Exclusive: NBC has commissioned writers rooms for two hourlong projects, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, from Good Girls creator Jenna Bans and her frequent collaborator, former Good Girls executive producer Bill Krebs, as well as The Hunting Party, a high-concept crime procedural from JJ Bailey and The Endgame co-creator Jake Coburn. Universal Television, where Bans, Krebs and Bailey are under overall deals and Coburn has a first-look deal, is the studio on both.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society, which had a put pilot commitment, was one of two sales at NBC this development season for Bans and Krebs through Universal TV. Their other script, Murder By the Book, with Good Girls‘ Retta attached to star, was picked up to pilot. It also originally had a put pilot commitment.
NBC has split its drama slate between the two models, with two pilots, Murder By the Book and Wolf, and two writers rooms for a straight-to-series consideration.

The long-gestating Zorro TV series reboot with a female protagonist has moved a step closer to reality with an order for six additional scripts from the CW, bringing the script total to 7. As Deadline reported exclusively last month, the CW’s gender-swapped reimagining of the classic masked vigilante character hails from from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez, Sean Tretta (Mayans M.C.), Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate and CBS Studios.
The pickup of backup scripts for Zorro joins three traditional pilot orders the CW made today, to Berlanti Prods.’ latest DC project, Gotham Knights, the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters as well as the Walker prequel Walker: Independence. During the regular 2019-20 television season, NBC launched only seven new TV shows and five of them were cancelled. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020-21 season will be unlike any other in history. Which TV shows will be cancelled or renewed this time? Stay tuned.
NBC shows this season (so far): American Ninja Warrior, The Blacklist, Capital One College Bowl, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Pd, Connecting..., Dateline NBC, Debris, Ellen's Game of Games, Good Girls, Kenan, Law & Order: Svu, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Manifest, Mr. Mayor, New Amsterdam, Nurses, Superstore, This Is Us, Transplant, The Voice, The Wall, Weakest Link, Young Rock, and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.
There's lots of data that NBC execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here's how the network's shows are doing.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist fans, we have some good news:
The beloved NBC drama has been saved.
Per Deadline, beloved dramedy is returning for a holiday movie that will wrap up the canceled drama.
But there's a catch, and quite a big one at that:
The movie will be on Roku.
While Roku has not confirmed the development, it is thought that a deal with the show's cast is being ironed out to bring them back for the special.
What's more, a third season could follow. It will all come down to the reception of the movie.
NBC officially canceled the series in June after negotiations with Peacock to rescue the series fell apart.
An eight-episode final season was said to be part of the pact, but a deal could not be reached, leaving fans questioning whether they would get a conclusion.
Lionsgate, the studio behind the series, wasted no time...

The search for a new home for NBC's canceled Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist just hit a major snag.
According to Deadline, the options on the cast expired last week, and here's the kicker:
They were not extended by Lionsgate.
While this would typically spell doom for a canceled series searching for a new home, Lionsgate is still trying to find a way to continue the series.
It's a rare development, but such a move could come down to cast availability because they are now free to pursue other projects.
With these negotiations being so intricate, it's more likely the series will remain dead, but stranger things have happened.
Deadline notes that Lionsgate is exploring continuing the show as a series, a miniseries, and a movie, possibly whichever would allow the fans to get some closure.
Unfortunately, the outlet stresses that neither option is believed to be close to reality, leaving...

Good Girls got some not-so-good news last week.
The beloved NBC dramedy got canceled after four seasons.
The news understandably took the cast and crew by surprise, and Mae Whitman is shedding light on her thoughts.
“Feel too sad and confused to look at phone,” Whitman wrote in an Instagram story over the weekend, before sharing some photos of "her girls" Christina Hendricks and Retta.
“Love my pals on this cast so much,” she added, “and love you guys who loved the show. It was such a joy being Annie and I’m forever grateful to you for supporting us. K me go cry now.”
While being one of the buzziest series on broadcast TV, the series failed to find much of an audience in traditional ratings.
Good Girls Season 4 is currently averaging 1.5 million total viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo, but the show is thought to be a behemoth in post-airdate results.

NBC’s Manifest ended on an abrupt note as the series came to an end with numerous unanswered questions surrounding Flight 828. Despite the cancellation, series creator Jeff Rake has plans to provide some closure to his “Manifesters.”
“We’re trying to find a way to conclude the series. Could take a week, a month, a year. But we’re not giving up,” Rake tweeted on Sunday.
NBC opted not to renew the missing-plane drama series after three seasons, despite the series having a strong showing on Netflix, where it had been in the No. 1 slot before its cancellation. Adding salt to the wound, Netflix passed on the series, bringing Manifest’s search for a new home to an end.
Heading into the upfronts in May, Manifest was one of four shows on the bubble. Debris, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Good Girls have all been cancelled by the network, making four for four.

