I thought Episode 1, the Endlessly Beating, would be a science documentary about how hearts work generally. It was the story of two people who had heart pumps implanted waiting for heart transplants. There was almost no science and very little technical explanation, why, for example, a heart could not be used because the donor died. In hooking up a transplant heart they made it sound as if all you had to do was connect four pipes. It was all about the waiting, the worry, the endless nervous claims of "I feel optimistic" based on nothing. I was not prepared for such a grim experience. One of the patients, who was dead for 20 minutes on film, handled the ordeal with aplomb. The other was somewhat whiny.

One of the amusing things is the various health care professionals were nearly all obese, however, neither of the two patients were.

When the film starts out the filmmakers have no idea what will happen -- will there be any donor organs, will the patients die? The bravery gives the film extra edge. You too feel no assurance all will necessarily work out OK.
