Did Beauty kill the Beast? Or was it the other way around? Or maybe they lived happily ever after? Writer-director Caroline Lindy plays with classical expectations in her enjoyable debut feature Your Monster. Actress Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) is just out of surgery when the film starts. We quickly learn she’s survived some unnamed cancer and, in the tough year of treatments, her theater-director boyfriend of five years Jacob (Edmund Donovan) broke up with her. To make matters worse, he also moved forward with producing a Broadway musical that they developed together, one with a lead role he’d promised to Laura.
Her only friend is fellow actress Mazie, played well by Kayla Foster, who lifts up a thinly written supporting character. Mazie’s unreliability leaves Laura alone in her transient mother’s New York City apartment, crying and eating pies. Until, that is, an upstairs neighbor reveals himself.

Disney infringed on a VFX company’s intellectual property when it used copyrighted technology to animate CG characters in Beauty and the Beast, a jury has found.
Siding in favor of Rearden, an Oakland jury on Thursday awarded the firm roughly $600,000 after finding that Disney knew it may be engaging in copyright infringement by utilizing VFX software called Mova Contour, which has been used in array of titles by major studios across Hollywood, but continued to use and benefit from it regardless. Part of the verdict, nearly $350,000, is meant to claw back profits attributed to use of the tech.
The figure represents a fraction of the damages that Disney potentially stood to lose in the case, which threatened profits for Beauty. Rearden looked for more $100 million, arguing that the movie’s box office success was due to VFX work performed by Mova.

To capture the breadth and depth of the musical career of Japanese composer and recording artist Ryuichi Sakamoto seems impossible, but somehow “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus” almost accomplishes this herculean challenge. A document of Sakamoto’s final performance before his death from cancer last March, the film provides no commentary or context for the enormity of his body of work, yet somehow encompasses it all as he performs a curated set list in a Japanese recording studio for an audience of one — himself. Far more than a showcase of his talent and productivity, “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus” lets Sakamoto deliver an elegy, and in the process, an autobiography of his creative journey, as captured through the precision and poetry of director Neo Sora’s camera.
Working from a set list personally selected by Sakamoto from his discography, Sora — Sakamoto’s son — recorded his subject’s performances over the span of a week,...

Virgin River Season 5 is coming to Netflix on Sept. 7. But don’t expect series star Alexandra Breckenridge or the rest of the cast to be talking up the new episodes in interviews or on social media. That’s because actors aren’t allowed to promote their projects while on strike.
Thousands of actors have been striking since July 14 Actors on the picket line in August 2023 in New York City | John Nacion/Getty Images
Roughly 65,000 actors and other performers walked off the job on July 14 after their union, SAG-AFTRA, failed to come to an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. AMPTP represents major film and TV studios and producers, including Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, and NBCUniversal.
Actors want pay increases and a bump in the residuals they receive from streaming movies and TV shows. They’re also advocating for more guidelines around the use of artificial intelligence and better working conditions.

Emmy-winning costume designer Laura Montgomery took home gold last year for the third season of FX/Hulu’s What We Do in the Shadows, and had a field day creating looks for the fourth iteration of the comedy’s kooky, vampiric world. In a season packed with impressive looks, one of Montgomery’s main concerns was deciding which one to unpack for THR. Here, she breaks down the process behind creating an outfit for Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) in the season four premiere, which happens to also be an ensemble worn by her corresponding creepy doll-self.
What We Do in the Shadows

Updated 5.09 a.m. Pt: The jury has been sworn in for the trial of Kevin Spacey, with a judge telling the 14 jurors “do not use your computers for anything to do with this trial.”
The American Beauty star, who is accused of sex offenses against four men, stared intently at the nine men and three women jurors as they made their way to their seats. Two reserve jurors were also selected to sit through the opening of the prosecution.
Mr Justice Wall told the jury panel of 14 that the case is one which has “quite obviously” attracted a lot of media attention but that they “must avoid this coverage where you can.”
He warned them against using computers to search “anything to do with this trial.”
Prior to the jury selection, Wall told prospective jurors: “I am sure the defendant will be gratified to know that many of you will...

