Season One Review

Amazon's "Them" came following a trend of black themed horror that started with "Get Out" and continued with "Us", the more recent "Antebellum" and the TV series "Lovecraft Country". There is naturally a level of uncomfortableness associated with seeing aspects of the black American experience replayed on screen, necessary uncomfortableness though, for people to learn from that history. That said, the shows prevailing nastiness would make it tough for me to say that I enjoyed it.

Following an unspeakable tragedy, an African American family relocate to Compton, becoming the only black household on the all-white neighbourhood. Faced with open, naked, racist hostility from the outset, the family face a further onslaught from an otherworldly power - one set on taking their sanity, before ending their lives.

The performances in the show are generally really good. The parents of the family, Henry and Lucky are played by British pairing Ashley Thomas and Deborah Ayorinde - they are both excellent. Across the series we see their rationality shattered and rebuilt as both they, and us as the audience struggle to determine if what they can see is truly real. Their daughters, played by Shahadi Wright Joseph and Melody Hurd are both excellent too, particularly Joseph - who plays the teenager daughter, attending high school where she is the only black student. She was also in "Us".

I'm not sure why, looking back on the show at its conclusion, we spend quite so much time with Alison Pill's Betty - the neighbour who is most aggrieved by the Emory's arrival and who does the most to fire up the community. We get a couple of plot detours for her, both of which are unrelated to the main story in any way.

On a couple of occasions, the show is really hard to watch. The violence can be both sustained and graphic and that was more prevalent than some of the other horror tropes that you see elements off. I do also think that this series didn't move as fast as I wanted it too, hitting the same points too frequently and suffers by revealing too much in the last couple of episodes, rather than across it's runtime.

There is technical quality in display both in front of and behind the camera, but it's in service of a story that, for me, had some issues. Hopefully the anthologising aspect, will make the second season more of a complete triumph.

Young, Gifted, And Black

So is this the finale? I really haven't looked. But it starts off with ...Betts, wonderfully acted by Allison Pill. Oh she's trapped in the basement by the man who 'loves' her so much. Bomb shelters on your property are so awesome and useful, I tells you what. Oh no she tries to run!!!! Why run from the LOVE OF YOUR LIFE???? Oh dear, she got put down!!! Bahahah well that learned her! +1 Star

Okay back to Compton. Dream A Little Dream Of Me. The Emory family gets free and kills one of the racists, but stops short of executing Betts and Marty because his daughter calls to him from behind. Ruby is having some sort of episode... and Gracie also.

I was really confused sorta by the end of the ep and what was going on. The story is pretty whack. I enjoyed the ending and the confusion of it it inspired in me however. +1 Star 7/10.

Outstanding!

I don't understand all the hate for this episode ( or the one before it). Please don't skip episode 9, It explains so much. The entire season had my stomach in knots watching so much hate, but also had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next. The performances were outstanding & It came to a satisfying conclusion. Very well done.

A satisfying conclusion to a great season

I honestly do not understand all of the hate against this show, particularly the last two episodes. For all of you that don't understand and view them as pointless, did you actually pay attention?

I feel like some people read poor reviews and enter a show or film with pre-conceived notions. As someone who went into Them with not the highest of expectations, I thought it was incredibly well done and concluded perfectly. Very hard to watch in parts, but I feel it's necessary. Minus the supernatural elements, a lot of what you see in Them is just a grain of sand of what black people have experienced. It's far from pointless.

Brilliant show.

Enthralling start / Uninspired end

Warning: Spoilers
Man, what this show could have been is what left me feeling so let down upon the conclusion of the finale. I loved the production, acting, storyline, intensity and every other emotion that the first eight episodes provided. With that, I was hoping for a cohesive and/or fascinating end that gave some of the horror elements a proper place within the show. We received none of that.

The biggest letdown is that the spirits involvement was simply that and were put out without much intrigue at all. It felt like they were just there and lacked any deeper intrigue or meaning to the show. Oh, what it could have been.

Overall, the first 8 episodes are must see TV, but upon finishing the series I don't know if I should recommend it to others with a caveat or avoid that all together??

Maybe someone else can make sense of the ending in a manner that is fitting to the first 3/4 of the series...

