Chromeo have announced their new album Adult Contemporary, out on February 16th, 2024. Along with the news, they’ve shared another single called “Personal Effects.”
Now nearly 20 years into their time as a band, Adult Contemporary sees Chromeo’s Dave 1 (Dave Macklovitch) and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) “exploring what it means to be funky in your 30s and 40s.” The album’s 14 tracks — which also include singles “Replacements” and “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” — attempt to navigate mid-life relationships, riding all the ebbs and flows into a new chapter.
“Personal Effects” is funky indeed, built on a disco-inspired bass line and embellished with sleek synths. On it, Chromeo meditate on the immediate lingering aftermath of a breakup: “She knew just what she was doing/ Leaving her personal effects behind/ I know I’ll find them one night and she’ll probably be on my mind,” Dave 1 sings, perhaps alluding...

When “The Secret History of Twin Peaks” was first announced, the book was pitched as “a novel that reveals what has happened to the people of that iconic fictional town since we last saw them 25 years ago and offers a deeper glimpse into the central mystery that was only touched on by the original series.” Finally arriving last month in advance of the long-awaited 2017 revival of the cult TV show, the book offers only a few glancing details of the former while delving deeply into the latter. Author and series co-creator Mark Frost uses the bulk of his narrative to weave the strange history of “Twin Peaks” throughout the larger tapestry of American history and the long legacy of occult conspiracies.
This is not a book for a “Twin Peaks” newbie — and the arcane subject matter makes it unlikely to appeal to anyone who isn’t already a fan. A...

In a career fixated on the machinations of filmmaking presented through both a carnal and political eye, Brian De Palma’s fascinations converged idyllically with Blow Out. In his ode to the conceit of Blow Up — Michelangelo Antonioni’s deeply influential English-language debut, released 15 years prior — as well as the aural intrigue of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation, De Palma constructs a conspiracy thriller as euphorically entertaining as it is devastatingly bleak.
In a fake-out opening — shot by Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown — that combines the voyeurism, nudity, and threat of murder that are De Palma’s calling cards, we see Coed Frenzy, the fifth movie in two years that sound technician Jack Terry (John Travolta) has done for the shlock director employing him. By showing the artifice of the B-movie, this film-in-a-film positions Blow Out as a more mature offering from the filmmaker, explicitly foreshadowed during the split-screen opening...

Detective Provenza is ready to take a big step tonight on Major Crimes (TNT, 9/8c). Or, at least mostly ready.
In the episode “Personal Effects,” Provenza’s lady friend Patrice (guest star Dawnn Lewis) moves in with him, resulting in a “redecorating” of his place. In the exclusive sneak peek above, Provenza hires Rusty to help get rid of the stuff of his that has been designated for charity — the operative words being “designated for.”
Elsewhere in the episode: When the squad comes across a pile of bones, they fall into a web of connections as they find their victim has an unnerving past,...

It's fun trying to piece together the clues from the new "Spectre" teaser trailer, in which Daniel Craig's James Bond confronts more demons from the past in his fourth outing that will impact his future course. Thus, it's a continuation of "Skyfall" and not everything from his childhood has been buried. There's no such thing as a regular mission so far in the Craig era, and 007 continues grappling with trust and betrayal in what looks to be a very baroque-looking crucible. 1. Personal effects recovered from Skyfall reveal a secret past that Bond has he kept hidden because he "couldn't trust anyone," according to Moneypenny (Naomi Harris): In Bond's apartment (a first since "Live and Let Die") he looks at a photograph of a boy beside a man with his arm around him holding a hiking pole. There's a third person but the top of the page has been burnt.

An underlying theme of Warehouse 13 that has been prevalent since almost the beginning is that every character has a connection to another, and, together, they all form a friendship and family dynamic that they may not have necessarily had prior.
"Personal Effects" took this motif and brought it forward to the main plot in both the case of the week and within the entire team.
Pete and Myka’s track down of Jessie eventually led to the root cause of his wind pipe manipulation: his brother Ronnie needed a heart, and Jessie was willing to do whatever it took to make sure his brother had the surgery. Even if that meant Jessie took his own life in the process.
While Jessie is not the perfect allegory to Pete and Myka, he does represent them in a few ways: love, protection and sacrifice. Pete and Myka do love each other,...

