- After Oversight is almost killed a bombing, he recruits Mac to help him find the suspected bomber; Mac meets his Aunt Gwendolyn.
- While Mac and James go hunting for Mason, the CIA invades Phoenix and demands that Matty tell them what she's learned about File 47. After escaping Codex's assault squad at Mason's cabin, Mac is reunited with his long-lost aunt and discovers what she's been up to since she apparently died in an airplane crash.—Gislef
- Vindictive Mason resurfaces, so Mac and his father Oversight suspend their feud to catch him once and for all, but after Mac defuses a mine on their way, they find Mason didn't even expect them and soon realize it was set up by CODEX. This forces the trio to work together to escape, but they are caught by CODEX and finally meet its leader "Titan," who is Mac's maternal aunt, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Hayes, a former DXS Agent presumed killed. She explains that the state of the world forces scientists to "play God" and wipe out one-quarter of the earth's population to preserve its long-term future but fails to persuade Mac to join her. Mason and James make a plan to destroy the place after Mac is safe, but James is forced to manually trigger the blast and is presumed dead. Mac survives alongside Mason, who then flees again. Meanwhile, The Phoenix is ambushed by CIA executive Burke, who found out Matty was inquiring about File 47. After thwarting the CIA, Matty finally tells the team about File 47, stating that all who worked on it were killed by Burke, but one actually survived: Gwen.—KGF Vissers
- Bozer arrives in the Phoenix lab and notices all of the scientists running by. He joins them, and they all go in as Desi spars with Mac. The two of them are fighting and Mac says that he's tough enough to handle it. He takes her down and she congratulates him on sweeping her off her feet for the first time ... and then kicks her bet. Matty and Russ among others are taking bets on the winner.
Later, a bomb goes off in a Federal building downtown. The team watch the footage on the TV in the war room, and they note that the building bombed was a few blocks away from them. James comes in and figures that someone was sending them a message. He and Mac exchange greeting, and Matty tells Mac that she had James come in because he has some theories on the bomber. James figures that Mason is the bomber, and says that he's been tracking Mason to somewhere near LA. Bozer reports that Ballistics has come back with a report confirming that the bomb is Mason's favored design, but James notes that the building was empty and blowing up empty buildings isn't his style.
James has connected Mason to three aliases, and one is the name on a property outside of Needles. There's also video showing Mason near the bomb site a day before the bombing. Mac figures that it's a message for him and James, and James wants Mac to go with him. They can't bring in the FBI because Mason has contacts in the organization. James tells Matty to stay on the "other thing" and says that she's onto something.
Once Mac and James leave, Matty has Riley hack the NSA surveillance scans while Desi and Bozer check the locals in the areas. She tells Russ that she has something more pressing but refuses to go into details. Once Russ leaves, Matty makes sure her office windows are shuttered.
As Mac and James drive to Needles, Mac points out that James chose Mac over Mason's son and that's why he's not happy with James. James defends his decision, saying that he'd make the same choice.
Matty calls in for her contact but is forced to leave a message saying for the man to call her about File 47.
Mac and James come to the road leading to the property. James talks about he was going to retire to a place like Mason's, and starts to apologize. Mac says that he grew up without a father or mother, and notes that families never talk about the hard things like some families do. James says that he has cancer, just as tree fall across the road. A remote control anti-personnel mine drops onto the truck roof, and the two men discover that Mason is jamming their signal to Phoenix. There's a motion sensor on the mine, meaning that they get out it goes off.
At Phoenix, Riley discovers that they've lost Mac's signal. She enhances the Phoenix received but still gets nothing.
Mac pulls wires out of the speaker, and James gets Desi's hockey stick out of the back to use as a control rod. As they work, Mac complains that James is just now telling him about his cancer. James admits that he doesn't know what to say and asks if they can start over. Mac says that they already did, and James says that he's willing to try again.
As Bozer and Desi come in and report that they've found nothing about Mason, Riley prepares to reroute another satellite. Burke comes in with his CIA agents and tells them that he has executive branch authority to shut Phoenix down. When the CIA agents aim guns at them, Russ attacks one of them and takes the man's gun. Burke stops his other men from opening fire, and tells Russ that he's going to want to be cool. Matty notes that they're in the middle of an operation, and Burke takes her to an interrogation room. She tells the others that she has it and goes willingly with Burke.
