Beep
paultapner29 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A baby is born on the ship. A beeping noise starts. Which is seemingly a warning sign that they're running out of oxygen. How to handle that? Meantime they might get the funding after all. At a cost...

After two excellent episodes and one very good one, this is a drop off. It has some very good ideas in it, and some nice character moments. But it doesn't work as well as it could, and it just isn't as funny as the last few. Much as I hate those who watch tv shows and go 'why did that happen? why did they do that? What happened there?' etc etc, Hugh Laurie's character would say 'why the beep didn't they beeping well beeping check what the beeping beep was about in the first beeping place? Beep!'.

There are some very good ideas in the final third though, so it's a shame it doesn't make more of them. But there's some very good emotional stuff, and some stunningly good visuals. Think of this as a character comedy in space, rather than a sitcom, and maybe it will work better for you that way.

Path To Glory ?

This was the first episode of the series that I say was genuinely good as opposed to just tolerable.

An unidentified ship wide beeping noise begins to keep the crew and passengers awake, only increasing the tensions on board. This intensifies when it's suggested that the noise is an alarm that occurs when the ship is leaking Oxygen. The ships activities, even down to speaking, are curtailed to try and prolong the remaining supply.

It's annoying to start with a scientific issue, it is a comedy series after all - but the resolution doesn't make sense. The alarm is - Spoiler - due to the extra oxygen for a child born on board and the need to recalibrate the levels. Shouldn't the alarm have then gone off a few weeks ago, when the three people died? Again, hate to be the one overthinking it, but given that's the resolution they went with I felt I had to bring it up. That said, this was the funniest episode of the run so far, it's the reliable sources again that are the catalyst. Huge Laurie, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura but even the usual annoying aspects (Josh Gad and Zach Woods) are better in this one. Perhaps everyone is finally getting a handle on who the characters are, as the shows running on.

Back next week for the penultimate episode of the run.

Hilarious Episode!

I love this episode. It's hilarious in a particular way that, understandably, not everyone will understand.

This felt like the first classic episode. Really great stuff and very funny and not a waste of anything. Cult status confirmed.

Anyone giving this >4 must have been paid or related to one of the actors.