We're celebrating twins daily at 2:22 pm while we're in Gemini
Gratuitous Anecdote! I've always loved to draw and in my high school years it's what people knew me for. I won the High School's Departmental Award in Art (Do they still have departmental awards? Hell, do they still have art classes?) in that heady stretch of graduation celebrations where they keep honoring star pupils. One day early in my senior year or maybe it was at the end of my junior year, the art teacher asked one of the students to pose for the class. A guy I didn't know volunteered and I felt totally inspired. Instant crushing helps. He loved my drawing and we became fast friends after the class. The first day I went to his house after school I was stunned to see a whole house full of doppelgangers. He had one of those families...

Tune in alert for CNN.s Piers Morgan tonight, who sat down with Kathy Bates to discuss some Titanic sized news. Rumor Has It that The Doctors recently gave Kathy Bates some news that hit her Blind Side. The famous actress has been down a Revolutionary Road and has recently won the battle against cancer. Having kept the secret from Relative Strangers until now, Bates discussed the Personal Effects of dealing with cancer: "I had been contracted to do a film that fall...and I was very concerned," Bates told Piers Morgan. "I just didn't want it to get around." But don.t worry, it wasn.t a Failure to Launch and Kathy won.t be headed to St. Elsewhere as The Golden Compass...

A round of updates to end the week.
First off, The Caprica Times has a fantastic new interview with Kevin Murphy that covers tons of lingering questions about the show, about Murphy's work in the second half of the season, some of the challenges they faced in production, and the plan they had for Caprica season two.
In the interview, Murphy lays out the main storylines for most of the main characters and throws in a few interesting tidbits about the first season that I don't think we've heard yet on the podcasts or elsewhere (the last minute retcon of Teryl Rothery's character, for instance). The article is a must-read, check it out on The Caprica Times.
He also confirmed that John Pyper-Ferguson will show up on Hellcats this season. Magda Apanowicz will guest star in the next two episodes and Brian Markinson has pretty much taken over Aaron Douglas' role,...

"Pirates of the Caribbean" film series director Gore Verbinski is teaming with "The Grudge" writer Stephen Susco to develop the supernatural crime drama series "The Brink" for the Starz cable network reports Deadline.
Based on J.C. Hutchins’ book "Personal Effects: Dark Art", the series follows an art therapist's investigation into the life of an accused serial killer who claims to have foreseen, but not caused, his victims’ deaths.
The series will also have an interactive element with online components branching off from a show that blends "House," "The X-Files" and other crime procedurals.
The show continues Starz' push into more dramatic programming to sit alongside its hit "Spartacus", next month's new series "Camelot", the continuation of the British hit "Torchwood: Miracle Day" this Summer, and a gritty 60s-era drama set in Miami called "Magic City" likely to debut next year.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore left the actor's infidelity rumor behind them by jetting off for a spiritual getaway together in Israel. On Saturday night, October 9, the "Cheaper by the Dozen" actor wrote on his Twitter page, "Sharing Love & Light while in IsraeI."
"Asking 4 the energy 2 forge bonds with our similarities & find compromise in our differences," Kutcher added. The couple, who wed in September 2005, was spotted leaving from Los Angeles International Airport hours before Kutcher posted the tweet.
Kutcher and Moore's Israel getaway apparently wasn't only meant to work through their alleged marital trouble as a source told People that the "Personal Effects" actor is speaking at a conference in the country. The source additionally insisted that the two "are not in Israel to renew vows."