Mac sends a wire out on the mine, and James shorts the wire to short out the mine. They realize Mac shorted out the electrical system and start walking. The two men head through the woods and James apologizes for note telling Mac about the cancer. Mac apologizes for not being there, and James says that there was nothing his son could have done. He assures Mac that he's doing pretty well, and admits that he wasn't a good father. Aws Mac says that they can't change the past, Mason comes up with a shotgun and ord3ers them at gunpoint to go with them.
In the interrogation room, Burke demands information about File 47 or he'll shut Phoenix down because of operating in two foreign countries without government permission and stealing from DARPA. Matty says that File 47 has something to do with a long-term plan to combat global threats. She refuses to say how she learned of it, and Burke suggests that she'll undergo enhanced interrogation.
Russ finally orders the others back to work. Burke's lead guard reminds them that they're on lockdown, and Russ calls a contact5, Mike, saying he has a sitch with the CIA.
Mason leads James and Mac to his home, and says that he doesn't care that the rest of the team will be coming from them. He reminds them that it would have been his son's 30th birthday that day, and says that he hasn't been in the city in months. They don't believe him, but Mason points out that he has no reason to lie and notes that they knocked out his received. Mac says that they didn't knock out Mason's receiver, and Mac yells at them all to get down as armed men arrive outside and open fire. Mason shoots back, and a stray shot blows up a can of propane near him, knocking him to the floor with the shrapnel. The lead shooter, Scarlett, moves forward, and Mason opens a trapdoor and Mason tells them to go on while he blows up the house behind them. The MacGvyers enter the tunnel below, and Scarlett and her men come in. Explosives drop down from the ceiling, and below Mason triggers the bombs. The shooters get out just in time as the house blows up.
Russ goes to the interrogation room and tells Burke that he has the Secretary of Defense, Mike, on the phone. Burke takes the phone and advises Mike to stay uninvolved. Mike agree, and Russ insists on staying with Matty as her legal representation. Matty says that DXS initiated File 47 14 years ago, and Burke doe3sn't know what to ask because he doesn't know what File 47 is. She tells Burke that she knows he led the operation that killed off everyone who knew anything about File 47, even though he had no idea what it 2was. Burke wonders how she knows, but Matty just smiles.
The Trio emerge from the tunnel, Mason still training his gun on it. Mac finally asks to look at Mason's shrapnel wound because it's slowing him--and them--down. Mac rigs an electromagnet out of his Swiss army knife and a battery to remove the shrapnel out, and tells Mason that they're not friends. James figures that someone deep-faked Mason into the security footage, someone with deep resources, and Mac suggests that it's Cortex. Mason has never heard of them, and they figure they'd better keep moving.
In the war room, Riley points out to the lead agent that he's leaving two agents out of the field. An alarm goes off on Bozer's phone, and he tells the lead agent that he has to go take his medicine for his heart or he'll die. The agent has his soldier escort him, and Riley attacks the agent while Riley draws his attention. After she drops him with a sleeper hold, they tie him up with some cords, draw the shutters close, and Riley reroutes a satellite to contact Mac. They compare notes, and Riley warns that they have heat signature coming at them from all directions.
Riley loses the signal, and hummers surround the trio. Scarlett addresses Mac by name, says someone wants to meet him, and they put black hoods on all three men.
Matty tells Russ that Burke deals with CIA wetworks, and notes that Burke is the best and doesn't make mistakes. She brings up a 2003 photo of a lead physicist on a File 47 project. Burke's squad eliminated all assets working on File 47, including DXS agents, but the woman in the photo--Gwendolyn-supposedly died in an air crash. Recently Matty found surveillance footage of Gwen, proving that she's still alive as of a month ago in Italy.
That night, Scarlett and her men take the trio to a house. Gwen comes in and James recognizes her. She greets Mac by name and welcomes him to Codex.
Matty figures that Burke is working for Codex now, and tells him that either she'll tell Congress about his kill squad or his boss that his hit squad failed. Burke finally asks Matty what she wants for her silence, and Matty wants him to help her find Gwen. Burke takes Matty and Russ back to the war room, and they find the agent and the soldier tied up. Wilt is there as well, and says he that he knocked out his esco4rt, Carter. Disgusted, Burke leaves with his men.