Moisturize me! Shout out to all the Doctor Who fans who understood that reference. Elizabeth Banks will go from doing cocaine with bears to slathering on rejuvenation cream for the Austin Peters-directed “vanity thriller” Skincare. The project is from Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment, with Jonathan Schwartz and Logan Lerman producing. While the WGA strike continues to delay progress on film and television projects, Skincare already completed its production.
The film stars Banks, Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), Luis Gerardo Méndez (Charlie’s Angels), and Nathan Fillion, with the plot taking place in Hollywood, California. Further details remain a mystery, though it likely won’t be long before we learn more.
“We are delighted to announce another international production involving such world-class actresses and actors,” said Ilbe CEO Iervolino. “‘Skincare’ is a film with a strong visual impact that, because of the cast and the workers it involves,...

With every step she took on the catwalk, Bethann Hardison broke new ground. She did it while strutting in Chester Weinberg’s A-line skirts across the private showrooms of Manhattan’s garment district, where clients believed her to be “out of line.” She did it while dazzling audience members in Versailles in 1973, where she showed Europeans that girls of color brought personality to the runway and were not just human clothes-hangers. She did it ferociously, defiantly, and as shown in the documentary Invisible Beauty, she did it without ever planning to.
Hardison never set out to become the first Black supermodel. In fact, the scope of her ambitions and how they were perceived by society wasn’t something she ever even thought about. And yet, in an industry that has perpetuated racist practices for as long as it’s existed, she became a screen onto which people projected their fears and hopes.

There’s a changing of the guard in the behind-the-scenes world of Gilead.
The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner Bruce Miller, who has steered Hulu’s Emmy-winning drama since its start, has handed over day-to-day oversight of the Elisabeth Moss series. Longtime writers and exec producers Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang have been named co-showrunners for the sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, taking over the role previously held by Miller.
Miller has been steering development of The Testaments, author Margaret Atwood’s sequel to Handmaid’s Tale, at the same time as he’s been plotting the final season of the flagship series. With too much on his plate, Miller opted to focus on The Testaments, with Tuchman and Chang taking over the everyday decision-making on the flagship series. Miller, sources say, will still be highly involved with the final season and will write two episodes of the season.

Sarah Jessica Parker has made a name for herself as an actor and a style icon. For better or worse, reaching icon status without adhering to the industry’s strict guidelines about women’s bodies is challenging. The Sex and the City actor has spoken with candor about her diet and exercise routine. Interestingly, Parker avoids one type of healthy food.

The now-57-year-old And Just Like That… star puts considerable time and effort into maintaining her preferred figure. She told Good Housekeeping in 2006 that she works with a personal trainer and regularly does yoga to stay fit.
The results of Parker’s regimen are apparent, but the actor stresses how unattainable her lifestyle is for the average person.

Rhys Frake-Waterfield's new horror film "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" takes the toddler-like characters from A.A. Milne's beloved 1926 children's novel, and transforms them into lumbering, human-hating, bloodthirsty serial killers. If you ever wanted to see Christopher Robin's little yellow Pooh bear as Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," then "Blood and Honey" is for you.
The central gag of Frake-Waterfield's film is, of course, the juxtaposition of Milne's childlike innocence with the violent crassness of your average slasher movie. One might ostensibly get a certain lascivious thrill from seeing well-known childhood imagery blended with adult material. A similar approach was used in Danishka Esterhazy's 2019 film "The Banana Splits Movie" which saw the stars of the 1968 children's TV show turned into murderous robots, as well as any number of horror fairy tales.
Because most of the above stories are now in the public domain ("The Banana Splits...

Over the years, many Survivor castaways have had to be pulled from the game for their safety. Some get injured during challenges, while others’ bodies succumb to the elements. Unfortunately for Neal Gottlieb, he had to join the exclusive group of Survivor medical evacuations during season 32, aka Survivor: Kaôh Rōng — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty.

Survivor Season 32 split the show’s 18 castaways into three tribes — Brains, Brawn, and Beauty. And Neal, as an Ice Cream Entrepreneur, fit right in with the Brains tribe on Survivor: Kaôh Rōng — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty.
Neal quickly connected with Aubry Bracco, and the twosome later found themselves in the middle of Liz Markham and Peter Baggenstos vs. Debbie Wanner and Joe del Campo, which helped them survive their first Tribal Council.

After 43 seasons, Survivor has had plenty of champions that fans believe shouldn’t have won the game. Viewers of the CBS reality competition series have strong opinions, so it’s difficult for everyone to agree on whether or not a Sole Survivor is “worthy” of the title. And unfortunately for the Survivor Season 32 winner, their triumph is one of the most controversial decisions in the show’s history.