The war against movie piracy is getting downright explosive. The producers of the Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker" are preparing a massive lawsuit against thousands of individuals who pirated the film online. The case could be filed as soon as Wednesday.
Voltage Pictures, the banner behind the best picture winner, has signed up with the U.S. Copyright Group, the Washington D.C.-based venture that, as first reported in March, has begun a litigation campaign targeting tens of thousands of BitTorrent users.
According to Thomas Dunlap, a lawyer at the firm, the multi-million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit should be filed this week. He declines to say exactly how many individuals will be targeted, but expect the number to be in the tens of thousands, if not more. "Locker" first leaked onto the web more than five months before its U.S. release and was a hot item in P2P...

halfway through the day, we freeze a movie halfway through
Confession time: I still have not seen Personal Effects, Michelle Pfeiffer's second recent straight-to-dvd mishap, the other being I Could Never Be Your Woman (see previous post). In both films the goddess has a relationship with a much younger man.
55 minutes into the movie, Pfeiffer hits on an unresponsive near
silent Ashton Kutcher. What's wrong with him?
As one of the web's most notorious pfans, you'd think I'd be more of a completist. But I am so scared to watch it. I don't know why. It's not like I've never seen her in a disposable movie before. For all I know it's good (I scanned to the middle... having still not overcome my fear). Aside from this picture, I have only a few gaps in my Pfandom. I haven't seen any of her TV work prior to moving permanently...

Given his body of work to date, it's easy to dismiss Ashton Kutcher as a lite comic actor (as opposed to an actor in light comedies), who hit his groove in mindless early 21st-century throwaways a la Dude Where's My Car and What Happens in Vegas. But as he showed earlier this year in the little-seen Personal Effects - and as he demonstrates again in the new Spread - Kutcher is an actor with range. Spread may not amount to much but Kutcher will change perceptions of who he is as an actor for anyone who sees it. Opening with an eye-popping Steadicam shot that establishes Kutcher's character, Nikki, as the rooster all the women want to get with at an upscale Hollywood club, Spread is about Nikki, a fast-talking gigolo with a smooth line of patter and a highly attuned...

Ford will be the guest of honor at Deauville, which kicks off on Sept. 4 in the Normandy seaside town. The fest also plans homages to Garcia, whose film "City Island" from Raymond de Felitta will screen at the fest, and Wright Penn, whose "Private Lives of Pippa Lee" will unspool out of competition.
Deauville also will pay homage to the late director-producer Robert Aldrich and will honor the careers of directors-screenwriters-producers David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker.
Nine films will compete for the event's top prizes, four of which are first features, namely Oren Moverman's "The Messenger," Cary Joji Fukunaga's "Sin Nombre," Daniel Davila's "Harrison, Montgomery" and Sophie Barthes' "Cold Souls" starring Paul Giamatti and Emily Watson.

Apparently three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer has been relegated to playing only “cougars.” The slang term has been used heavily to describe the actress’ latest character, a Parisian courtesan who has an affair with a pretty boy half her age (Rupert Friend). But just prior to appearing in Chéri, which reunites her with the Dangerous Liaisons writer-director team-up of Christopher Hampton and Stephen Frears, Pfeiffer starred in two direct-to-video releases in which she similarly ends up with a much younger guy. In Amy Heckerling’s I Could Never Be Your Woman she falls for Paul Rudd, while in Personal Effects she has an ...

There is a bumper edition of new releases this week on the Blu-ray format, although there isn’t a great deal of discs that we’d consider to be “must have” out of the bunch. It is however a great week again for Trekkies, as the Original Motion Picture Collection is now available featuring all 6 films in the series. Liam Neeson’s action vehicle “Taken” also hits the shelves, as does “Fargo” a Coen Brothers masterpiece. Also notable for release are “Big”, “The Grudge”, the first season of “CSI” and the utterly dreadful “S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale”. Check out our “pick of the week” and links to all of the new releases below.
This week’s pick of the week is a tie. We featured “Fargo” as a pick last week in the UK release list, so we have to stay consistent, but we also feel that “The Good,...

Looks like it's another slow week for DVD releases, but fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) studios are increasing their Blu-ray output to make up for it. Major discs hitting stores today include Taken (The Extended Edition!) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans... not so major discs include direct to DVD flicks The Grudge 3 and Donnie Darko sequel S. Darko. On Blu-ray we have Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy and Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, a couple of James Bond flicks, Fargo, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. See anything worth picking up? Taken [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Underworld: Rise of the Lycans [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) The Grudge 3 [7] Passengers [8] (DVD, Blu-ray [9]) Personal Effects [10] (DVD, Blu-ray [11]) Plague Town [12] (DVD, Blu-ray [13]) Possession (2009) [14] High Hopes [15] Lying [16] Taking Chance [17] Galaxy Quest: Deluxe Edition [18] Wise Blood: Criterion Collection [19] Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy [20] (DVD,...

