Acclaimed filmmaker R.J. Cutler wasn’t always planning to make a movie about Martha Stewart. Then, she came to dinner.
“She basically crashed the dinner, and we sat and talked all night long about her life story,” Cutler tells Gold Derby. During their initial conversation, Cutler says he was surprised that Stewart grew up in “modest means” in suburban New Jersey, raised by first-generation American parents.
“Her background was counter-intuitive to what I might have thought it would be,” Cutler says, noting that his initial expectation was that Stewart came from a privileged upbringing. What the filmmaker realized, he says, is that Stewart herself stood as an avatar for American womanhood in the latter part of the 20th century and into the 21st century.

What’s the deal with the film Academy’s documentary branch? This season’s shortlist for the best documentary feature Oscar, released Dec. 17, was missing one of the year’s most acclaimed crowd-pleasers, Warner Bros.’ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story — which is at 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, won the top Critics Choice documentary award and is nominated for the Producers Guild’s top doc award — and also impressive documentaries about Martha Stewart (Martha), Celine Dion (I Am: Celine Dion), James Carville (Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid) and John Williams (Music by John Williams), among others.
This isn’t to say that the 15 docs that were shortlisted are lacking — to the contrary, most are excellent. But it does reconfirm the doc branch’s weird aversion, over roughly the past decade, to populist titles.
During that period, the branch declined to shortlist Good Night Oppy, a charmer about a Wall-e-like Mars...

Netflix's documentary, Martha, is an in-depth exploration of Martha Stewart, taking viewers through her humble upbringing and the rise and fall of her self-made empire. It's director R.J. Cutler, known for the films Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry and If I Stay, showcases the interesting life of a cultural icon. Her brilliance in business, passion for education, and visionary home-keeping practices has cemented her as the first influencer capable of transcending generations.
However, after seeing the film for herself, Stewart admitted in an interview with the New York Times that its final cut failed to meet her expectations. Although she loves the first half, which details fresh insights into her young life and developing ambition, the second hour disappoints. She gave Cutler full access to her personal life. Yet, his editing omits juicy anecdotes, strays from Stewart's fascinating mind and work to focus on her 2004 trial and prison sentence,...

Martha Stewart had more than a few gripes about R.J. Cutler’s Netflix documentary “Martha.”
The iconic businesswoman told the New York Times that she “hates” how the film ended with her “looking like a lonely old lady.” And don’t even get Stewart started on the “lousy classical score,” especially when her pal Snoop Dogg could have easily been part of the feature instead.
“I said to [director] R.J., ‘An essential part of the film is that you play rap music,’” Stewart said. “Dr. Dre will probably score it, or [Snoop Dogg] or Fredwreck. I said, ‘I want that music.’ And then he gets some lousy classical score in there, which has nothing to do with me.”
While Stewart loved “the first half of the documentary,” the second half fell short. The latter portion of the film includes her jail stint and career resurgence. As Kate Erbland’s IndieWire review, “Martha...

Martha Stewart has seen her new Netflix documentary, “Martha,” and she’s not entirely a fan of the finished product. Directed by R.J. Cutler, whose recent biographical docs include “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” and “Elton John: Never Too Late,” the Stewart documentary features intimate interviews with her as she opens up her personal archives to share never-before-seen photos, letters and diary entries from her career.
In an interview with The New York Times, Stewart gave “Martha” a somewhat scalding review and said “R.J. had total access” to her archive but “really used very little. It was just shocking.” She also revealed she tried to get some of the last scenes that Cutler included in the film thrown out.

It’s a good thing.
On Thursday, Netflix debuted the amusing first trailer for “Martha,” the streaming service’s upcoming documentary about Martha Stewart from filmmaker R.J. Cutler.
The project first debuted at this year’s Telluride Film Festival where Stewart and Cutler participated in a kindly but barbed panel after the screening. Needless to say, it wasn’t all that shocking to read that Stewart had some issues with the film – particularly its coverage of her infamous arrest and conviction. In 2004, Stewart was sent to jail for five months after being convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and making false statements to federal investigators during an investigation of a stock trade.
Stewart’s downfall is but one part of “Martha.” Cutler’s film details the mogul’s entire life, from her upbringing and early successes to her post-prison rehabilitation and comeback. All told, the feature is an engaging and...