Amazing series, disappointing finale.
gabrielemoratti19 April 2021
Such a great series, with such a nonsense finale. So disappointing! My personal feeling is that they wanted to keep the door open to a second season. To be honest, I don't have any other explanation. I give a 9 to "Them" up until ep 9, and a 1 to this last ep. Hence the average.

So frustrated
suzexf-114 April 2021
This series was full of such intensity and emotion and, then, to end in such a disappointing way. The rating I gave is for the actors and the great performances. I can appreciate the performances and production, but I wish I'd never invested the time now in this series.

What did I just watch?
dh_oohmedia17 April 2021
I left the final 3 episodes to watch one night because I enjoyed the first 7 so much. It literally just fell apart at the end. So disappointed. I can't even describe what happened or why. Just a disjointed mess of a final episode. I gave it 4 stars because the acting was stellar.

Just awful final 2 episodes to cap off what could have been good.
mpboylanjr-5403811 April 2021
My lord these final 2 episodes really ruined the show for me. This last episode went nowhere . It was like the whole series was moving along very well and then it veered off into this dreamlike convoluted mess . The creator did something different and good with the idea and execution of his image for the show and then episode 8 ended and I couldn't even get through the final 2 episodes in 3 sittings. What a shame for a show that could have been , dear I say great. Very unfortunate.

What a letdown!
MegaMaexn14 April 2021
I now regret that I watched the whole season of this disjointed story and largely messy writing. By the end of this episode you won't know what the actual intention of the writers was, to denounce the rift between white and black bourgeoisie? To tell a story about a haunted/possessed family? To make a fragmented horror tale? None of this worked, it's highly dissatisfying and unintelligible - such a shame!

As a black man (Thought I should say that as everyone else is nowadays...) I would like to say this series is a awful watch!!

I long for the days I can watch a movie/series directed by a black person and its about something else other than racism! A nice film about black people excelling would be great!!

Modern Art
omendata30 April 2021
This series , designed to be deliberately provocative and my oh my by all the reviews it seems like it has succeeded rather well, it is much like modern art these days all style with no real substance and this final episode nails the coffin shut!

Season 1: Has A Plan, But Doesn't Execute It Well
zkonedog25 April 2021
A few episodes into "Them", one thing becomes clear to viewers: it's a show that will be defined by its endgame. At times, the storytelling seems like "throwing things at the wall to see what will stick", but remarkably the final few episodes show a coherent plan in place all along. Sadly, very little support was given to that overall vision, and what was present proves to be "too little, too late".

For a very basic overview, "Them" tells the story of Henry (Ashley Thomas) and Lucky Emory (Deborah Ayorinde) moving to 1950s-era Compton with their children Ruby Lee (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and Gracie (Melody Hurd). Not only do the Emorys have to deal with the overt racism--led by neighbor Betty Wendell (Alison Pill)--"welcoming" them to their new home, but each family member seems to also be dealing with an other-worldly apparition.

It's pretty clear from the get-go here that "Them" is borrowing (if not even outright stealing, in certain aspects) the vibe from Jordan Peele's 2019 film "Us". The goal is to tell a compelling black-centric story couched in the thriller/horror genre.

In that thriller/horror department, "Them" could very easily be judged an outright failure. Besides a few jump-scares, all of its "spooky" moments come across as very much manufactured. Plus, the "big reveal" happens so late that numerous episodes are spent with the viewer almost completely in the dark as to what anything truly means. Not exactly the best formula for compelling television.

The racial/social themes? Again, until the final two episodes, it's a pretty big "meh". The material here is so over-the-top in presentation that it could almost be considered satire in certain places. With the exception of the interesting notion that Compton was once lily-white (a thread that never really gets pulled), there's no new ground trod.

Through all that disappointment, however, "Them" held my interest because it seemed to be building towards something. It was, and that "something" (revealed in the second-to-last episode) produced when I considered to be the best installment of this season. A legitimately creepy and poignant tale that ties a lot of loose ends together. Unfortunately, I felt that such a revelation came either too late, or with far too little solid material in front of it.

So, because of the tease and relatively interesting late-season payoff, I feel okay giving "Them" a middle-of-the-road five-star ranking. I wish it could have used its solid ending as the capstone of an interesting slow-build instead of the one shining beacon of story, as that plot tightness would have increased the show's entertainment potential considerably.