First Debris, then Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, then Manifest and now, Good Girls. NBC is not playing around with renewals and cancellations this year, and has canceled Good Girls—yet another beloved but low-rated drama with dedicated fans and a passionate cast—after four seasons. And this time, there's not even any hope of a savior, as negotiations to move the show to somewhere like Netflix reportedly did not work out. The show starred Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman as a trio of moms and criminal (sometimes) masterminds, and Hendricks and Whitman have both expressed their sadness on social media. “Good Girls” has been canceled after four seasons at NBC, Variety has learned.
The drama series was the last remaining question mark in NBC’s scripted lineup from the 2020-2021 season. The broadcaster also recently axed the dramas “Manifest,” “Debris,” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” Like “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” and “Manifest,” there had been talks about finding “Good Girls” a new home on a streaming platform, but that move ultimately did not work financially.

Good Girls’ crime spree is coming to an end.
NBC has canceled the drama starring Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman after four seasons. The show will end after the network airs its five remaining episodes between now and July.
The hope was that the network and the studio could find a way to return for one more season to close out the story, but they were unable to make the financials work. A contingency plan to move the show to Netflix also did not pan out.
The series will not be shopped elsewhere by studio Universal Television, despite being a decent draw on Netflix, topping its streaming ratings earlier this year.

It marks 4-for-4 cancellations for NBC bubble shows; the network canceled Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Manifest earlier this month, while Debris was canceled at the end of May.

Manifest's fate is sealed, and we wish it was better news.
Per Deadline, Netflix has decided against picking up a fourth season of NBC's canceled drama.
Netflix was deemed the most likely home after the first two seasons launched earlier this month and flew to the top spot on the streamer's most popular list.
Netflix has been known to pick up canceled dramas, but such moves are becoming less likely each year.
Lucifer was saved after its Fox cancellation and will wrap with its upcoming sixth season, so that show had a healthy second life.
The news about Netflix not picking up Manifest means the show is over ... for good.
It's an unfortunate way to end the tale, especially when the recent Manifest Season 3 was halfway in creator Jeff Rake's six-season-plan.
Now, it is thought that with cast options expiring, it would be too difficult to get...

TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 133 shows for Best Drama Series. On the bright side, the amount of entrants is down by 66 from last year, and members no longer have to winnow their choices down to just 10 favorites. As with the last several years, they are being told to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Last year’s champ, “Succession,” will not return to defend its title, as no new episodes of the HBO series have aired since its second season finale in October 2019. Of its seven rivals last year, four — “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark,” and “Stranger Things” — also did not return in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. The remaining three — “The Crown,...

The passengers of flight 828 will not be getting answers at NBC since the network has canceled Manifest after three seasons.
The decision to end the high-concept drama comes as quite a surprise because its ratings warranted a fourth-season pickup.
Manifest Season 3 ultimately averaged 3.2 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in the all-important adults 18-49 demo.
The series dipped 29 percent in the demo this season, but when you compare it to the drops of the other shows on NBC, it was expected.
Among 14 dramas on NBC, Manifest ranked No.7 in the demo, meaning that a renewal was deemed a given.
The series also has a strong digital footprint since its launch on NBC, picking up many additional viewers via streaming and other metrics, yet another reason to think it would be picked up.
Manifest's cancellation comes around halfway through a planned six-season arc, so fans will not be impressed with the decision.

Exclusive: NBC has opted not to renew missing plane drama series Manifest for a fourth season. The decision came down Monday night, just hours before the options on the cast were to expire Tuesday and amid a strong showing of Manifest on Netflix where it has been #1 in the U.S. for the past three days.
Manifest, from Warner Bros. TV and Universal TV, was the highest-rated on linear among NBC’s four bubble shows by a wide margin, especially in total viewers. Of the four, three, Debris, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and now Manifest, have been canceled. The remaining series, Good Girls, is looking good for renewal.
Manifest was conceived by creator Jeff Rake and was sold to NBC with a six-season plan that has been mapped out. That plan — and fans’ three years of devoted following — will fall through unless another network/platform steps in to pick up...