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Two titles you won't see in the release date section below are the Watchmen Director's Cut and the 300 (The Complete Experience) Blu-ray, but both have just been confirmed with July 28 and July 21 release dates respectively. Now, for today's releases... Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collections I am anxiously awaiting my very own copy of the full original crew Star Trek movie series as I only own Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home on DVD and haven't seen the others in a long, long time. As a matter of fact, I can hardly remember what the other four films are about. Search for Spock is pretty much...

When you make a movie with stars like Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates, based on a novella by an acclaimed writer like Rick Moody, you might figure you were on your way to arthouse success. But David Hollander learned the hard way when he made his directorial debut Personal Effects that getting your movie seen by audiences is never as easy as getting great actors and a promising story. Personal Effects, a story about two people overcoming grief and falling in love in the process, will be premiering for one night only in a theater in New York and Los Angeles apiece. After that it will debut on DVD in May, where the investors figure they'll be able to make back their money. Hollander, who has previously worked on TV shows like The Guardian and The Cleaner, is clearly disappointed about the route his film has gone, but...

Ashton Kutcher stepped out for a sneak peek of Personal Effects in La last night before getting to work on his new movie Five Killers this morning. He kept us updated via his Twitter and also posted a video of himself getting makeup done on his Facebook account. Ashton may be a bit addicted to technology these days, but we can't blame him, especially since we're loving Twitter and all our other geeky tech tools too. View 5 Photos › INFDaily.com...

Coming this June from St. Martin’s Press is a new horror novel that, thanks to additional media elements, will be much more than a simple read. Personal Effects: Dark Art also encompasses viral/alternate-reality elements such as websites, podcasts and voice mails that will keep readers immersed in its world.
The book, written by J.C. Hutchins and Jordan Weisman, tells the story of Martin Grace, a serial killer being investigated by art therapist, Zach Taylor. The story incorporates Zach’s personal writings as he tries to find the truth behind the slayings Martin is accused of. Martin claims to have foreseen his victims’ deaths, but did not cause them; the actual killings were the work of a “Dark Man.” In order to uncover the real story, Zach seeks help from his girlfriend Rachael, a gaming blogger, and his brother Lukas. His search into Martin’s past, however,...

Ashton Kutcher is all set to star in Robert Luketic’s upcoming action comedy “Five Killers” for Lionsgate.
According to Variety, Kutcher will play a former hit man who struggles for survival after he finds out someone from his past has hired a bunch of killers to finish him off.
Lionsgate picked up a first draft by Bob DeRosa, with Ted Griffin on board to rewrite the project.
Luketic last directed “21” and most recently wrapped filming for his upcoming Katherine Heigl vehicle “The Ugly Truth.”
As for Kutcher, he most recently starred opposite Cameron Diaz in “What Happens in Vegas.” The actor has two flicks in post-production: “Personal Effects” and “Spread.”
Final word: Luketic has the ability to make entertaining flicks, and Kutcher can be funny at times. Let’s hope they’ll both do their best on this project.

Ashton Kutcher is set to produce and star in Columbia Pictures’ upcoming comedy “Like Father,” Variety reported earlier today.
The pitch by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Rusk Robinson follows a father and son who are forced to deal with their damaged relationship when they have baby sons at the same time.
Oscar-nominated writer-director Kenneth Lonergan, who helmed the excellent “You Can Count on Me,” will rewrite the draft. He also recently completed “Margaret,” starring Anna Paquin, Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo.
Kutcher most recently starred in Tom Vaughan’s “What Happens in Vegas.” He will next be seen alongside Michelle Pfeiffer in David Hollander’s indie drama “Personal Effects.”
Note: Variety calls the film "Like Father," whereas The Hollywood Reporter claims it's "Father's Day." Now which is it? We'll post an update as soon as we find out.