Photo: ‘Beauty’ Overview In this new Netflix original film, dive into the story of a young woman named Beauty (portrayed by Gracie Marie Bradley) who has a promising musical career laid out in front of her. Of course, her dream career matters plenty, though she understands that there is more to living a happy life than wealth and fame. LGBTQ Attitudes in the ‘80s Set in the 1980s and based on the success story of singer Whitney Houston, ‘Beauty’ covers some interesting grounds regarding the public attitudes toward LGBTQ+ relationships. Even if a queer drama is about struggle, it shouldn’t require great effort to watch. “Beauty,” an ‘80s-set period piece about a young singer’s conflicts with her sexuality, race, and family strife, feels labored and wary before the film hits its second reel. “Beauty” telling the story of a young starlet on the cusp of fame is not a unique one. While it often places its lesbian relationship centrally in the narrative, any commentary on the difficulty of such a relationship, especially involving people of color, adds very little freshness to the proceedings.

Exclusive: Andy Fischel has joined Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s House Eleven10 after spending four years at Netflix on the Original Studio Film team. In the new role, he will oversee production and development for House Eleven10.
“It’s exciting to be able to have someone of Andy’s caliber so early on at House Eleven10,” said Abdul-Mateen. “Andy has great taste, experience developing large scale diverse projects and overall brings a level of expertise that will allow him to come on board and hit the ground running. It felt like a natural fit, and we’re looking forward to getting into the race.”
At Netflix, Fischel shepherded the critically-acclaimed film The Harder They Fall, written and directed by first-time feature director Jeymes Samuel, produced by Shawn Carter and James Lassiter, and starring an ensemble that included Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors and Regina King. He also helped oversee the Chris Hemsworth-led thriller Spiderhead,...

The Lena Waithe-penned film about a young singer on the brink of stardom hiding a relationship with her best friend stumbles with too many wrong notes
Beauty, a coming-of-age music drama written by Lena Waithe and directed by Andrew Dosunmu, purports to tell the story of a fictional young singer in early 1980s New Jersey on the brink of stardom. She is tall, willowy and black, frequently clad in shoulder pads and bright colors, first seen smoking a joint in her bedroom that her older brother warns will damage her voice – a voice which, we’re told, is once in a generation, though we never hear it. Beauty (Gracie Marie Bradley), as she’s oddly called, frequently sings, but the film layers background music or silence over her voice, keeping it at a remove. It’s a central void emblematic of a hollow film which has little to say about anyone or anything,...

It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay: Dosunmu Finds Fame is a Heartbreak Hotel in Familiar Melodrama
Destined to be the oddest entry in Andrew Dosunmu’s filmography is his fourth feature, Beauty, a film initially vaguely described as being about a young Black woman’s overnight rise to fame after signing a recording contract designed to make her a chart crossing icon. The second narrative feature penned by the multifaceted Lena Waithe quickly reveals itself to be a somewhat blatant piece of Whitney Houston fan fiction reorganized into a A Star is Born trajectory, outfitted with all the unmistakable window dressings of a woman whose sexuality was blatantly repressed and whose racial identity was infamously obscured prior to a myriad of issues which would compromise her career and eventually her life.…...

The protagonist of the new Netflix film written by Lena Waithe, Beauty, is an enigma. Her facial expressions are no compass for her feelings. Her eyes stay wide, lips perpetually parted. Tonal variations are scarce too: Grace Marie Bradley, the actress who plays the titular character, delivers her lines in a husky, suggestive whisper. It’s difficult to tell how intentional all this mystery is, which makes the occasional raised eyebrow, playful smirk or tear streaming down the face hard to interpret.
You wonder: Who is Beauty? Is she simply a sheltered girl groomed by domineering parents for stardom? A young adult navigating the bounds of a secret relationship with her girlfriend? A gifted singer exclusively interested in honing her musical talents?
And then: What is Beauty? Is it a portrait of a young woman balancing family, love and career? An allegory about...

The fantasy, power, and impact of the music industry has been well-documented in motion pictures. This very minute, audiences can go to a theater and learn all about the highs and lows of musical icon Elvis Presley. It’s difficult to craft something original from a world littered with as many success stories as horror stories, many of them already told (and told again) on screens both big and small.
And it’s even more difficult to do that when your main character — presented as a generational talent deserving of her own cinematic event — never actually sings a song. Such is the case with screenwriter Lena Waithe’s new Netflix musical drama “Beauty.” Though heavily inspired by the life of Whitney Houston, enough that it may well qualify as something of an unauthorized biopic of the massive musical star,
