“We made a movie about the worst movie and it might be our best movie,” Tweeted Seth Rogan earlier this week. He was referring to The Disaster Artist, a James Franco-Directed retelling of how one of the best-worst-movies ever came to be and the pair’s latest project. Franco’s film chronicles the creation of Tommy Wiseau’s bizarre passion project The Room, a now-infamous cult-favourite that has been celebrated in cult circles since its 2003 release. Never heard of it? You’re missing out – but in the meantime, here’s a whistle-stop guide.
Following years of failed auditions, mysterious struggling actor Tommy Wiseau pens a script and enlists the help of his friend and fellow budding thesp Greg Sestero alongside a cast, crew and seemingly never-ending back account to bring his dream to life and show Hollywood what they’re missing. The end result was The Room – a truly...

It's all fun and games until someone is left a whimpering mess. Five years ago, The American Scream debuted at Fantastic Fest. Under the direction of Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie), it lovingly documented the growing phenomena of handcrafted haunted houses. As I wrote in my review: "The reaction of the community to the haunted houses, professional-looking and handmade and customized and, yes, more often goofy and silly than actually scary, says more about the homeowners, their families, and their neighborhood than a volume of scholarly sociological observations." My, how times have changed. Directed by Jon Schnitzer, Haunters: The Art of the Scare examines and updates the same phenomena, revolving around three different aspects: a family-run haunted house, similar to the one in The...

It’s a film about the making of arguably the worst movie ever made. That is how the team behind “The Disaster Artist” will hope to sell it to a public that may have yet to experience the wonder of Tommy Wiseau‘s self-financed passion project, “The Room.” Just as “Plan 9 from Outer Space” had Tim Burton‘s “Ed Wood“ and “Troll 2” had Michael Paul Stephenson‘s documentary, “Best Worst Movie,” so now does “The Room” have James Franco‘s “The Disaster Artist.” How it will play to the uninitiated remains a legitimate question, but one thing is for certain: its base are going to be in Valhalla.

In the Netflix original film Girlfriend’s Day, Bob Odenkirk stars as a Ray Wentworth, a washed-up greeting card writer who gets caught up in a web of eccentric intrigue and murder when he enters the race to create the perfect card for a new holiday: Girlfriend’s Day. Directed by documentarian Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie, The American Scream), the film not only creates the entirely new genre of “greeting card comedy noir,” it’s also got the sort of dark, deadpan vibe that appeals to our sensibilities here at The A.V. Club.
And, in a roundabout way, The A.V. Club helped make the film happen. You see, after reading an interview with Bob Odenkirk published on this very site, Stephenson reached out to him to invite him to the L.A. premiere of The American Scream. After the screening, Odenkirk asked Stephenson if he had...

There’s only one reason to write about film and it’s not to praise a filmmaker’s use of shadow but to share the fun of actually watching them.
The idea that people might be watching horror films because they’re fun has never occurred to academics, who usually attribute a film’s popularity to some exaggerated depiction of the real world. Troll 2 has fun at the expense of vegetarians, but anyone who claims that explains the film’s success clearly hasn’t watched it.
A mainstay of the IMDb’s Bottom 100, Troll 2 is the perfect example of a movie that has nothing to offer except dumb, outrageous, schlocky fun. It became a phenomenon when comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade began hosting midnight screenings, which led to a cast and crew reunion as well as a documentary, Best Worst Movie, which chronicled the film’s production and its curious afterlife.

In the wake of the success of Joe Dante’s classic Gremlins in the mid-’80s, movie theaters were flooded with low-budget horror movies about pint-sized creatures wreaking havoc on unsuspecting humans. No one took better advantage of this phenomenon than Charles Band, who would build a dynasty of films about little monsters first with his Empire Pictures and later with Full Moon Features—everything from Ghoulies to Puppet Master, Demonic Toys to Dolls. One of Empire’s first fantasy horror films about little monsters, 1986’s Troll makes its HD debut on Scream Factory’s Blu-ray alongside its notorious sequel, Troll 2, often considered one of the worst movies ever made.
The original Troll, directed by makeup effects legend John Carl Buechler in his feature debut, tells the story of the Potter family, recent transplants to a San Francisco apartment complex who begin to notice strange goings-on in their building,...

