Diana Rigg's last role
brueggemanntami12 April 2021
I'm trying to keep an open mind and not do any comparisons. I own every book James Herriot has ever written. I loved the original tv series as well. However I am quite disappointed in Tristan. He was my favorite character. In this series he is a bit of a jerk so far. It's only the second episode, so that may very well change. I hope so. They certainly did capture the beauty of the countryside. I am greatly enjoying the visuals and depiction of the people in the area.

I also cannot help but shed a few tears over the wonderful Diana Rigg. She died shortly after this was filmed. Heartbreaking. Such a beautiful and talented woman. I first saw her in The Avengers and have been a huge fan ever since. She is missed.

An episode that has become all the more poignant in the wake of poor Diana Rigg's passing.

Dont trifle with Tricki-Woo
xmasdaybaby196611 September 2020
Another good episode but possibly not as cute as the first but will go down well with those that don't remember the original series. Under normal circumstances either Callum Woodhouse playing the playful Tristan or Derek playing Tricki-Woo would have been expected to steal the show but, with hindsight, it will be known as the last TV appearance by Diana Rigg before her passing. A strong cast again with lots of familiar faces supporting fledgling TV actor Nicholas Ralph in the lead role. Beautiful scenery, a good storyline and a few japes along the way. Will it continue to be sugar-coated TV or will it get down to the real nitty gritty of animals dying?

Dame Diana Rigg

Warning: Spoilers
I must admit that I never saw the original of All Creatures Great and Small, that is the one with a Doctor Who as Tristan Farnon. But I was utterly delighted by this reboot and with the series opener which was broadcast when the world had shut down.

Nicholas Ralph is pretty much perfect for the role of James Herriott (real name James Alfred Wight) although I would have been incredibly impressed if Danny Dyer had been cast instead. Now that would have been something to have a geezer as Herriott. I would have been impressed if say Michael Caine played Siegfried Farnon. That would have been fascinating.

As for brother Farnon, I really think having the guy who played Stephen Hawkins would have been ideal.

The series is picked up
VetteRanger10 January 2023
After the success of the pilot, the series got a new and animated opening sequence which accurately depicts James Herriot's travels around the Yorkshire countryside.

In this episode, we meet the rather rascally Tristan, Siegfried's unreliable younger brother, coming home for a break in veterinary school. I shouldn't write that Tristan is unreliable. He's very reliable at wasting time and wasting money and fudging the truth. And very amusingly, too.

There is more interaction between James and Helen, and we do know how that eventually works out. :-)

It's an enjoyable episode where we also meet Mrs. Pumphrey and Tricky Woo.

Tristan Shows Up
Hitchcoc14 January 2024
The wayward brother, Tristan, arrives, sleeping in the mail car on the train and not paying a fare. James picks him up and they are immediately at odds. Tristan is an opportunist and doesn't like to work. He convinces his brother that he has now passed Veterinary school and is ready to go to work. James worries that this will be the death knell for his new job. James makes a major mistake involving a cow which can't get off the ground. Tristan tries to take advantage of every situation but doesn't count on Mrs. Hall finding out the truth. Once again, this is a gentle show with beautiful scenery and good characters. We also see the entrance of a love interest moving into James's life.

Warning: Spoilers
The bumbling idiot nonsense continues.. Harriet is awkward, unsure and lacks confidence in everything. It's not funny, it's annoying. Would of been way better if they made him smart and knowledgeable. Small town vets may not be the top of the class but he's still gotta know stuff and get respect from the locals. Specially back in that day. Every job he does he doesn't know anything and it all goes wrong. There's better ways to write a character that thinks he's right based on his school knowledge rather then in the field experience...And how can the other small town vet afford 3 cars? There's no way.. Not back in the 30s. Probably couldn't even today.
