not quite in gear just yet, we're left with an odd mix of theatrical offerings: a handful of immensely successful franchise sequels, some notable bombs, and possibly some reason to hope. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there wasn't much else worth your time throughout the last few weeks. It just takes a little bit of digging to fully appreciate the hidden gems.

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” (Universal/$19.99), his final film at the studio before moving to Warner Bros. Discovery , was #1 on all VOD charts in its first week in release. This comes, as usual for Universal titles, after its third weekend in theaters. By contrast, the director’s 2021 “Old” waited more than two months.
It held off a challenge from “The Whale” (A24/$19.99), which took second place at iTunes and Vudu, and #4 at Google Play. Darren Aronofsky’s film, fresh off Brendan Fraser’s SAG Best Actor award, spent more than two months as a theatrical exclusive.
Four Universal titles took 12 of the 30 possible slots this week, or 40 percent. All were released after their third weekend of wide release; all but “The Fabelmans” remain at the premium $19.99 price. “Puss in the Boots: The Last Wish” is second or third on all charts and “M3GAN” (with an unrated version...

It took a price reduction, but Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” (Universal/$5.99) is finally getting some significant viewing. With it down to standard VOD cost ($5.99) rather than its initial home viewing cost of $19.99, it is listed on the three charts below for the first time. And it got above #4 anywhere, hitting #1 on iTunes.
The film has been a major box office disappointment, with only $17 million in domestic grosses and $30 million worldwide with virtually all its take already in. That makes its performance as a home revenue asset that much more important.
Its low level of theatrical interest suggested that it might be a challenge to reach viewers willing to pay its initial premium cost. But it is now at a price where its awards attention, strong reviews, and of course Spielberg’s reputation have all boosted it as expected.

Studios that utilized theaters to boost PVOD prospects saw their efforts pay off this week. The 19.99 “Plane” (Lionsgate) and “M3GAN” (Universal) lead the VOD charts, followed by Christmas titles “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/24.99) and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (Sony/19.99). With studios recouping 14 or more from each transaction, that’s a bonanza — especially with three of those films still in the box office top 10. Synergy at last!
“Plane” is #1 on iTunes and Vudu, #2 on Google Play, with the order reversed for “M3GAN.” “Puss” is #3 on Google Play, fourth on the others. “Whitney,” new this week, is #3 on Vudu and #7 on iTunes. Actress Anna Kendrick says the opportunity to work with writer/director Edgar Wright is what drew her to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Though a box office bomb, the film has gained a cult following since its release in 2010 mostly due to its highly stylized special effects. Kendrick, however, wasn’t at all sure the film would work on screen when she read the script.
What is ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ about?
Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (which is currently available on Netflix) follows Michael Cera’s Scott on his mission to battle the seven evil ex-boyfriends of his crush, Romona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Meanwhile, he is also playing with his band in an epic Battle of the Bands, warding off his ex-girlfriend (played by Ellen Wong) who he hasn’t quite broken up with yet, and maintaining his slacker cool all the while.

In "Alice, Darling," Academy Award-nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") plays Alice, a woman dealing with a psychologically abusive boyfriend named Simon (Charlie Carrick). Lionsgate is by no means the biggest studio in Hollywood. The house of the "John Wick," "Saw" and "Hunger Games" franchises is what is known in the industry is a mini-major, meaning it's not as big as Disney or Warner Bros., but not as small as Neon or STX. It's somewhere in the middle. Be that as it may, as the industry continues to emerge from the pandemic, Lionsgate is putting together a winning strategy, as evidenced by the company's most recent quarterly earnings report. Alice, Darling is a new psychological thriller starring Anna Kendrick, who plays a movie role like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Normally cast as the upbeat, happy-go-lucky girl or a sidekick in Twilight, Kendrick plays the role of Alice, a young woman in an emotionally abusive relationship. When Alice has to lie to her boyfriend so she can spend a week on vacation with her female friends, she’s forced to confront the true nature of her relationship and deal with her friends’ concerns.
If Kendrick’s performance looks authentic in the film, that may be because she has real-life experience in that department. Kendrick has revealed in her press interviews that she was once a victim of emotional abuse herself.

Lionsgate, the Santa Monica studio and owner of the Starz cable network, came in well above market expectations as it reported results for its third quarter Thursday. It pulled in 1 billion in revenue and 16.6 million in net income, for adjusted earnings per share of 0.26.
The results reflected a welcome development for a smaller studio trying to survive in an industry pushed to prioritize streaming over theatrical and linear television. That Wall Street-driven new normal arguably penalizes smaller-scale entertainment companies while encouraging consolidation and mergers.
Wall Street had predicted a loss of two cents per share for the third quarter, against a loss of 0.12 per share in the prior quarter and earnings of 0.02 per share in the same quarter a year ago, according to a survey by Zacks Investment Research.
“We reported a strong financial quarter with record trailing 12-month library revenues affirming the value of our intellectual properties,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer.

