He found a great deal for the top of the line coffee maker on EBay and wants to give it to Paul because the one the therapist offers is awful, according to him. Dr. Weston is taken aback by the gift. He did not ask for it, much less expects a gift of this nature from one of his patients. He just cannot accept it, and that is final. Alex tries to be convincing, to no avail. As a compromise, Paul tells him he can leave the machine, but he must take it with him at the end of his therapy.
The pilot tells Dr. Weston he has walked out on Micaela, his wife. According to Alex, she did not even bat an eyelash when he informed her. Micaela is an intelligent woman, who evidently saw it coming for quite some time, so in a way, she has no problems accepting her husband's decision. Asked about how will his sons take it, Alex is convinced they will be all right. The eldest is a boy that is self sufficient. He loves to play chess on the computer; in addition the boy is a loner, preferring to be by himself rather than mingling with other school mates.
Alex talks about his father in the session, after his confession of abandoning his own home. It appears his father was a man that cheated on his wife shamelessly, but on the other hand, he never left home, like Alex is doing now. This man shows symptoms of a bigger struggle than he lets out. He has gone to live, temporarily, with the gay friend and his partner, even going with them to a club that caters to homosexuals.
The next thing Alex touches is on his chance encounter with Laura, the previous day. He wants to get advice from Weston as to how to proceed with this situation. Paul tells him point blank he cannot give him any, since he never discusses his relationship with other patients, something that does not sit well with Alex.