Once they're alone, Matty tells Riley to look for information on Gwen. She figures that if they find Gwen, the head of Codex codenamed Titan, then they'll find Mac and the others. G2wen is an astrophysicist and former DXS agent, and one of the architects of File 47. Russ says that it's time for Matty to tell them what File 47 is.
Mac works out from Hayes' last name that she's his aunt on his mother's side, and James tells Mac that he thought Gwen was dead. Gwen tells Mac that she used to be an idealist like him, and admits that she set up Mac to get James back in Mac's life. When Mason wonders why, Gwen says that humanity is dying as a race, no longer intellectually curious. James tells her to stop, but she continues, asking him if he told Mac about File 47. He admits that he didn't because Burke and his people killed off those who know, and Gwen says that it started as a thought experiment.
James says that it was insane, and even though a Codex soldier puts a gun to his head, he refuses to explain. Gwen says James is an example of humanity like she's talking about, James tells Mac that 47 is a plan to set off a series of natural disasters that will destroy modern society. Gwen insists that it's a reset switch that will cut society's imminent collapse. She shows Mac the graphs and asks if he3 thinks it will work.
Mason is unimpressed, and Gwen says that she wants to talk to Mac privately. The soldiers lead James and Mason off
Riley tracks Gwen's alias and finds a lot of business transactions, but no location. Russ tells her to keep looking.
Gwen shows Mac a telescope pointed at the star Icarus. Mac knows the myth, and Gwen says that they can end society. Mac says that their objective is to help mankind, and Gwen tells him that File 47 was Mac's mother's idea.
Riley finds a shell corp with a deed for a building in a private island near Mexico. Russ and Desi head their by jet.
Mason moans in pain and James tells Scarlett to have some compassion. The two men attack her, and Mason grabs one of Scarlett's guns. She runs out before Mason can shoot her, and Mason and James head back to the main room.
Mac doesn't believe that his mother wanted people to die. Gwen insists that she doesn't want people to die, either, and Mac's mother knew what had to be done. That's why the CIA hunted them down, because the government saw 47 as a blueprint for the apocalypse. Gwen barely survived their accidents, but Codex gave her a new life to save the world.
Mason and James take out a soldier in the garage, and the two men grab cans of gasoline and hook them up to a hummer's ignition. James takes the ignition fob, and then shoves Mason out of the way as another guard comes in. The soldier shoots James before Mason kills him, and James tells Mason that he did it for Mac. Mason goes to get Mac in return for James taking a bullet for him.
Gwen tells Mac that if they do nothing, everyone dies. She figures that they have to kill millions to save the rest, and insists that they have to play God now. Gwen tells Mac to let the hurricane begin, and alarms go off. Gwen tells Mac that he's either with them or against them, and it's time for him to come home. She walks out with one guard, and leaves the other one with Mac as he looks at the telescope. Mac removes a mirror and uses it to blind the guard, then knock him out and run out.
In the hallway, a soldier confronts Mac. Mason guns him down, takes his earbud, and provides cover fire as more soldiers open fire. He takes Mac to the garage and James tells Mac that his mother never wanted but was just doing her job. James reveals that the ignition fob got hit when he did, and figures that he has to stay behind to slow the soldiers down. He tells Mac that he'll set off the explosion manually, and tells Mac that he's the invaluable asset who can stop Codex.
The soldiers start cutting through the garage door with an acetylene torch, and Mac and James hug. Mason leads Mac out via another door, and Mac shares one last look with James before leaving. The soldiers break through and James tells them to run and sets off the gasoline.
Mac hears the explosion and turns to look.
Gwen and her remaining soldiers leave, and Gwen tells Scarlett that they're leaving and Scarlett should initiate a sweep.
Mac tells Mason to go on, and the next time they meet it'll be as enemies. They offer condolences for the deaths of their loved ones, and then Mason leaves. Mac leaves another way and runs through the woods just as the Codex house blow up. Desi and Russ arrive and see the explosion, and Mac says that it was Codex covering their tracks. He tells his teammates that James is dead, and Desi hugs Mac.
Later back at Phoenix, Matty tells Mac that she didn't know for sure that it was Gwen. She thought that it all started feeling familiar, and she didn't tell Mac because she wanted to know for sure. Riley wonders what they do now, and Russ says that they find Gwen and Codex, and stop them from doing more harm. He advises Mac to take some time, but Mac says that he's going to stop Codex like James asked him, and leaves.
