Warning: Spoilers
First of all, yes. This episode is very much filler. They could've made this a 10 minute opener for the finale as is and nothing would've been lost. It gives a smidge of insight into the man in the black hat, but that insight is stereotypical evil/is cursed.

Also, regarding the claims of it being anti-Christian, that's literally the opposite of what's happening. It's made clear when the boy speaks that it's the Devil/demons/whatever manipulating the man in the black hat under the guise of God. He literally says that he answered Epps when the Lord ignored him. The lady said if God saw how Epps was misusing the Word, it would burst into flames...and then it bursts into flames right there in his hands. You could only think this was anti-Christian if you skipped the entire second half of the episode.

A filler maybe... not
vampiresrule34724 April 2021
This episode gives Epps (the man in black) a back story. I may not think it's necessary, but it shows why he does what he does. This episode comes after the cliffhanger of episode 8 which isn't so tasteful. Outside of that it's not a bad bridge that connect the final episodes to each other.

Great episode
boycottme22 September 2021
What some, somehow, mistake as filler, is really an elucidation on the events of the season. It's a great (though hard to watch) episode that could almost stand alone as a short weird fiction/horror tale.

A little backstory
ryanninjuhs16 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ignore the other review, this episode is fantastic and does well to give us some backstory about the clear and present supernatural elements of this show. Despite having little to do with the current events in the show up to this point, besides explaining the man with the hat's existence, it's an entertaining episode with a scene nearly on par with the cat in a bag scene from earlier in the season in terms of wickedness.

I Do Not Presume To Question Your Will, Lord.
wandernn1-81-68327416 August 2021
OH HELL YEAH! LOVE THE START!! Chris Heyerdahl is great. LOL, like he's reprising his role in Hell On Wheels almost. He was a priest there too! +1 Star.

So this is where we learn about the backstory, with the curse of the man with the black hat.

It's really a decent episode.

THE COVENANT IS SEALED!!!! +1 Star, 7/10.

Absolutely underrated!
davidferreiro-7076228 June 2021
In my opinion, this is probably one of the best episodes of the series. Not only is not just "filler", but it is beautifully crafted. I loved the story from start to finish and I feel like it was necessary to add a strong background for the man with the black hat.

Before this episode I wasn't sure about the rules of the universe in which the story takes place, but now I know.

It's a 9/10 for me!

Best episode of a disappointing series
omendata30 April 2021
As a horror fan , this is probably the best episode of a rather poor series.

Yes it is a raging anti-white series created by someone with an axe to grind and underlying political motives in the current climate in the USA and about as subtle as a steam roller but as a horror fan I do not bother with the politics.

As a movie fanatic what matters most to me is the acting, story, music, photography and everything else that makes up a good watch and although the series has its flaws it is well produced and acted, great music it is just a shame the story is so disjointed and out of focus but this episode was the only one that really gripped my attention so gets a fair 7/10 on the hatchets scale from me!

Amazing episode! (Some reviewers just don't get it)
RBehndleman27 April 2021
Such amazing cinematography and acting. This episode illuminates the whole season. Not filler whatsoever. Don't listen to the basics here who just don't get it.

Skip (Unless You Like Filler)
damius-3835714 April 2021
There's a reason this is the LOWEST rated episode of the ENTIRE show.

You could skip this entire episode and it wouldnt change the story at all. It serves as a means of seperation between the cliffhanger in episode 8 and the resolution of episode 10. Drawn-out fluff to make the show 10 episodes, when it didnt need to be. This is a perfect example of filler.

Whether you like the episode or not, that's what it is. If you enjoy filler episodes, you may like this. If you don't, you should skip this. Either way, the rest of the show soars HIGH compared to this episode.

Because even as filler, this episode is not good.

Great but traumatizing episode!
lillyde20 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, it's a riddle to me how some people here don't seem to understand that this isn't an "Anti-Christian" episode. They even made it very clear in the end with the dialogue between Epps and "Miles" that it wasn't God but evil disguised as such. That's what this episode is about. Everything that happened after they were "welcomed" into the community was distrust within the community combined with, and in the end led, by Epps' foolishnesses and pride. He even spoke about the pride he felt and THE SIN it inherits + wasn't Miles always present in some corner while he was praying?

Epps' eyesight worsened by the day. That combined with his internal conflict and confident delusions about hearing God and him using Epps as a spokesperson (if u will), telling him what to do is what led to the end and it's generally a mistake LOTS of religious people make. Their egotistical characters lead them to make up their own mind about things and call it the word of God or whatever. They believe in their scriptures/... but act out of self-righteousness, fueled by evil.

I'm not religious so it was very clear to me that this wasn't a criticism of Christianity in itself but more so about what religion ultimately becomes when it's in the hands and minds of self-righteous people.

More Anti-Christian Nonsense
kender-725-35842520 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
More Hollywood Anti-Christian trash. Hollywood never ends its efforts to portray Christians as hard hearted, judgmental and even outright evil. This episode uses the ages old Anti-Christian technique of showing fictional Christians using out of context Old Testament scripture to their own evil ends and ignoring the New Testament admonition to Peace and Love and that Christian Salvation is open to all people of all races through Faith.

Masterpiece, a true work of art
zachncheese13 May 2024
I made an account just to write this review because I was so disappointed by the lack of substantial reviews. This is more than a filler episode, more than background for a paranormal entity. This episode is the history for everything in the show, detailing how powerful religion can be as a source for the divine or the devil. You don't have to support or oppose religion for this episode, and you don't need to come with a certain background. All you need is an open mind.

Like any work of art, this episode, and the whole show, is very controversial. Art comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable. What you do with the reaction you have to this work of art is up to you. Be careful not to let a simple takeaway be how you remember this masterpiece. The more I reflect on this episode, the more questions and thoughts I have, and it keeps getting retroactively better.

Good ingredients, terrible execution.
enriquegato9 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's a pity that the key chapter is so weak. The way things turn against the black family is unexpected in a very bad way. You have your face twisted most of the chapter, and you get exhausted to the reveal at the end up to the point you don't care about it.

"I Only Have Eyes For You" Was Very Disturbing
musicali73 July 2022
Love the show, the acting, the characters and everything about it. Until episode 9. I understand the intent and purpose of the premise but your "execution" was too hard to watch. I see lots of 7-10 star ratings/reviews for this episode. But not from me. I can also see why this episode has the lowest overall rating of any of the other episodes. Some of the other things I've enjoyed about this series is the cinematography, musical score and music song choices. But whoever gave the okay & green-light to feature the song "I only have eyes for you" towards the end of this episode lacked judgement and it was extremely disturbing to hear & see such a beautiful song so poorly portrayed. I understand perhaps that was the intent but it DID NOT work for me. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the finale episode 10 and back to he Emory's. PS I'm writing this at midnight - 2 hours after viewing because I can't sleep because my eyes, ears and mind still can't believe what I had seen.