Netflix is expanding its roster of original movie titles. The streaming video-on-demand platform has picked up two different indie films, Girlfriend’s Day and Mercy, for both digital and theatrical releases.
The first indie feature Netflix picked up is the comedy Girlfriend’s Day, starring Bob Odenkirk as a struggling greeting card writer who must clear his name after he’s framed for murder. Odenkirk, who just released a sketch series W/ Bob & David on Netflix with David Cross, co-wrote and is producing the indie flick. Girlfriend’s Day is directed by Michael Stephenson (of Best Worst Movie) co-stars Amber Tamblyn. Netflix is planning a limited theatrical release for Girlfriend’s Day alongside its streaming debut.
Additionally, Netflix has picked up the home invasion thriller Mercy from writer-director Chris Sparling (Buried, The Sea of Trees). Starring James Wolk and Caitlin FitzGerald, Mercy tells the story of four estranged brothers who...

Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray release of two Italian films from 1990, the mad scientist creature feature Metamorphosis and the haunted house movie Beyond Darkness, may very well be the first time many horror fans have ever heard of either movie. The major common factor between the two is the presence of actor Gene Lebrock as the lead in both. In fact, these movies represent two of his seven credited acting roles, which means that by picking up Scream Factory’s double feature Blu-ray disc, you will effectively own more than 20% of Gene Lebrock’s filmography. It’s important to set goals.
In 1990’s Metamorphosis, he plays Dr. Peter Houseman, a brilliant scientist trying to perfect a serum that will stop the aging process. In order to test his experiment, Houseman administers the serum to himself and before you can say “Brundlefly,” begins undergoing a… what’s the word?… not “change”… not “transformation”… at any rate,...

This week annoyed by a loudmouth blogger of some repute, who declared anime for paedophiles and insulted more or less the whole of Japanese culture, I decided to watch Netflix original anime Knights of Sidonia. His comments have widely been circulated and condemned by many people and he’s just made himself look a fool, and all this just because Gus Van Sant might be directing a Death Note movie. I recognise that anime is not for everyone but still, by dismissing all of it you are missing out on an awful lot of classic work and influential stuff.
Knights of Sidonia has been billed as a Netflix original but it’s quite hard to imagine that they would have been involved in the production of something like this, it’s pretty far out there even for anime and its more likely that Netflix have done what they did with...

In 1968 a young college drop-out named George A. Romero gathered an unlikely team – from Pittsburgh policeman, iron workers, housewives and a roller rink owner – to create a low budget horror film that would revolutionise the industry, and spawn a new flesh eating monster that endures to this day…that film was Night of The Living Dead.
There has been somewhat of a resurgence of horror documentaries recently, no doubt inspired by the success of Best Worst Movie. One of the more recent efforts is Doc of the Dead, from the makers of the well-received Star Wars docu, The People vs. George Lucas. But whilst Doc of the Dead does find a huge chunk of its running time devoted to George A. Romero and his zombie trilogy, it also takes a look at the entire zombie oeuvre.

From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...
The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.
This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.
Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.

Birdemic, described by director James Nguyen as a romantic thriller, is a story about a young couple falling in love against the backdrop of a batshit insane tale of a town under siege by homicidal eagles! Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (in fact The Birds actress Tippi Hedren makes a cameo in the film in stock footage), the film also tackles topical issues such as global warming and world peace, all wrapped up in a film so inept that you’ll leave the film with the hugest grin on your face. We’ve all heard the phrase “so bad it’s good”, well Birdemic is the epitomy of that phrase!
Where to begin reviewing a film like Birdemic? It’s script? Garbage. It’s actors? Terrible, however the blonde female lead (Whitney Moore) is nice to look...