Martha Stewart’s recipe for success is outlined in the first trailer for Martha, the forthcoming Netflix documentary premiering on Oct. 30. Two key ingredients are the mottos she has followed for years: “Learn something new every day and when you’re through changing, you’re through.” Mix these in with resilience and defiance in male-dominated spaces, as well as a detachment from assigning more value to a marriage than a career, and you get Martha.

Martha Stewart made history as America’s first self-made female billionaire. And then she went to prison. It’s about time that the iconic lifestyle mogul has landed her own documentary. Now, with famed filmmaker R.J. Cutler at the helm, Stewart’s life and legacy is being brought to the screen.
Academy Award-nominated and Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning director Cutler is more than familiar with capturing elusive titans: He previously directed the definitive Anna Wintour and Vogue documentary “The September Issue.”
Netflix documentary “Martha” marks the first time that Stewart has fully revisited her past on-camera. There’s a moment in “Elton John: Never Too Late,” a robustly satisfying and emotional documentary about the life and career of Elton John, that captures him, in a most revealing way, in his ’70s heyday.
It’s a clip from a television interview, in which Elton is explaining how he writes a song. The clip must be from 1971, and Elton, still looking like a puppy child, with rectangle-framed glasses and plenty of shaggy hair, sits at an upright piano and brings out a sheaf of lyrics — pages all written in longhand by his collaborator, Bernie Taupin. Elton wants to show us his method, so he talks about a song he just wrote, called “Tiny Dancer,” and finds the lyrics to it. He explains how he scanned through them and realized, when he saw the word “ballerina,” that it would have to be a slow-tempo song. He demonstrates how he kind of improvised the chords.

The 2024 Telluride Film Festival was a success on many fronts, delivering packed screenings (and commensurate turnaways) at the big titles booked in the popular venues, with smaller turnouts for docs and classic titles in the less-frequented theaters. Below, IndieWire lays out the festival hits, commercial breakouts, Oscar contenders, and distribution seekers.
Festival Holdovers
The Telluride movies that played best for audiences were already anointed with credibility from prior festival reviews and/or prizes. That includes Cannes prize-winners “Emilia Pérez”, “Anora”, “All We Imagine as Light”, and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, the banned Iranian film submitted for Oscar consideration by Germany. All will be strong Oscar contenders, assuming that “All We Imagine as Light” is submitted by India or France for Best International Film, which is not a foregone conclusion. From Sundance was secret screening “A Real Pain” (Searchlight), starring Kieran Culkin and writer/director Jesse Eisenberg, which played...

As always, the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, waits until the day before the Friday festival launch to release its official selection.
Per usual, many of the slate’s titles have already leaked via publicists and attendees, and few of the most prominent first showings — from Edward Berger’s pope drama “Conclave” (Focus) and Jason Reitman’s recreation of the 1975 launch of SNL, “Saturday Night” (Sony) to RaMell’s Ross’s Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” (Amazon/MGM) — are news at this point. Still, there’s plenty new to dive into.

When you see a documentary about a game-changing pop star, you assume you’re going to get the story of the music, and also a good look at the life, and that there’ll be enough (on both counts) to go around. I was eager to see “Let the Canary Sing,” a documentary portrait of Cyndi Lauper, because it’s directed by Alison Ellwood, who made “The Go-Go’s” a few years back, and that movie had everything: the drama, the trauma, the saga of a total pop-music reset, as we watched the Go-Go’s bust down doors that had been too tightly shut for too long. Cyndi Lauper was no less revolutionary a figure, arriving in the early ’80s, along with Madonna, to announce that we were in the midst of a seismic new definition of what it meant to be a female pop star. The definition was: a star...

“Murf the Surf,” a four-part docuseries, based on the infamous jewel thief Jack Roland Murphy, will premiere February 5, 2023 on MGM+. It’s written and directed by two-time Emmy winner R.J. Cutler and executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard.
At a recent screening for the documentary held at The Aster in Los Angeles, Cutler spoke with Deadline’s Matt Carey about the project. “I got a call asking if I had seen an article written in the New York Times,” the director explained. “It was tied to the renovation that was going on to the Museum of Natural History in New York. It told the story of this jewel heist that had taken place in the 1960s, in the wake of the Kennedy assassination. These surfer-dude jewel thieves had captured the public imagination and became nightly news fodder. Americans gathered around the TV to see what was going on with the case.
