Netflix might be known for pumping out a bewildering volume of "content," but the streaming service isn't just breathing new life into forgotten thrillers or showcasing terrible Spanish slashers. Often, amid the deluge of media, Netflix will serve up something decent, and "Society of the Snow" is the perfect example.
Spain's official 2024 Oscars submission for Best International Feature, "Society of the Snow" is the latest movie from "The Impossible" and "The Orphanage" director J.A. Bayona. Thus far, it seems to be the filmmaker's best effort, receiving critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Non-English Language Film at this year's Golden Globes. Now, as of January 4, 2024, it's available to stream on Netflix ... though if you haven't yet watched, you might want to prime yourself for the harrowing story told within.

The story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, the plane that crashed over the Andes mountains in 1972, mainly carrying a young team of Uruguayan rugby players expecting to play a match in Chile, has been told several times. Perhaps most famously in 1993’s “Alive” and the stellar documentaries “I Am Alive: Surviving the Andes Plane Crash” and “Stranded: I’ve Come From a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains,” to name just a few.

In 1972, a Uruguayan rugby team flying to a match in Chile crashed in the Andes, and spent over two grueling months surrounded by snow and their dying comrades. It's no exaggeration to say that Gonzalo Arijon's Stranded: I Have Come From A Plane That Crashed On The Mountains is the definitive version. Arijon structures his film as a fairly typical "look back" documentary, with talking head interviews, archival footage, and surprisingly well-done re-enactments. Arijon doesn't use the re-enactments exploitatively, to create a sense of creeping dread or revulsion; he uses them to ground the viewer in the desolation. By the end of the film, the audience knows the layout of that plane wreckage and the ground around it as...