No, the title isn’t a typo or an oxymoron. As much as I love a great, well-made movie, there’s a darker part of me that almost loves a bad movie more — but not just any bad movie. It has to be so bad, it’s enjoyable to sit through and mock, a la the classic ’90s television show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3K for short). In other words, it has to be so bad, it’s good.
Maybe it’s the pure, perverted thrill of schadenfreude (thanks Germany for creating that word!), or maybe it’s the strange high you get after seeing a car crash — that “Thank-God-it-wasn’t-me” feeling – and however you try to explain it, there’s a good reason these movies are on this list. Here then, are 6 of the Best Worst Movies. I picked one from each decade, starting from the ’50s on up…...

Zero Charisma

Written by Andrew Matthews
2013, USA
This micro-budget, homespun geeksploitation comedy about a Metal-loving game master named Scott Weidemeyer, plunges so deep into the heart of nerd culture, it might just be the best Geek film in years. Zero Charisma simultaneously, ridicules and celebrates Dungeons & Dragons-style role playing through the eyes of a neurotic Game Master who lives in his grandmother’s house, works a lousy job at a donut shop, and spends all his free time as the supreme Game Master guiding his role-players through a journey of fantasy and adventure in a game he’s spent three years working on. It is no slur on the good name of funnyman Jeff Garlin (well, not too much of one, anyway) to suggest he isn’t the first person one would think of to make a sports movie. So, how did he come to both co-write and direct the forthcoming comedy Dealin’ With Idiots about the apparently very competitive world of youth league baseball?
“The inspiration was my son playing baseball,” the Curb Your Enthusiasm star and director of 2006′s I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With recently told EW. “I was like, I have to write a movie about this. So I did.

HBO.s Mr. Show With Bob And David was so amazing, it makes Bob Odenkirk.s few career missteps completely forgettable, and after years of behind-the-scenes work, his recurring role as Saul Goodman on AMC.s Breaking Bad is the series. most oft-utilized respite from tension, and we.re hoping that spinoff comes through. Odenkirk wrote the film.s screenplay, and he.ll play the lead character. This will be the first narrative film directed by Michael Paul Stephenson, who directed the highly enjoyable niche documentaries Best Worst Movie and The American Scream. • Kristen Stewart is lining up more projects for life after Twilight. She has signed onto two indie films that will shoot this summer, political drama Camp X-Ray and the Olivier Assayas-directed film Sils Maria. For Sils Maria, Stewart joins Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) and star Juliette Binoche (Chocolat) in the film about...

With Cannes now in full swing, the latest edition of Indiewire's curation of Hulu's Documentaries page indulges in some long-distance cinephilia. If you didn't make it out on the Croisette this year, let these selections - about film and filmmaking - remind you of your love for the cinema. Watch them now for free! A good place to start is by exploring the devotion certain films engender. Tariq Jalil's "A Galaxy Far Far Away" focuses on the anticipation for "The Phantom Menace" among hardcore "Star Wars" fans, while Scott Colthorp's "Trek Nation" shows the "Star Trek" franchise's lasting impact. The love of film crosses all genres and tastes - and even for a film deemed the best of the worst, as shown in Michael Stephenson's enjoyable "Best Worst Movie," detailing the making of the much-maligned "Troll 2" and its later success as a cult film. Movies about geeks have never been particularly flattering. Even in films like Revenge of the Nerds where the nerds win the day, there is plenty of dramatic license taken to make them badass so they can win the girl. But stories that cut to the heart of geekdom and reveal what true nerdery is all about? Those are extremely rare. It's even rarer when you find yourself pulling for the geek at the heart of those stories, despite everything else.
Luckily this year at SXSW we stumbled across Zero Charisma, a film about a gamemaster struggling to keep his RPG campaign alive after losing one of the main players. But problems arise when he has to battle with the replacement for popularity, and his world begins to unravel. The entire movie hinges on the fantastic performance of Sam Eidson as Scott Weidemeyer, and while he might seem a bit over the top,...