Hey, "Manifest" fans. We totally hope you guys had a blast watching tonight's episodes 12 and 13, especially since they were the last episodes for this current season 3. That's right, guys. Episodes 12 and 13 were indeed the finale episodes for Manifest's current season 3. Unfortunately, we can't officially confirm with you guys, right now, if there will be a new season 4 because NBC hasn't quite made their renewal decision just yet. However, we were able to track down some insight into how NBC is feeling about renewing Manifest for a new season 4, thanks to the folks over at Deadline.com. Back on May 27, 2021, Deadline revealed that NBC canceled one of their new dramas named "Debris," and that this cancellation gave Manifest better chances of landing a new season 4 renewal. In addition to that, they said that Warner Bros. Television Group chairman Channing Dungey definitely wants to keep Manifest going on NBC.

One of the funniest and heartwarming TV shows has sung its last song.
NBC on Wednesday confirmed that Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist has been canceled after two seasons.
The series was initially set to be picked up by Peacock for an additional season as the series has a strong digital footprint, but a deal could not be reached.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist recently concluded its second -- and final -- season, but the on-air ratings were not enough for it to continue at NBC.
Deadline notes that Peacock was in line to pick the series up, but ultimately, contract negotiations broke down, and NBC did not want to pick it up.
Still, there's a chance the Jane Levy-fronted series could return. Lionsgate Television, which co-produces the show, is trying to find a home away from NBCUniversal.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” has been canceled after two seasons at NBC, Variety has learned.
According to sources, there had been talks about moving the musical dramedy series to streaming service Peacock for a third season, but that move ultimately did not come together. According to a spokesperson for Lionsgate Television, which co-produces the series, there are plans to shop it to other outlets.
“In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following,” the spokesperson said.
The series starred Jane Levy as Zoey Clarke, a computer coder living in San Francisco. After an unusual event, Zoey, suddenly starts to hear the innermost wants, thoughts and desires of the people around her through popular songs.
Along with Levy, the series also starred Alex Newell, Skylar Astin, John Clarence Stewart, Mary Steenburgen,...

Three days after the Debris Season 1 finale, NBC has decided not to move forward with another season.
The Joel Wyman created sci-fi series starring Jonathan Tucker, and Riann Steele started with a lot of promise.
Tucker and Steele starred as two agents from rival countries tasked with working together to determine the origin of mysterious alien debris falling to earth.
Tucker's Bryan was an ex-combat soldier who served in Afghanistan, and Steele's Finola was an MI6 agent serving the UK.
Early on, Bryan and Finola seemed like opposites. Bryan was pragmatic, and Finola was interested in the implications of the debris for its usefulness to humanity.
As the two characters worked together, they soon met in the middle, forming a tight bond that placed them in the middle, fighting against management and a group called Influx.

NBC has canceled Debris, Deadline confirmed on Thursday, after the fate of the freshman sci-fi detective drama had been up in the air following its May 24 finale that wrapped up a 13-episode run.
It was one of five NBC shows — along with Good Girls, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Manifest and Ellen’s Game of Games — that were left off the network’s list this month of returning series and new shows. A big swing and the first NBC 2020 pilot to get a series order and premiere on the network, a renewal had not been looking promising.

No emergency here: Fox’s “9-1-1” finished up just fine, drawing a 1.0 “live” rating among adults 18-49 and 6 million total viewers. Pairing its top drama with the season finale for spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star,” Fox finished first on another Monday. Readers can find TheWrap’s interviews with “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” showrunner Tim Minear and “9-1-1” star Oliver Stark and “Lone Star” lead Rob Lowe here and here. Meanwhile, The CW’s “Black Lightning,” CBS’ “All Rise” and NBC’s “Debris” all had much less impressive finale ratings during Monday’s primetime block. And those first two were not just season finales, but series finales. Fox was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 5.5 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 8 p.m., “9-1-1” scored that aforementioned 1.0 and 6 million viewers, plus a 7 share. “Lone Star” at 9 earned a 0.8/5 and 5 million viewers.

He's no Walter Bishop, but John Noble joined Debris Season 1 Episode 13 as an Influx member named Otto, who has some pretty amazing powers.
The episode also revealed that George is no Walter Bishop, either.
George isn't a benevolent presence, but, as I initially thought long ago, the leader of Influx.
There is no Influx without George, who took his own life to be reborn. He never said exactly what being reborn did for him, but the assumption is that he's preparing for the piece of debris recovered at the quarry.
That debris will help humanity ascend and find a higher plane of consciousness and thought.
Finola: Why would you say that you have called Influx?
George: I'm going to tell you something that, at first, you're going to wish I hadn't.
Finola: Dad.
George: I took my life to allow myself a rebirth, and I paid the price. I want you to know this,...
