Metro Maalai
The metro is a very lonely place, full of people. Deep down it's just an empty place. The same goes to people who lives in the Metro. The male lead is the pure emptiness that dwells in the Metro. The Void. A very empty lonely man. Till the end his name was never revealed. The only thing which were revealed was his loneliness. His emptiness. The Void.
In the other hand, the female lead was another manifestation of loneliness and love. Her name was Nithya. The eternal. She exists forever in his mind.
In the end, It was just a eternal void. There's no end to the void of a lonely man. Everything comes to an end one day except for the eternal void that he travels through. Loneliness was the only friend of him. The memories of his love, just stays as a loop of his mind.
A melancholy orchestra conducted by the lonely Kuala Lumpur.
As a person who loves street photography, this film deeply connected to my inner self of Kuala Lumpur. The aesthetics of every corner. In a metro, even the dodgiest place will look as a treat to the eyes. Haran & Shoban perfectly crafted the aesthetics of the Kuala Lumpur with their man, David throughout every shot of the film. The movie feels very empty like a place of desolation even in the most noisiest place, Kuala Lumpur. But deep down it feels like a very soothing musics were playing throughout the film. Haran & Shoban perfectly brought that feeling into the film. A movie should brings you into the world of it and makes you to think alike it. Metro Maalai did this to me. This is a Malaysian Cinema. This film have resemblance to the Wong Kar Wai's cinema. In one of the scene, there was a Chungking Express poster. The Wong Kar Wai's feeling was a very beautiful feel. I'm really happy that you guys gave a better cinema to this Malaysia. One day, there will be a Malaysia New Wave. Its starting with this year's last Malaysian Tamil Film.
There was a bloom effect throughout this film. I dont know whether there's a reason behind it or not but what I thought was this. Memories and thoughts are very dreamy kinda of place. Kuala Lumpur have a lots of memories and thoughts buried deep down in it. Maybe this story was part of Kuala Lumpur's memories.
Thank you Jagat team and Metromaalai team for giving us this two beautiful Malaysian Indian Films.
