  • Michael Conforti : The Transcendentalists came here in the middle of the 19th century and established the Berkshires as a retreat center. I think all the cultural organizations that have grown up in the 20th century have looked at this as a place of conversation. The Clark certainly is one of those institutions. And we both give people a very special environment for the appreciation of the extraordinary collection, and we're also a site for conferences and symposia, graduate study, undergraduate study in the arts. And all of that is going to be enhanced by the reality of this campus. This campus is about the intellectual and contemplative, as is also about expanded program. I love the notion of this being 'Berkshire Bilbao' which is kinda anti-Bilbao, but still a place where people want to come to have a different kind of experience with works of art, and the ideas embedded in works of art.

  • Michael Conforti : When you got out to the terrace- and the weather is not hailing, actually a nice summer day- you feel as though you are in a perfect place. A relaxed place, a place that is meant to be there, in the form of which it is looking out to the great views that exist, you want to linger. And you don't know quite why, but you do. And I think architecture can do that, and this building does that. Provides a place to linger, and you don't exactly know why.
