THE SILENT SERVICE "The Triton's Christmas" 1958

This is the 53rd episode of the U.S. war series, "The Silent Service". The series was about the exploits of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. Each episode is a stand-alone tale of the actions of a particular submarine. Most of the stories are about actions against the Japanese Navy and merchant fleet in the Pacific. There is also the odd tale from the Korean conflict. The series ran for 78 episodes during 1957 and 1958. The stories were all based on actual events. Some pretty good attention to detail here with the U.S Navy allowing filming on several WW 2 era Gato class subs.

Each episode started and ended with retired Real Admiral Thomas M. Dykers giving a breakdown of the action. Dykers became a writer, producer and technical adviser after leaving the service. He worked on films such as, TORPEDO ALLEY, FLAT TOP, THE FROGMEN, HELL AND HIGH WATER and SUBMARINE COMMAND.

This episode is about the U.S.S. "Triton". It is December 1942 and the "Triton" is heading out on her fifth wartime patrol. The "Triton" and two other submarines are heading to Wake Island. The trio of boats are to supply radio bearings for an upcoming long range bombing raid by B-24's.

The raid on December 23rd is a success, and the Wake Island gets a full load of bombs. The submarines stay on station in case any of the B-24's need to ditch. The next day the "Triton" gets an early X-Mass gift when a Japanese cargo vessel appears. The ship, the "Amakasu Maru Number One" is quickly sent to the bottom. On the way back to base in Australia, the "Triton" sinks another cargo vessel. The officers and crew set up a tree on board and hand out gifts for Christmas.

The "Triton" would be presumed lost with all hands when she failed to return from her next patrol. The "Triton" was the first U.S. Navy submarine to fire torpedoes in anger in WW2. She was stationed off Wake Island on December 8th 1941, when Wake Island was attacked. She attacked a Japanese cruiser on December 10th scoring at least one hit. The "Triton" would sink at least 8 Japanese ships including a destroyer and the submarine, I-64.

The cast includes Eric (Rawhide) Fleming, Benny Baker, Wright King, Ralph Voltrian and Harry Landers.
