A touching father-daughter anime
Flalfs30 March 2020
The art design is out of this world. The depictions of the other creatures, the fantasy world, the coloring... This anime nails the theme and aesthetic ans tops it off with an interesting story and a cute kid. This anime sets a tone of a lighthearted travel with deeper undertones of time limitations and suspense as to her identity as a human and even emotional sections. This anime does it all- now go watch it!

So. Very. Cute!

Warning: Spoilers
So. Very. Cute! My favorite kind of storyline, a young child and its strange guardian and their adventure together. Many adorable animals especially the fluffy bunnies with horns, brilliant! This is going to be a sad one though, hopefully not too sad. Looking forward to viewing the rest of it!

Simple but not, a beautifully crafted anime.

My personal favorite anime of the season. Something about this just makes me feel some type of way when I watch every week. The colors are stunningly beautiful, the voice acting is perfect, and the cutest anime child of all time must go to Somali. Not everyone's speed I suppose, but it's absolutely mine.

Lovely fantasy

Not mind blowing, but still a nicely done anime, too naive in my opinion and not enough action.

Somali and the Forest Spirit
Tweekums4 April 2020
This anime series opens with a Golem, whose duty is to protect the forest, discovers a human girl, named Somali. He then sets about getting her to other humans. This won't be easy as humanity is almost extinct in this world and other creatures see them as a delicious treat! As the series progresses they travel though countryside and cities; meeting various characters. Some of these are friendly and travel with them for a while and others present a threat; not always an obvious one.

I really enjoyed this series. The central characters were really good and nicely juxtaposed... a caring but emotionless golem and the innocent and lively young Somali. The more we learn about the characters the more interesting they become. The other characters are good too. The settings are beautifully designed making the world believable even when it is at its most fantastical. There is a sense of danger but it is never too extreme so younger viewers can probably enjoy it too. Overall I'd definitely recommend this charming little series.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Sweet and deeply heartfelt

This anime is slower paced but it tells a lovely story. It also addresses issues such as war genocide, and trafficking, so the the story does have some dark undertones. But despite that it is ultimately hopeful.

The sweetest thing

This is the first anime to manage to make me cry so much in only one season while still making me feel warm inside. A good 7/12 episodes made me tear up, or more (generally more). I absolutely need another season of this lovingly heartwarming story. Anyone that rates this below an 8 is probably heartless or missed the major point of discovering one's heart (harsh, but I'm sure many would agree). This is one of very few shows that honestly deserves an 11 rating, along with a recommendation of it to family and friends.

Absolutely beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
I'm reviewing this anime halfway through the first season, so I don't know where it is going or if the story will end with the season's end, which seems very possible. Even so, at the halfway point, there is nothing I can say about this that is negative. The animation is gorgeous, the voice-acting (I am watching it in Japanese with English subs) is top-notch, and the story is both wonderfully endearing and increasingly ominous. The central premise of the story - the Golem is trying to get Somali back to her own parents/people before he dies in a very short time - is inherently heartbreaking. As their journey continues, they grow closer and closer - or, perhaps more accurately, the depth of the Golem's love for his adopted daughter, who already loves him unconditionally - becomes more and more apparent, especially to him. He continually denies that he has emotions, yet everything he does to protect Somali and keep her happy, as well as the (to him) inexplicable reactions he has to things like her expressions of pain speak to what has happened inside of him. It is a deeply touching story, one guaranteed to create powerful emotions in the watchers. As they journey further into the world, the inherent danger that Somali is in adds a growing and powerful sense of foreboding to the entire enterprise. Great anime that speaks to the theme that love has nothing to do with blood ties and everything to do with the people with whom we form our deepest bonds.

A 2020 anime that gave me emotions
Irishchatter30 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I will say this.....Somali is such a darling little girl of 2020 like seriously lads...she'll melt your heart into pieces that you just cannot control yourself!

Honestly I've seen father-daughter anime shows like "Sweetness & Lightning" or "If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord" , I personally felt both series weren't as good as this one! This had such mixture of emotions because there were times where I felt nearly teary and by god man, the last episode made me near to tears!

Somali and the Golems relationship were just truly real like you can't mess with him if you try to hurt his Somali! I nearly cried when Golem showed his true emotions in the last episodes like omg man, my heart literally was in pieces!

This anime was absolutely colourful, the main characters including the ones they met in their journey were interesting, the sub actors (Ono Daisuke and Minase Inori) were excellent with their performances and the story unfolded beautifully.

I'm giving this a 8 since the story isn't finished but its such a very good anime series that you'll laugh and cry with!

By far the best anime I've ever seen
khallenzein14 July 2023
I absolutely love everything about this anime. It looks gorgeous, the english dub is outstanding, and god damn the writing is perfect!

Occasionally the world has a grim tone, and brings up some heavy stuff, but with a touch of reality, and it never loses it's wholesomeness.

It's not action packed, so one could say the story is slowly advancing, but it's actually not true. It must take a slower pace, because it mainly focuses on emotions and relations between the characters, and that takes time to flush out in a way that makes sense. I feel like every episode adds something important.

The story and the world is mature, and not the boring, gruesomely evil way most anime tends to lean towards, but the emotionally heavy and lovely way that will make you cry your eyes out.

The characters (even the side characters) are interesting and I can't praise the conversations enough. Words and actions carry weight. It was phenomenal just listening these characters interact. And I didn't even start on the character development! Couse that's what this story is about and where it excels.

One of my favourite things is the fact, that it doesn't features a villain. There are indeed a very few not-nice or let's say evil characters, but they are insignificant. And guess what? The show doesn't need it. It's still able to create conflict. Conflict between clans, individuals, and most importantly, the conflict with the natural order (expiring lifetime).

The most important thing for last. Somali is so freaking adorable! Cuteness overdose is a serious danger while watching this.

It deserves 12/10 points from me. Hits all the right spots.

A Wonderful Moving Anime
extraplay-618384 September 2023
People call it a touching father-daughter anime, but to me its much more than this. Its about what makes a family, even when you are not blood related.

I am so bereft that this didn't get additional seasons. The art design is out of this world. The depictions of the other creatures, the fantasy world, the colouring This anime nails the theme and aesthetic and tops it off with an interesting story and a cute kid(normally the kids, especially the girls in anime can be annoying - but not in this case - she was spot on). This anime sets a tone of a light-hearted travel with deeper undertones of time limitations and suspense as to Somali's identity as a human and even emotional sections. This anime does it all- now go watch it!