The VOD charts saw an infusion of new blood with Lionsgate’s “Plane” (19.99) surging ahead in its first week. It ranks #1 at iTunes, #2 on Vudu’s weekly chart (disadvantaged by its Friday release), and #4 at Google Play, which always lags a few days behind.
That puts it ahead of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Disney), “Babylon” (Paramount), and “House Party” (Warner Bros. Discovery), all at 19.99. “Wakanda” also streams on Disney+.
“Plane” and “House Party” both came out after their third weekends in theaters. That was expected for “House Party,” the first of several films initially destined for HBO Max but instead debut with less-elevated theatrical play before going to the streaming site.
For “Plane,” it’s an unusual move. The Gerald Butler-produced action film did well in theaters over the three weekends before it added home viewing, but initial response suggests value in moving quickly.

Anna Kendrick is just delightful. From her recent appearance on "Hot Ones" to showing up in things like Stephen Colbert's "The Lord of the Rings" rap for the trilogy's 20th anniversary (where she is given a hard time for being in the "Twilight" movies) she is always a whole lot of fun to watch. Kendrick is promoting her new film, "Alice, Darling," where she plays a woman dealing with an emotionally abusive relationship. She recently sat down with Vanity Fair to watch clips of her old films like "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," "Pitch Perfect," "Camp," and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," where she voiced her thoughts on her graduation speech in the latter.
Kendrick played the relatively small role of Jessica, one of Bella Swan's (Kristen Stewart) human friends in the town of Forks, Washington. If you recall the film, it's the end of high school for Bella,...

There is no one correct way to direct a movie. Most filmmakers nowadays shoot loads of coverage -- i.e. all of the footage necessary to effectively cut the movie together in post-production. This approach gives directors a variety of options in the edit to shape each scene to their liking. Other filmmakers know precisely what they want each day they show up on set, and shoot only what they need to piece together the scene as they've imagined it (typically via storyboard).
Edgar Wright falls fairly solidly into the latter category. He's a master stylist who frames and cuts with purpose. His editing rhythms are uniquely, invigoratingly musical; from the Queen-scored set piece at the Winchester in "Shaun of the Dead" to the percussive "Tequila" gunfight in "Baby Driver," he has most of the movie mapped out in his mind. He's not fanatically anti-coverage like one of his filmmaking heroes,...

Alice, Darling is a film directed by Mary Nighy and starring Anna Kendrick.
Anna Kendrick stars in this movie which is a great acting treat for any dramatic actress. She exhibits all her talent which is indisputable in this drama about abuse.
About the Movie Alice, Cariño (2022)
Fancy a drama about male abuse? Here you have one called “Alice, Darling”, a movie written by Alanna Francis which, thanks to a good screenplay, the goals of the movie are reached in an intelligent manner… that is also manipulative (as the plot reveals to us).
This is a story about psychological abuse that is well narrated and is also a “social denouncement” and you need to be prepared for this. A drama and a denouncement featuring three women who defend themselves and a friend.
Technically this has a very good screenplay that goes shaping and offering the keys to the story very...

Alice is glued to her phone to ensure she doesn’t miss a call or text. She wakes up super early to apply make-up and style her hair to Simon’s preference. Parrots all the soundbites he uses to police her eating habits about the toxicity of sugar. And literally pulls her hair out of her head whenever she has a spare second...

Anna Kendrick had to get acclimated to learning how the sausage gets made in Hollywood.
The Oscar-nominated actress said while on the First We Feast series “Hot Ones” that movies were “kind of ruined” for her as an audience member after first starting out in the film industry. Kendrick made her film debut in 2003 and went on to star in “Twilight,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” and “Pitch Perfect,” while landing an Oscar nomination for “Up in the Air.”
“I think that when you start making movies, there’s a period where they’re kind of ruined for you, because you’re just thinking of behind-the-scenes and how the sausage gets made of it all,” Kendrick said. “And now, I feel like it’s just sort of second nature that’s a running script in the back of my head.”

2023 has been, several weeks in, very encouraging as far as the overall picture at the box office is concerned. We've had hit horror films "M3GAN" and "Skinamarink" in the mix, while "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" have done gangbusters business as holdovers from late 2022. Unfortunately, though, it does seem like adult-skewing, original dramas are still a tough nut to crack. Case in point, Hugh Jackman's latest effort, "The Son," debuted this past weekend and landed with a barely audible whimper. Though, if recent history is any indication, it may not be dead in the water just yet.
Debuting in 554 theaters from Sony Pictures Classics, "The Son" earned a mere 239,855. Director Florian Zeller's follow-up to "The Father," which landed Anthony Hopkins a Best Actor Oscar, netted just 432 per screen in the U.S, an absolutely abysmal start. There's simply no way to...