Anyone who's ever attended SXSW immediately appreciates the sense of fun in the air. In that spirit, Indiewire's latest curation of Hulu's Documentaries page includes a series of lighter, and often funny, docs that can help you approximate the Austin experience, even from afar. Watch these films now for free! A great place to start is with a SXSW alum, Michael Stephenson's "Best Worst Movie," still one of the most enjoyable documentaries ever made about bad films and fan culture. Stephenson, the child star of the so-bad-it's-amazing "Troll 2," revisits his fellow castmates and filmmakers to find out the impact of being involved with one of the worst movies ever made. Of course, SXSW's Interactive conference has proven to rival music and film as the event's most popular gathering, bringing together emerging technology and innovative gaming. The roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons has been around since 1974, offering players a chance to create characters and adventure within a rich fantasy world of quests, wars, mysteries and more. For decades, this corner of nerd culture has been maligned and misunderstood, deemed a place where rejects pretend to be wizards. But a new movie set to make its debut at SXSW next week could turn the tables on the perception of this tabletop game. Editor Andrew Matthews and cinematographer Katie Graham share a soft spot for misunderstood subcultures. The two previously collaborated on the niche-exploring documentaries Best Worst Movie, which delved into the popularity of the so bad it's good horror movie Troll 2, and American Scream, which investigated the growing trend of home haunts. (Read my rave review of the latter here.) But Matthews and Graham are traveling outside their comfort zone with their first narrative feature Zero Charisma.

Having spent over a decade together, Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews have been romantically and creatively involved since high school. Their latest work is the entertaining indie comedy, "Zero Charisma." The pair have collaborated previously with director Michael Paul Stephenson as Dp (Graham) and editor (Matthews) on two of his docs, "Best Worst Movie," and "The American Scream." What it's about: An obsessive fantasy nerd gradually becomes unhinged when a charismatic hipster joins his role-playing game. What you should know: "We want people to know that this film is not exclusively for gamers. There are a lot of movies out there for gamers by gamers that can be fun, but this film is an indie comedy/drama first and foremost." On the challenges: "Despite many good examples, it can still be hard to convince people that a untraditional main character will resonate with audiences. Just because someone is nether heroic...

Michael Paul Stephenson is on a roll. Once a trivia answer amongst cult film buffs thanks to his childhood acting role in Troll 2 - considered by many to be the worst movie ever made - Stephenson turned that notoriety into an asset when he made his directorial debut in 2009 with Best Worst Movie, a documentary about Troll 2's enduring cult. And then last year he proved it was no fluke, returning to screens as director of acclaimed documentary The American Scream. One of the more intriguing films listed in this year’s just-announced South By Southwest Film Festival lineup is Zero Charisma. Why? Well, partly because it’s an indie-comedy about role-playing games (and it’s not every day you get to see one of those). And partly because it’s directed by Andrew Matthews and Katie Graham, who worked as, respectively, the director of photography and the editor on the excellent 2009 Troll 2 documentary Best Worst Movie. (Zero Charisma is also exec produced by Best Worst director and producer, Michael and Lindsay Stephenson.)

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

Michael Stephenson has only directed two feature films, but he's already proven to have a remarkable knack for taking seemingly mundane stories and finding the utterly fascinating and surprisingly heartfelt magic within. With Best Worst Movie he took on the life and legacy of Troll 2, a movie people love to hate, and turned it into a smart, emotional portrait of how one movie, no matter how bad it is, can mean so many things to so many different people. With The American Scream he tells the untold story of three small families in a sleepy Massachusetts town who make home made haunted houses every Halloween. The American Scream had its world premiere earlier this year at Fantastic Fest (where we spoke with Stephenson about the film) before heading to Chiller TV, but don't...
