Sex & Nudity

  • There is some male and female (cartoon) nudity in this series. A nude male infant is shown in a few shots in one episode, and an adult male is shown nude in multiple shots for a portion of another episode. Also, there are some fantasy depictions of non-human breastfeeding.
  • Graphic nudity is an infrequent occurrence throughout the entire show, but when it's shown, it is not censored or obscured at all. Both male and female genitalia, including pubic hair is shown, but it is animated. The main character's portal is a vulva and he portals into the vagina.
  • Some crude, but comical sexual references

Violence & Gore

  • Strong graphic violence is present in almost the entire season. Slashing, stabbing, shooting, choking, and bludgeoning are always shown in graphic detail. Gore is present as well, brain matter, intestines, innards can be seen in some of the most gruesome moments of the show.
  • People and/or creatures are shot graphically with some detail of insides and blood splatters.
  • A conversation in Season 1 Episode 7 briefly discusses the Civil War and the process of disembowelment and decomposition.

Profanity

  • "Fuck", "shit", "ass", "cunt", and other profanities are used at least once.
  • Frequent uses of "fuck", "fucking" etc.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Like the film 'Waking Life', the show deals with existential topics regarding death, religion, drug abuse, and much more. The characters anxieties and regrets are mentioned frequently.
  • The Midnight Gospel, albeit a science fantasy dark dramedy, has a consistent theme throughout all of its episodes; all episodes deal with heavy topics such as drugs, pregnancy and the afterlife, sorcery and other forms of ritualistic magic, emotional connection, self-awareness, meditation and self-acceptance, institutionalization of death, the concept of birth, life, death altogether and accepting death as it is.