Just like last January, the first month of 2023 seems to be going the route where very few new movies are having much of an impact while others just continue to make money.
Despite there being a number of new wide and moderate releases, only one of them managed to get into the top five as James Cameron’s epic “Avatar: The Way of Water” remained ahead of the pack with another 19.7 million, down 40 from last weekend, as it comes closer to reaching the 600 million domestic milestone. After that, it’s coming up fast on surpassing Pixar’s “Incredibles 2’s” 608.6 million gross to become the 12th-highest grossing movie domestically.
Cameron’s latest has also become only the sixth movie ever to make 2 billion worldwide, joining Cameron’s two previous films, “Avatar” and “Titanic,” among that miniscule blockbuster subclass. This weekend, the movie added another 56.3 million overseas to bring its worldwide total to 2.02 billion,...

The new film starring Anna Kendrick is one of the few visual narratives to deftly handle the insidious effects of an emotionally abusive relationship
If not guided by an ominous score and a remarkable lead performance of brittle, jittery anxiety, it might take you a third of Alice, Darling, a new film starring Anna Kendrick as a woman in an emotionally abusive relationship, to realize something is wrong. Alice’s relationship with Simon (Charlie Carrick), a thirtysomething Toronto-based artist with a suave British accent, could seem innocuous on a clue-by-clue basis. In isolation, a “thinking of me?” text with a kissing face emoji, or the way he drapes his arm over her like a cape, or his chiding to raise her professional ambitions, could seem like affection. The tell is in Alice’s frayed hair – barrel-curled into, as her friend Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) puts it, an outdated Gossip Girl coif and,...

Often, films that cover domestic abuse will solely show the brutality of the situation without diving into the psychological and emotional aspects at play. Seldom are scripts bold enough to ask and answer the question: Why does she stay? In these fictional depictions, the decision to leave a romantic partner who treats their significant other poorly seems like the most obvious choice in the world. Gone is the nail-biting and second-guessing mentality that comes with years of being told you're wrong, you're ungrateful.
No, we don't see suggestive smirks, positive interactions, or glimmers of flirtation between the abused and abuser that blur the lines between affection and controlling tactics. The men are bad news, and this spectacle-like take on domestic abuse disempowers the women characters in these relationships, chalking their situation up to poor judgment calls. As the child of Bill Nighy and Diana Quick, she would be plonked in a rehearsal room after school – so it’s no surprise she’s stepping behind the camera. The film-maker talks about her extraordinary debut feature, Alice, Darling
When Mary Nighy was a young actor, an unhealthy number of scripts landed in her inbox featuring a character that went something like: “18-year-old-girl, naked, dead.” “Sexual abuse or violence is often just used as a plot device. It’s a catalyst for drama,” she says. “It doesn’t really tell you much about the experience of being abused. Or how you emerge from it.”
Now, with her first feature film as a director, she has made a film that does exactly that: exploring what it might feel like to be trapped inside a coercive, controlling and psychologically abusive relationship. Alice, Darling is the story of an accidental intervention, after...

Alice (Anna Kendrick) doesn’t see herself as a victim of abuse. In fact, she insists she isn’t. Why then when Alice and her friends (played by Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku) come across a poster for a missing girl presumed to have been killed by someone close to her, can she not shake off the spectral feeling of connection to this total stranger’s tragedy? After all, she says to her friends and herself, it’s not like her boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) “hurts me or anything”.
What Alice can’t yet see – and what forms the core revelation of the understated but poignant Alice, Darling – is that abuse is not always a single action. It lives and breathes within her relationship with Simon. It is the ever-present, sickly dread that resides in the pit of Alice’s stomach, which dictates that she must cater to Simon’s every...

Anna Kendrick has reflected on her recent press tour in support of her new film Alice, Darling, saying that she doesn’t think she “can do another thing like that” again.
The thriller drama stars Kendrick as the titular Alice, a woman who’s stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Simon (Charlie Carrick).
In previous interviews, the actor has opened up about her personal connection to the project, sharing her personal experience of surviving “emotional abuse”.
But more recently, she has looked back on the effects of repeatedly talking about her connection to the subject matter in public.
“People have asked me, ‘Was it challenging to shoot the movie?’ and I guess that question makes sense,” Kendrick told IndieWire in a new interview.
“But I’m actually finding that the press is the thing that has been a little trickier to navigate, making sure that I’m...

After a couple decent weekends at the box office, we’re getting two weekends with a mixed bag of releases, this one offering two new semi-thrillers in wide release and a few others, but nothing too exciting. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
In 2018, Aneesh Chaganty’s “Searching” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and it was released by Sony/Screen Gems later that year to make 26 million. Now, Screen Gems is releasing “Missing,” the thematic sequel starring Nia Long and Stormy Reid. It was not directed by Chaganty, who is a producer on this one, but rather, two of his editors from “Searching,” Nick Johnson and Will Merrick.
“Missing” has received decent early reviews, but it’s also been fairly low-key compared to some of the month’s other releases even if it will be released in 3,000 theaters, which is a thousand more theaters than “Searching” ever got.
